Basho Talk - Aki Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++

I think just Yusho will do. He has amazing 3 basho streak.

Not that he will get it or anything, I always get my hopes up and then he lets me down. Not this time Kisenosato, not this time.

Edit: Also who is this Okinoumi impersonator? Where is Okinoumi and what have you done to him! This extends to Takanoiwa as well.

Okinoumi-Kakuryu: looked like a torinaoshi case to me.

No. Kakuryu was in an unwinnable position when Okinoumi stepped out.

Nice payday for Okinoumi today. Also Aminishiki showing he's not out of it yet! Takanoiwa may be a spoiler this basho, both sekiwake have fallen victim to him. Yoshikaze put up quite the fight, but Harumafuji prevailed in the end. Aside from Kakuryu, all the other yokozuna and ozeki won today.

Amakaze seems to be the only rikishi who talks more than the interviewer during his interviews, which is awesome :)

Gagamaru is another one, at least when he's on a roll.

Congratulations to Okinoumi for his kinboshi. He's in a great position, let's see if he can keep it up.

Favorite match of the day: Harumafuji and Yoshikaze. Was really looking forward to this one and wasn't disappointed. Yoshikaze came to throw down, but Harumafuji was just too much for him.

The crowd seemed to be really, really into it today, making lots of noise and enjoying themselves, which made it more enjoyable for me as well. Great day of sumo.

Okinoumi is looking amazing and in is now in quite the position. If he can beat Harumafuji tomorrow he would be 3-0 and having already faced the top 3.

It will be tough though. Harumafuji looks seriously fired up.

Yes, yes, a funny day.

Curious bouts by Ura and Osu. Fabulous defending. Ura nows how to work the bales and damn is that kid quick. Kitaharima almost had Osu, but Osu was like YOU NO HENKA ME, BITCH! After the bout he then stops and it looks like he tries to give him a helping hand, very nice guy. Aminishiki shows again, why he survived so long in makuuchi, superb technique.

Mitakeumi did as expected, I hope we see him vs. Ura next basho. Takekaze vs. Kotoyuuki made my day. Kise back on the tracks, Harumafuji in beast mode, the kadobans win, very nice. Let's see, if Kakuryu backs out the next days, i have a bad feeling about that.

Yeah, I'm thinking if Kakuryu loses tomorrow he'll go kyujo for the rest of the basho. But that will put serious pressure on him for Kyushu.

After his nice, easy-on-the-injuries, one move win yesterday, I wonder how much it cost Harumafuji to be forced to play Yoshikaze's wildly abandoned game. That must have repercussions when you're nursing several less than perfect joints...

And that Ura's the real deal, isn't he?

How can his opponents ever suss out what he's going to do? How does one become familiar with the unexpected?

I mean, just when you think he's going to have to resort to some trickery, he turns it around with a straight(ish) oshi dashi against the much bigger guy who was knocking him all over the place. It came from nowhere!

People keep saying he's too small and he's going to hit the wall. Maybe so, but Ura doesn't seem to believe it, and that counts for a great deal.

Man, listen to that collision in Terunofuji v Kaisei. Wouldn't wanna be in the middle of that! But Terunofuji showing off that famous strength of his and heaving Kaisei down for the win.

I wonder if Kotoyuki pulled himself together. I sure hope so, he can't afford another disappointing performance like last basho.

Is it just me or does Shohozan's scary face keep getting bigger? He always seems rather grim, I imagine he must be pretty intimidating. He is doing well so far and showed great focus in yesterday's (day one) bout.

Since Kinta brought it up, I'm curious what people think: Can Takayasu get double digit wins this basho? I would personally love to see Takayasu do this, he's got great fighting spirit; every time he gets knocked down the banzuke, he comes right back up to try it again. You have to admire that determination. Ganbatte, Takayasu!

Down in Juryo, Osunaarashi manhandles a smaller opponent, one of his specialties, while Ura just blows me away with how good his balance is. And a win for Aminishiki, who I'm sure most of us are cheering on.

Great day of sumo, and one that bodes an exciting tournament. Kanpai!

A few respected posters here posted that rikishi will figure out how to beat Ura.   I don't think there is any sure way to beat Ura though.   He is too athletic, his balance out of this world.   Sure, he will be beat often enough but there isn't going to be an easy way.  And the guy is strong despite his size.   He seems to be getting bigger, too.  Check out his thighs - all hard muscle, and huge.

Are Harumafuji/Kakuryū injured? Haven’t been following the news.

Okinoumi looking like he should be the next yokozuna over Kisenosato. Let’s see if he can keep it up.

the Kak is injured. Harumafuji, do you even need to ask? The man is always injured.

Harumafuji beating Yoshikaze is a great sign, since he doesn't always do well against Yoshikaze.

As to this basho, I have a feeling that Haru positions himself to yusho. Kse, sadly, another 12 wins.

They just need to start blasting him off the dohyo in three seconds or less. Seiro got close today, just lacked the horsepower.

At the rate he's putting on weight they'll be catching up to Ura soon enough.

Yeah he has to go out quick or he gets very bendy and crafty. He is very good at going with the flow and then striking when he finds a moment. He is very cool to watch, I hope he can keep moving up and be a unique one to watch. I love Toyonoshima, he doesn't always win for obvious reasons but sometimes he is brilliant. Satoyama can't quite hang in makuuchi, so I hope Ura can be unique and succeed enough to stay up there.

That's the way, but it's not really fair to even compare Ura to Mainoumi. Mainoumi was ridiculously strong for his size, Ura is not.
