Looking back at this, I wonder if stepping down as the rikishi kaicho was one factor in letting Hakuho concentrate on going all out on his way to that 15-0 this last basho?

A seemingly idiotic choice by Hakuho:

He stepped down as rikishi-kai top and now he announced that after the sumo world championships in Mongolia, which start next week, he'll be the successor of ex-Kyokushuzan as president of the federation that supervises amateur sumo in Mongolia.

Hakuho will be presenter at the world championships, for ex-Kyokushuzan it will be the final task as president.

Looks like he's slowly shifting towards a life after sumo in Mongolia - not towards becoming an oyakata.

Harumafuji left for Mongolia as well.

Are we sure that he is not going to hand over that to Harumafuji as well when Harumafuji retires?

Edit: Was ex-Kyokushuzan his benefactor when he first came to Japan? He might be just paying back his debt while staying on as a seat warmer while looking for a suitable replacement.

I doubt he wants to play 2nd fiddle while ex-Asashoryu holds a more prominent position as head of the wrestling federation.

And from today, it's Kakuryuu, after Harumafuji will not be available any longer to fulfill his duties.

Why can't Harumafuji still fulfill his duties? Was there a scandal or something? I'm sure there would have been a thread about it here.
