Ozumo beyond 2020 basho for foreign visitors

To introduce Japanese culture to the world, to get into the mood going towards the Olympics, the government selected 8 trial projects from among 71 that had applied for it, ozumo and fireworks among them. Each project will be given up to 10 million yen public funds, the trial events start in August. More projects will be selected later in the year.

The NSK had proposed the "Ozumo beyond 2020 basho", a jungyo-type 1day event in October especially for foreigners: Sumo culture will be explained in English.

Apart from the torikumi also mage preparation etc.

A trial for this

Oguruma proposed a special natsu jungyo event in the kokugikan, after the Olympic boxing tournament held there is over, and before the Paralympics start, for which the kokugikan won't be used.

Jungyo usually are held at places where no main basho takes place, but this one is meant especially to show sumo as Japanese traditional culture to the tourists, which are expected to come in greater numbers then than now.

About 3000 foreigners, disabled persons etc. (it's PR for the Paralympics 2020 as well) will be invited - no tickets are sold to the public. Simultaneous translation in the hall announcement, sign language and something for the visual impaired will be provided. Only the 3rd time in this kokugikan, the last was by Takanohana and Akebono 21 years ago - they had one 20 years ago at the Ise shrine, that was the last event. The pic of the first for the completion ceremony of the new kokugikan in Sep. 1985 was in the In Memoriam galleries for the 2 yokozuna then, a new one from Sponichi today http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/09/11/kiji/K20160911013333350.html

This isn't a Yokozuna dohyo-iri, there's no problem with Ozeki or even lower-ranking rikishi taking part if needed. Tamanishiki and Onosato did an all-Ozeki performance back in the early 1930s, IIRC. If either Yokozuna had been unable to take part, an Ozeki would have been called up as replacement, likely either Goeido as last yusho winner, or Kisenosato as top Ozeki on the last banzuke.

Kakuryu felt it to be an honor to partake in the ceremony, noting that not all Yokozuna get to do this.

Hakuho has stated that he wants to remain active until the Tokyo Olympics.
