Kintamayama Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 The Juryo promotions have been announced. Ura(23) and Satou(19) the two most promising rikishi of late, for the first time. Returning is 33 year old veteran Tamaasuka after three basho in the desert. 3
kuroimori Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) As already correctly predicted in the "Promotion/Demotion/Locomotion" thread, 3 rikishi have been promoted to Juryo for the next honbasho in May. New to Juryo are: ms2w Ura (6-1) ms9e Sato (7-0 Yusho) Returning to Juryo is: ms1w Tamaasuka (5-2) aka Ta(dai)maasuka Source: Jiji Press (jiji.com) Edited March 30, 2016 by kuroimori 2
Gurowake Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 No new shikona for either of them? Endo and Shodai started a fad apparently. All the cool new prospects keep their family name.
Katooshu Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) Very interested to see how the diminutive but skilled newcomers fare...I love watching juryo (I particularly enjoy the bouts of relatively small but fast-paced rikishi like Ishiura, Kitarahima, and Chiyonokuni, as well as those of the unorthodox Satoyama) but I'll be especially excited about it next basho! College star Daiki, who lost to the two youngsters but defeated Tamaasuka last basho, seems to be on track to join them soon as well. Edited March 30, 2016 by Katooshu
Monnodo Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I can not really imagine Sato not getting a shikona of sorts at some point (I am going to make a wild guess and say it will start with Taka). But Ura might just stick to the name he is already somewhat known for. I love his name anyway
Asashosakari Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 But Ura might just stick to the name he is already somewhat known for.Newer fans might be getting confused when they see a skinny, jumpy juryo guy now, though. They might be forced to ask, "Is he Ura or Ishiura?" 6
rhyen Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 If he jumps, it's Ishiura. If he dives, it's Ura. If he is brave, it might be Terutsuyoshi. 8

I love his name anyway According to Sumo Reference, 48 rikishi already fought with the shikona Satō, but he will be the first sekitori to keep it. Edited March 30, 2016 by serge_gva

That's what I meant, thanks! (Or is it an anti-jinx routine?) 1
Naganoyama Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 I thought that that was what you meant, but I thought it was best to make sure!
Asashosakari Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 (edited) I can not really imagine Sato not getting a shikona of sorts at some point (I am going to make a wild guess and say it will start with Taka).Likely upon his makuuchi debut, says Sports Hochi. Stuff I also learned from that Hochi article: Prior to taking up sumo in third grade, Sato was doing kyokushin karate since age 5. --- Meanwhile, returning Tamaasuka has a lofty goal for his remaining career: Another kachikoshi in makuuchi. The last (and only) one was only 11 years ago... Edited March 31, 2016 by Asashosakari 2
Katooshu Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Could an eggplant related shikona be on the way for Ura? 1
Kasutera Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Could an eggplant related shikona be on the way for Ura? Daishonasu 大翔茄子 has a nice ring to it. 2
torquato Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Daishonasu 大翔茄子 has a nice ring to it. He is in Kise beya not Oitekaze. I'd guess 大茄子 (Ōnasu) would work in almost any stable... ;-) BTW, are there any special shikona rules in Kise-beya? 1
kuroimori Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Could an eggplant related shikona be on the way for Ura? Is he aiming to become the first Yokonasu? 2
