Rocks Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Has the Torch ever left Jonokuchi before the end of the 1st basho? Are there ever any cross Jonokuchi/Jonidan matches?
shimodahito Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 once, i think. and yes, certainly. occaisionally, a 6-0 jonokuchi will be matched against a 6-0 jonidan (which could involve the TORCH); or an upper ranked jonokuchi will be "brought up" to face a jonidan, similar to juryo-makuuchi matchups. it's rare and would probably not involve the TORCH.
Rocks Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Thanks. Has there ever been a time the rikishi holding the Torch withdrew for some reason? What happens then?
shimodahito Posted January 13, 2017 Author Posted January 13, 2017 good day all, 1st, to answer the question: Nothing happens if a rikishi withdraws. The next TORCH match will happen whenever the TORCH returns to action. This has happened several times in the past. 2nd, back to the basho: on Day 5 ~~~DAY 5: Jonokuchi 23 West Kenshin (2-0) passes the TORCH to Jonokuchi 11 East Fujihisashi (2-0) [no entries involved] 3rd, for today we have a:TORCH MATCH ON HATSU DAY 7!RIKISHIFUJIHISASHI vs NARUTAKIRANKJONOKUCHI 11 EAST vs JONOKUCHI 17 EASTPlayer(s) up for points:Jason's rikishi pick is NARUTAKIShokikogi's rikishi pick is NARUTAKIa loss = 1 point, but a win = 3 points and an opportunity for more points in the next torch matchstandings:78 players with 0 points.
shimodahito Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 good day all, We have an unusual situation in Jonokuchi. Our TORCH MATCH features the last two undefeated rikishi. Both are only 4-0. So with only one 5-0 rikishi remaining, it will be interesting to see if the leader's next two matches will be against a one-loss jonukuchi (which could lead to a big playoff scenario), or an undefeated jonidan (which could move the TORCH up the ranks significantly). Today, three players vie for points in the: TORCH MATCH ON HATSU DAY 10!RIKISHINARUTAKI vs MAETARANKJONOKUCHI 17 EAST vs JONOKUCHI 10 WESTPlayer(s) up for points:Jason's rikishi pick is NARUTAKIShokikogi's rikishi pick is NARUTAKIkuroimori's rikishi pick is MAETAa loss = 1 point, but a win = 3 points and an opportunity for more points in the next torch matchstandings:Jason - 3 points Shokikogi - 3 points 76 players with 0 points. 1

shimodahito Posted January 22, 2017 Author Posted January 22, 2017 (edited) Here’s a rundown of the TORCH journey through Hatsu. In rare form, the TORCH jumped to Jonidan during the basho. It will be interesting to see if it will be in Sandanme for the Haru banzuke. We end with a nice 3-player tie; and none involved a connection to this year’s most popular rikishi pick, Wakaichiro (who finished 3-4).
