Sakura Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Since it's started now. For what it's worth Isegahama beya just went 1-4 in Jonokuchi.
Fukurou Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 3 rikishi did not appear for their matches in Jonidan alone. Makes me wonder if that's a harbinger of drop-outs to come.
inhashi Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 And Kitanofuji will not be around to do his usual commentary. He's recovering at home with recent heart surgery :(

rhyen Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Does anything think that they will just paste a ochiomage toupee on Osunaarashi's (& Aminishiki's) scalp just to preserve some sort of dignity? Edited January 8, 2017 by rhyen
Rocks Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 What a win for Osunaarashi! I thought he was beat for sure. 1
Rocks Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 That should have been a second Matta. Sato was very nervous .

Just got back from out of town since Christmas holiday so I've got some major catching up to do. Rocks Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) WOW! Yoshikaze! Just WOW! Edited January 8, 2017 by Rocks 4
Jakusotsu Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 The most embarrassing to watch today was the Chinese qq stream hastily pasting a picture of a female baseball player in hotpants over the Tenno everytime he appeared on the screen. 1

Dwale Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Osunaarashi and Yoshikaze both had great-looking wins today. I couldn't choose a favorite. Osunaarashi gave a shove after the fact and probably got an ear-full from his oyakata. Not a whole lot to say, as is usual for day one. I was thinking, "Maybe it's Shodai's turn to beat Hakuho..." lol. Someday, but sure as heck not today. Mitakeumi getting a win, though, and good on him for it.
Morty Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Mitakeumi really looked the goods today - Goeido fought hard but was never in it. Shodai was also never in it, totally psyched out by the Great One before it even started. And I get the sense that Kakuryu has taken his sumo to another level and isn't going to lose much this year. Hak may have to cede his position as the number one Yok this year. 1

Sakura Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 Fantastic day of sumo. In my short watching experience, that was the most fun day I've had. Go, Yoshikaze! 1
SumpaX Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 I had this feeling Kakuryu will just throw tochinoshin through the air before the bout started... If he can keep this kind of sumo, i might become a fan.
Benihana Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Just watched juryo. Mon Ami nishiki looked really good, but all that salt made the dohyo slippery, too bad. However, he didn't look like someone who is ready for a soon intai. Is it only me, or did Ura put on some weight? All in all a nice day. Someone should tell Shodai that if he wants to win, he has to fight, not just stand up and wait what happens next. Disappointing. The bout i'm looking forward the most tomorrow, is Harumafuji vs. Mitakeumi. Will Harumafuji try his non-henka again and if yes, will Mitakeumi not only counter it like last basho, but actually win this time? Edited January 8, 2017 by Benihana
Katooshu Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Wow at Osu's utchari! He was in a very precarious position and I thought he was out of it. I don't think that type of power work on the edge is great on the knees though. Edited January 8, 2017 by Katooshu 2

Hmmm, it didn't look like a late shove (dame oshi - or is it dame Osu??) to me, more like he wanted to untangle his arms in order to prevent going down with Chiyoo. 1

Nantonoyama Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 Brilliant moves by both Osunaarashi and Yoshikaze. Yoshikaze's grab was very impressive, but I thought that it was forbidden to grab the opponent's mawashi by the vertical strip (the one that goes between the cheeks)...
dingo Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 2017 might be the year we finally see some fresh blood shaking up Makuuchi all the way to the top. Mitakeumi is not afraid of anyone and Shodai had some goods as well, as long as he brings them (not like today...). Then there's Takakeisho, Ishiura, Nishikigi and Kagayaki putting pressure on the lower half of Makuuchi. This is gonna be a great year of sumo!
