Bench Sumo news

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have received the following message from the esteemed Marushiki, the chair of the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council.

*************************
Venerable Rijicho

At the end of the Basho, the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council has hotly debated the result of our Yokozuna, Flohru.

It is disappointing for the Yokozuna himself, to have a MK losing record this Basho.  We feel we need to offer our commiserations on a difficult Basho, which many of us also had.  It is part of the nature of the game and we all wish we had a crystal ball to tell us how the real guys are going to perform.

His record as yokozuna started with an MK result, but the following 5 records have all been KK.  The majority consensus is we need to offer encouragement and we shall observe how he performs in the next tournament in March.  Should the next Basho end in a MK, then we will meet again and discuss options.

I shall now return to the Australia Day Celebrations we are having at our HQ....

Marushiki (Chair BSYDC)
*************************
As rijicho, I would also like to offer my commiserations to the Yokozuna for January's basho (winning the No Cigar Award does indicate that Flohru was putting up the sort of performance that would normally result in a KK) and my encouragement to the Bench Yokozuna for March. As a reminder to all, we have slightly higher expectations for a Bench Sumo Yokozuna, and a 9-6 record is considered the true benchmark.

Hi all,

Here is the new Bench Sumo banzuke for March 2021. It was put together by Jejima, Flohru and shin-banzuke maker Sakura. Watched over by Kintamayama, Ekigozan, Asashosakari and Kaiomitsuki.

Wow, what a baptism of fire for  Sakura, as this was one of the more tricky ones to put together. I am afraid, there is quite a bit of bad luck going round. Usually this evens itself out over time, so if you have bad luck this time, you *might* have good luck next time.

Anyway, here it is....

**************************

Just a little extra note.

Bench Sumo must have two Ozekis on the banzuke at all times. That is why Flohru is ranked as Yokozuna-Ozeki. It is not a demotion, but filling a need for banzuke purposes.

There's a huge gap between where Chocshoporyu and Roundeye "should" be ranked, but they're adjacent among those who actually moved.  There's a ton of bad luck in the area just above.

Hi all!

Re: Entry
The entry website is open for entries. Go here to do so --> <http://benchsumo.sumogames.de/Menu.aspx>

Don't leave it until the last minute! (You can always change your entry later - just make sure that you get your initial entry in.

Re: Day-to-day gyojis
Please let me know if you can help out this basho. Let me know which days you are available, how many days that you would like, and if you have any preference for divisions.

Re: Milestones
Here are the possible 'milestones' for Bench Sumo players for the March basho 2021.

A big shout-out to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page that made this email possible.

All the good stuff can be found here -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are nine parts.

1. The players at a new career high rank.

2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in March.

3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in  March.

4. The current  top 20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.

5. The current top 20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.

6. The top 20 biggest earners from the January 2021 basho.

7. The top 20 biggest earners of all time.

8. The top 20 kensho winners for the January 2021 basho.  (kensho are sponsorships for bouts)

9. The top 20 biggest kensho winners of all time.

Enjoy!

Hi everyone!

Here is the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2021 after the March 2021 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from May 2020 to March 2021.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after January 2021) - Rank on the March 2021 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 5 bashos - (points change from after March 2021 - basically the points gained for March 2021 minus the points gained in March 2020).

Norizo is back on top. Gaijingai storms into third place.  The biggest jumps in places is shared between Joaoiyama and Chelseayama - which is apt.

Over-and-out-until-May!

Hi everyone,

I have received the following message from the venerable Marushiki, the chair of the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council. They have discussed Yokozuna Flohru and Ozeki Taka.

Jejima

Venerable Rijicho,

The BSYDC have met to discuss the Basho, and the results of our Yokozuna.

We all commiserate with Flohru who seems to have come under the "Yokozuna Curse", and suffered a difficult Basho (like quite a few of us) and come up with a very sad MK.  With this being his 2nd MK in a row at Yokozuna ranking we hope to see that the May Basho will be a better result.

We offer our encouragement to Flohru and hope that the May tournament is a better one for him.

The council consider that if in May he again goes KK, then he is again performing at the standard that brought him into the Yokozuna ranking.  Should MK be the result then we would suggest retiring from Yokozuna and starting again at the lower ranks.

Should Flohru consider restarting and going into the lower ranks sooner, we will understand, but at least see how he feels coming up to the May tournament and either make his decision before the start of the May Basho or hold out and see if he can gain KK.

We also took the chance to look at Ozeki Taka's record and were pleased to see a strong Jun-Yusho.  We look forward to seeing how he does in the upcoming Basho and will discuss how we will progress to promoting him to Yokozuna.

We also offer our encouragement to Taka and look forward to seeing good things coming from the Ozeki.

Marushiki (Chair BSYDC).

Hi all,

Here is the new banzuke for May 2021, put together by Flohru, Sakura and Jejima, under the watchful eye of Kintamayama, Ekigozan, Asashasakari and Kaiomitsuki.

There are some BIG bits of luck in some places, and also BIG bits of bad luck in other places.

It is good to see Norizo reclaiming his Ozeki rank. This will be the *fifth* time that he has been promoted to the top rank! (The next closest is three times). See Takanorappa's excellent site for more details --> <http://takanorappa.com/BenchStats/BenchOzeki.htm>

Enjoy!

Here are the possible milestones for the May basho 2021.

Many thanks to Takanorappa and his Bench Sumo stat page where are the good stuff can be mined -->  <http://www.takanorappa.com/ichimons.htm>

There are nine parts.

1. The players at a new career high rank.
2. The number of active bashos (multiples of 10) - *if* the player turns up in May.
3. Players who have a chance (even if very remote) of going to a new 'multiple of 100' career wins in  May.
4. The current  top 20 leaderboard for the *all-time* total number of wins.
5. The current top 20 leaderboard for the highest win percentage for *active* players.
6. The top 20 biggest earners from the March 2021 basho.
7. The top 20 biggest earners of all time.
8. The top 20 kensho winners for the March 2021 basho.  (kensho are sponsorships for bouts)
9. The top 20 biggest kensho winners of all time.

Enjoy!

Once again there is a new entry at number one - and of course it is the yusho winner, with the massive championship bonus. A sansho basho is pretty good too - enough to propel tainosen into fifth position! (Joaoiyama and Norizo picked up the other two sansho bonuses).

Can't make my entry for day 1. "Bench Sumo entries for day 5 are now closed!"

I tried to change the "D=5" to "D=1" but without success. Can anyone help?

Change to "D=6" and you will be able to enter for some strange reason!

A quite annoying bug which I always need to fix at least twice before each start of the basho. Should be working again now.

Just catching up on all of this. My apologies for those who had problems entering on day 1 - and a big thanks to Jakusotsu for kicking the bug down.

Changing the entry day to day 6, does not help, as that only is for day 6.\

It is too late for this basho, but in such circumstances the original solution was to send you line up in time to the day-to-day gyoji. However, with the current  set up, Jakusotsu is the only player who can access the automation to make fixes.

That's really a shame as it cost me an eight-winner GBL. May I ask why it does not help to change the entry day? If the "Make this lineup the default for the remainder of the basho" box is checked, one would expect the automation to accept the entry as the default line-up in case no entry is submitted for a given day. IMO, it makes no sense at all that the Gyoji AutoAbsence kicks in if an entry was actually submitted..

It doesn't work that way. By registering for the basho, fifteen separate default lineup entries are already created for each day, so the "Make this lineup the default for the remainder of the basho" checkbox only adjusts the days after.

I'm just glad this nasty day-5-closed bug disappears after day 1. I'd be even more glad, however, if the master genius squishes it for good...

Well yes, I figured now that that's how it works, but it still does not make sense to me. It feels weird to see the auto absence droning despite being able to submit a line-up that was obviously meant for day 1.. Sorry @Athenayama for giving bad advice. :(

I was very surprised and very angry at first when I discovered my entry this morning by "autoabsence". And I should have won today with the entry I actually made, as you should have from what I understand. That being said, we're all good my friend. I'll certainly won't blame you for anything, you just tried to help. Let's both take our revenge on that bloody bug by winning our 14 remaining days ! :-D

Hi everyone!

Here is the updated standings for the Zentoryu Quality of Sumo Award for 2021 after the May 2021 basho.  This is the combined results of the ZQoSA from July 2020 to May 2021.

It reads like this.....

Current ZQoSA position - (Change from after March 2021) - Rank on the May 2021 banzuke - shikona - Total ZQoSA points from the previous 6 bashos - (points change from after May 2021 - basically the points gained for May 2021, as May 2020 did not take place).

Norizo and Bill hold onto the top two spots, but Damimonay makes a big leap up to third place. Damimonay did not participate in July 2020, so his score is based on five bashos only. If he turns up in July 2021, he will have an excellent chance to overtake the top two, as they will both be losing points (July 2020), and he won't be.

Flohru has dropped out of the top ten, replaced by Metzinowaka.

Rikishimiezi is the biggest mover, climbing eleven places, yet remains categorised as 'Juryo level' - despite being ranke in Makunouchi.

Over-and-out-until-July!

So after seeing myself not nearly as far down on the list as I expected, I went and checked how my drone line up did, and somehow I managed a jun-yusho.  I've been waiting to fall to Makushita via droning before calling it quits for good, but this turn of events likely gave me a ton more basho to go.

Hi all,

Here is the real new bench banzuke for July 2021. It was put together by Flohru, Sakura and Jejima, under the ever-watchful eyes of Asashosakari, Ekigozan, Kaiomitsuki and Kintamayama.

With the intai of the Yokozuna at the top of the banzuke, an 'extra space' has been created to the benefit of most players. Flohru has accepted the rijicho's invitation to restart the game at the ms10W rank (giving kosho Aminoumi a surprise mini promotion.) Speaking of Aminoumi, she has accepted her invitation to join the Bench Sumo Yokozuna Deliberation Council, replacing Sakura, who has given up her seat due to a conflict of interests with her new role on the banzuke making committee.

Anyway, more good luck than usual, with a few tiny pockets of slight bad luck, so I think most players will be pleased with their new ranks.

Here it is!
