Yes he did and he finally fought an Ozeki and won on the 12th day. The difference being Goeido is beating all of the top guys so far. He still has Kotoshogiku, Harumafuji and maybe a top performing Maegashira left. I can't see him losing all three of those matches and I think he will beat Kotoshogiku.

I'm happy for Aminishiki today, got his sixth win today and should be guaranteed to stay in Juryo for next basho now. Plus when he competes tomorrow he will move into sole tenth place for most career matches!

my guess is a 14-1 with a loss to harumafuji to keep is "interesting"

Yeah, I can read into the difference sir.

The final bout today looked veeeery strange to me as it seems like Kakuryu profusely avoided to grab Goeido's mawashi although he had ample opportunity. Still problems with his shoulder? Or....

Asashoryu commented today after the Goeido v Kakuryu match.  Directed to Kakuryu, something along the line of, "Who the hell is this guy?  That pull was embarrassing!!  Hey, do this seriously!!"

Looking at his record he was in the upper megashira ranks and I would say he was getting experience and promising well. He is able of great sumo. I don't see him as Yok, but regular sanyaku, when the old ones will intai....

Me too! His pre-bout routine was indeed something to see! The crowd really got into it too. Sadly his career was well into its decline when I saw him live.

I never thought to check, have any of his deshi done anything similar? Not exactly what he should be trying to teach them but I have always wondered.

Boy, if you had told me 5 days ago Okinoumi wouldn't get to 10 wins I would have said you were nuts. Looking increasingly likely now he doesn't get double digits. Very sad end to one of the greatest 1st weeks ever.

Yeah...when I saw Takamisakari live in January of 2013, he was in Juryo. I've been back to the Kokugikan 3 times since. Just booked a couple weeks ago for January 2017. Sincerely hoping that all three current Yokozuna are healthy and participating.

I think we are going to be seeing relatively the same group around for the next 5 years. It's honesty sad when I think there's a better chance of Terunofuji retiring than people with many years on him.

He was in mid-high maegashira when I saw him but still well on his way down from when he was a regular elevator rikishi getting into komusubi where he'd get a terrible makekoshi before doing well after his demotion and heading back up again. He was notable not just for his pre-bout routine but also for his politeness post-bout as well, otherwise I probably wouldn't even remember him well. Other maegashira names on those old banzuke's I don't always recall but I will always remember Takamisakari.

Been a long while since I've been to the Kokugikan, sadly...

Is there any chance Goeido isn't winning the tournament? He could lose to Harumafuji (which I see as more likely than not) but who else is going to beat him? Kotoshogiku isn't taking a w against Goeido in this tournament for sure and the only other guys who are doing well enough that they could possibly beat Goeido (Kakuryu, Kisenosato and Takayasu) have already faced him and lost. 

Who would've thought Goeido would be in contention for Yokozuna promotion next basho, while he was kadoban during this one.

Thanks. I wanted one which only showed those who went on a successful Yokozuna run right after being kadoban. I can click through this list to figure it out for myself however it also raises funny questions like why 14-1Y 11-4 14-1Y wasn't enough to promote Takanohana II in the first place. Two yusho in a row was good enough... makes you really think about the current promotion standards. But to my question it doesn't look like anyone has really ever done this, bounced back directly from a kadoban into a successful yokozuna run. Most took at least one more basho to get into their proper run.

That's why it's all so weird. At the start of this basho I was actually somewhat hoping Goeido would be demoted as he wasn't doing the title of Ozeki any favors with his lackluster performances but when you look at how he has fought this basho he's suddenly carrying himself more like a Yokozuna than Kakuryu is (even though that is not that difficult to accomplish).

And I know he lost, but that was Kaisei A on the dohyo today, wasn't it?

Most surreally, I found myself rooting for Goeido today...
