Benihana Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Ok, Ura vs. Osunaarashi for juryo-yusho is almost a no-brainer if both are in a physically good condition, but do you really think we will see Aminishiki? I hope so, but...

808morgan Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Amakaze is a funny guy, I can't wait to see what he can do.

Going from J11 to M13 in just one basho is an enormous jump. Out of curiosity, has anyone in recent memory had such a huge increase in rank in such a short time? It seems like Amakaze has a pretty good sense of humor. Considering that the competition at his new rank will be much stronger than he has ever faced, he'll probably need it. As for Ura, I can't see him doing any better than 11-4 which may not be good enough for Yusho. Edited August 31, 2016 by robnplunder
Andonishiki Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 It is almost a crime to keep Daieisho in Makuuchi, but leave Osunaarashi and Ura out..... (nothing against Daiesho personally.... don't get me wrong) It would have been soooo much more exciting for fans to see Osunaarashi and Ura in the top division. yes agreed, Amakaze won the Yusho with a strong 13-2, but still - in my humble opinion - no need to put him higher than J1e if NHK really wants the Juryo Yusho winner promoted at all costs, then drop Daieisho and probably also Tokushoryu. What could help is an uneven number of makuuchi fighters on most days due to drop-outs, then Osuna/Ura will get the chance to fight with the big boys quite often, I guess. (and part of the digest videos...) but still, they will be missing BIG TIME in the Makuuchi Dohyo-iri. what if a M1 gets a 0-0-15, will he be dropped as well ? or even a komusubi ?

Amakaze won two bouts more being 3 ranks below. That is usually enough to get a better a spot. I don't want to turn this topic into an echo chamber, but Osunaarashi's demotion was too tough. I am usually lenient with those things and tend to say that it is just "bad luck" but this is a bit too much. Are you curious to see how Ichinojo performs at this rank ? To be honest, me neither. I never quite jumped on his bandwagon even when he started, I won't do so now. But Shodai again at M2 might be interesting to see. If Kitataiki manages to get a kachi-koshi I will stop rooting for the Cubs after 25+ years to become a White Sox fan. Ok, I am joking, but that gives an idea of how unlikely I see that. 3
Gurowake Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 As to Ichinojo, one thing to keep in mind that he was very young for an MsTD entrant, having won the corporate championships basically right out of high school. He's still the third youngest in Makuuchi, with Daieisho and Kagayaki being younger, and only Sato and Onosho are younger in Juryo. Despite their later starts, Ura, Daiki, Mitakeumi and Shodai are all older than Ichinojo (they finished college before entering). Ichinojo was heavily hampered by his fondness for sweets after his first few sekitori basho and became Ichinoslow. If he can manage to stay in good fighting shape he'll be a force to be reckoned with 1
robnplunder Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I wasn't following sumo when Ichinojo burst into the scene. Based on what I have seen of him so far, he seems to lack speed, strength, stamina, and aggression to move further up. He has the size and that's about it. IMHO, speed & aggression cannot be taught. He may make an Ozeki one day but I don't see much of greatness which his countrymen have.

Oh he is one of the biggest hams in Sumo, between him, Toyonoshima and the Chiyo bros he gives me the funniest pictures. The one where he looks really surprised at Ichi's weight during the health checks is gold. He is second in weight only to Ichi at this point, I admit I haven't studies his skills as much as his humor so I am curious what his style is like. I might cruise around Youtube and see if I can find some bouts. Well I just found the one of Ura during Haru 2016 and Ura got him quick, so he may not be very quick and go for the oshi dashi a lot. Ahogeyama Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 Re: Ura's juryo yusho chances: I give him a fighter's chance to win. He stumbled a little last basho and wasn't 100%, but he should be healthier this time around. I'm not confident that Osunaarashi will be in the same sort of shape that he was in the last time he had to spend a tournament in juryo, but considering the competition, I think a KK should be a safe bet for both wrestlers. Money's on Ura and Osu, but the darkhorse should be Daiki. I think he gets 11 wins and gets a makuuchi promotion.
Kintamayama Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 My guess is Ura goes makekoshi- the wall awaits. 3

Sumozumo Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 I'm thinking now that Ura will probably get injured this basho. Unfortunately.
