Asojima Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Going into Hatsu 17, it appears we will be down to 3 choices for online live streaming of the matches. Sherming 9 (which replaced Sherming 22 in November) provides the live NHK G video and audio coverage of the makuuchi division and, usually, the last half of the juryo division. It also provides an online chat service which is used by several of our forum members. Coverage normally starts at about 3:30PM JST. For some, the chat is only available for those using the IE or Chrome browsers. UBS is a Mongolian service that streams the NHK G video signal, but dubs in Mongolian commentary on the audio side. Coverage starts at about 4:05 PM, and includes only the makuuchi division. The site requires an active Email address and a password as a login. If you translate the site, the signup is relatively simple. The UBS-Alt site which formerly rebroadcast the UBS signal without the need for a signin appears to have lost its access to the UBS signal in December. qq is a relatively new (for us) Chinese site. It normally broadcasts the NHK G video and audio of the makuuchi division, but its coverage is unpredictible. Sometimes, it airs a digest of several days' matches which overlap into the start of the makuuchi division. Things get a little flaky here. The Sherming site normally runs with a 3 minute delay. UBS normally runs close to real time. qq can be real time or with several minutes delay. The NSK site posts the match results within seconds of the match completion. This can be spoiler for the stream viewing. The streams will occasionally build up a delay within your browser. If a delay build up is noticed, it can usually be eliminated by doing a restart on the link. If there is a major news or political event occurring in Japan, the NHK sumo coverage may get preempted on the Sherming site. If this happens, the normal NHK sumo coverage will still appear on the UBS and, possibly, the qq site. They are your backup. The streams may become choppy or pixelated. Changing your browser or viewing mode may help. Smoother viewing is usually found in full screen mode, and most of us find that Chrome will sometimes provide a cleaner stream. The General Info topic should be used to communicate new developments in the streaming world. Use this topic to convey infomation specific to the coverage availability for this basho. 13
kuroimori Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Thanks as always for keeping track of the current live video coverage options. One remark regarding your quote "Success is 10% inspiration, 90% last minute changes" - this clearly does not apply for GTB - I tried that many times...
Nantonoyama Posted January 4, 2017 Posted January 4, 2017 Thank you for these precious pieces of information. I will try to do some "live coverage" this basho. Is the chat usually used by some forum members?
Asojima Posted January 6, 2017 Author Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) qq is currently showing a digest of matches from the Aki 16 basho. They are now showing Day 1 matches. They will probably show several days (or the whole basho). Edited January 6, 2017 by Asojima

sumodrax Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) Thanks for the information ... and i also wish you all a Happy New Sumo Year Edited January 7, 2017 by sumodrax
Fukurou Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 How does a user either change their username, or change their username in chat, or delete their account on Vaughn?
Asojima Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 Day 1 - Sherming 9 is active at 3:05 PM JST with Juryo.

Kuroyama Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Watching on Sherming, but it's not letting me log in for some reason so I can't chat. Anyone ever have it happen that the "Processing" box pops up and never goes away? Edited January 8, 2017 by Kuroyama

Others get Firefox normally.
Kuroyama Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Thanks. I don't have Chrome installed, so it'll be a bit... Edit: It's no better on Chrome. Let me try IE. Edit 2: Nope, not that either. Edited January 8, 2017 by Kuroyama

Asojima Posted January 8, 2017 Author Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Day 1 - qq went active at about 3:30 JST, but it is currently running with about a 15 minute delay. Edit: Did a restart on qq, and it is now running with only a minor delay. Edit: UBS went active at about 4:03PM. Running near realtime with no delay. Edited January 8, 2017 by Asojima
Kuroyama Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 It was that I used the wrong username. Instead of giving me a login error, it just sits there.
Asojima Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 (edited) Day 2 - qq is active by 3:00PM with the lower juryo matches. Running in slo-motion. - Sherming active at 3:55PM JST Edited January 9, 2017 by Asojima
Asojima Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) Day 3 - qq active at about 01:30PM JST with what appears to be live Day 3 lower division (Ms/Sd) action. The coverage is a retransmission of the live NHK BS channel. I found it active at about 1:30 PM. The BS channel is available only in Japan, and it has for a long time broadcast the lower division divisions. This is the first time I know of that it has been streamed outside Japan. Will check more closely tomorrow to see if it will be available daily and how soon it is activated. More edit: For me, the stream seems to be running at about 2/3 speed. The transmission delay keeps building up. Resetting the link now and then will catch the stream up to near realtime. Edited January 10, 2017 by Asojima
Rocks Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Boy, there are a lot of mattas in the lower divisions eh?
MumboJumbo Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I've noticed that the qq site works on my phone, while the others do not. Something to take note of for those who might find themselves away from a computer but still with access to a smartphone. Probably has something to do with the two using flash player.
Asojima Posted January 10, 2017 Author Posted January 10, 2017 Day 3 - Sherming active at 3:10 PM JST.
sesom Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 NHK also started early at 3:15 JST. Others in the chat and forum mentioned that QQ is running slow, but for me yesterday and today QQ was perfect, better resolution that the NHK stream.

Getting better performance and an improved picture. I still get better video quality on Sherming. On chat, there is a wide variance in video quality among the participants. Location, ISP capabilities, and ?signal routing? make a difference. Edited January 10, 2017 by Asojima
Sakura Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I found qq to run for longer without stuttering for me. What's up with the picture of the lady playing baseball?
