SumpaX Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 A play off between Endo and Goeido would be nice.. :D
d_golem Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 So I think it's a two-horse race between Endo and Goeido then, only Endo is half-a-furlong behind Goeido with only a furlong to go but hey, an Endo yusho will generate even more public euphoria then a Goeido yusho @0@ 1
luispereira Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 if Endo wins I quit sumo... or better, if Goeido loses the yusho he can quit sumo :P either way, very happy for the two of them! 3
fwuzzle23 Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 By this point, I can only assume Goeido found a Hyperbolic Time Chamber somewhere... 2

Explains how he looks approximately a year older than his official age. By this time next year, all rikishi will have spiky, blond hair and the poor tokoyamas have to invent a new style of mage, called the Saiyan-mage, utilising cords made of the hair from Shenron's armpits... 1

Even seeing that written seems so wrong. Other news of the day: Ura is officially tasting a cold hand now, however this is good. Ura is finally a rikishi and a true practioner of Sumo. Welcome to the jungle kid, enjoy the breath of the wild. Chiyonokuni has a KK. He keeps on climbing ever higher towards the Sanyaku, haven't had a MK since the recovery from his previous injury looks stronger than ever. Nishikigi is also close, very close to KK. Daiki and Onosho are having a heck of a race in Juryo. Daiki may clutch this. Oyanagi did indeed get his KK yesterday I think? Joins the Juryo clownfiesta, gratz. Yamaguchi sweeps up Tamaki and returns to Juryo with 7-0 Yusho victory. He will be placed rather high in Juryo I'd wager and is looking very strong. Next basho we will have Ura, Oyanagi, Sato and Yamaguchi in Juryo. Excitement! Tamaki finishes strong 6-1 only losing to Yamaguchi. Will be placed high in Makushita next basho. Ishibashi is 5-1 and will also have a bump in his rankings, maybe 6-1 will elevate him high also. All this talent creeping up. Kotokamatani is also in Makushita and is 5-1 he too has a chance to get 6-1 and be place considerably higher in the next banzuke. Only 18 years old, only 18 and he is also showing this much potential. Damn he is gonna be scary in 5 years when he matures more. Ikegawa down in Sandame is 5-1, showing really strong sumo once again. Even if his winstreak came to an end. Could get 6-1 record and join Makushita. Most likely will still be Makushita even without 6-1. Apparenly the creeping monster the past few basho's is Kizaki. He just won another Yusho and will overtake or take similar spot in the Makushita Banzuke with Ikegawa with 7-0 Yusho victory. Kizaki is one of the two rikishi who have beaten Ikegawa currently. Although his victory was a playoff last basho. Hatooka who is consistant is also hanging down in Sandanme. Collecting third consecutive 6-1 record. Speaking of 6-1 Asahiryu the Mongolian newbie got his second 6-1 record back to back. More scary talent is coming. Kurahashi and Shuji are determining the Jonidan Yusho in the final day. Down in Jonokuchi returning Masunoyama took the Yusho cleanly with 7-0. Edited September 23, 2016 by Jyuunomori 5
Tsubame Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Hakuho is just cruel. Step 1 Sitting a basho out, let an ozeki win and let him have hopes (and dreams) of the white tsuna. Step 2 Comming back and crush all hopes! 4

If Goeindou zensho yusho, NSK will ask for 13 wins or better for promotion next basho. If not, another yusho. Kisenosato's yokozuna dream gone forever...

ALAKTORN Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 (edited) Wow. So Kisenosato will really be the only O/Y without a yūshō. Even retired Kotoōshū and Baruto had a yūshō… unless Endō takes it, which would be even crazier. 4 hours ago, gijo said: Is doping allowed in Ozumo? No, it’s not. It must be happening from time to time, though. Edited September 23, 2016 by ALAKTORN
Morty Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 After 10 long years we get at least two Japanese yushos in a year. Who would have thunk it? 1
Rocks Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Wow, what a great match between Harumafuji and Goeido. Just awesome entertainment. I was waiting for the ギロ, ぎろ to pop up on the screen like a manga at the stare down. Kisenosato seems like he's ready to let someone else have the hype for awhile. Kak has had an awesome basho considering he looked miserable at the start. Tough loss for Takayasu but he's got his double digit wins and he gets to beat up on Endo tomorrow to give Goeido the yusho. I expect Goeido to go 15-0 now. Okinoumi, you're breakin my heart buddy. If there is such a thing as a great makekoshi Takanoiwa has it. Great sumo but no luck.. Congrats to Sato for his KK too. Unbelievable after that terrible 1-4 start.
Rocks Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 BTW, that match with Harumafuji and Goeido is a prime example of why Harumafuji is my favorite Yokozuna. He has great sumo, obviously, but Hakuho has him there easily. Harumafuji is way more dramatic and charismatic IMO though.
rzombie1988 Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Kisenosato was awful today. That was a terrible bout. Props to Goeido for getting it done today. Yay for new people winning titles.
WAKATAKE Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 What an amazing day in sumo. Endo in contention for the yusho? And this basho is guaranteed to have a Japanese win! That is something to say the least. I myself will admit that I never would have given Goeido the chance of even winning the yusho, let alone keep his ozeki rank after the lackluster performances he has had recently. With Hakuho out the basho really was interesting, don't you say? The only real disappoint that I would have is in Kisenosato, who just does not seem to have what it takes to be a yokozuna.
robnplunder Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Sorry, Endo fans. The best he will do is a jun-yusho. This basho is Goeido's. No playoff is needed. For those who are obsessed with Hakuho and Hakuho related conspiracy theories, I have one thing to say. It sure was/is a lot of fun without him in this basho.
Dwale Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 I can sum this one up succinctly: one of the best days of sumo I've ever seen! Yeah, I've only been watching on the regular for a few years- still. Amazing. And that staredown between Goeido and Harumafuji... I got chills. I was watching with my girlfriend and we were both just like, "Uh-oh, it's about to go down!" XD 1

And I think it's 100% psychological, too, and not even really his fault.
RabidJohn Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Yes, Tochinoshin, that's what I mean: do something useful with it when you lift them off their feet! Was that really 'only' a shitatenage when he picked Myogiryu up and slammed him down? What a fantastic day of sumo! Finding myself rooting for Goeido yesterday was surreal, but today I started wondering if he can go one better than Kotoshogiku and get a zensho... I don't know about rikishi being replaced by aliens, temporarily or otherwise - I'm wondering if somehow I've been transferred to a parallel universe!

If he does he will be the first Japanese rikishi to do so in 20 years. BTW, zensho-yusho happens at Aki more than any other basho. So Goeido has that going for him. Okinoumi's nightly kidnapping by aliens was true. He was taken at night for a week for experiments on a human body. He was given alien substance to see how a human body reacts to hostile acts. But these experiments only ran for a week. Once the experiment stopped, Okinoumi recovered from the substance and is suffering the aftermath. Goeido's experiment is still on-going. He is responding well to the alien substance & experiment and his experiment was extended. Do not expect Oki and Goeido to repeat their performance in the next basho. The aliens will be long gone by then. Mitakeumi, a Sanyaku in the next basho? That'd mean Shodai will join the rank two basho later. Edited September 23, 2016 by robnplunder

As I said before the basho, with Hakuho absent, everyone will fight hard and Kise's chance dwindles -- he is not the yokozuna material after all.

Sadly I think having Hakuho away may have put even MORE pressure in Kise, "Hakuho is injured, now's your chance!". Kise just doesn't do well under pressure. At this point I think he is doomed to be a long serving ozeki which isn't a horrible think as I enjoyed Kaoi's long career but even he got yushos... will Kise ever get one in makuuchi now? I'm not sure he will.
