Tenshinhan Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I also wouldn't count out Yamaguchi. Whatever happened to him he appears to have recovered a great deal in the past year. Yes, I actually didn't notice his long kachikoshi streak. Something terrible must have happened to him in 2014 but now he really seems to be back on track.
SkinnySumo Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 The sound of Kotoyuki's bark sums up my excitement for this basho! HHUUUUU! 1
CT3* Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 For whatever reason,it's very hard for me to envision Goeido as a legitimate threat. Either way, my planned trip to Tokyo to take in part of the May basho is still in limbo. I've held off on booking my flight to see the outcome of this tournament. I figured if Kotoshogiku won and was promoted to Yokozuna, tickets would be nigh IMPOSSIBLE to get. And methinks a Kisenosato victory would have a similar affect. So all I can do is wait and watch. Makes it all a bit more exciting than usual!
ScottyJoyJrBebe Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 For the second basho in-a-row, the Day 11 match has MAJOR ramifications for the yusho. I'm not giving up on Kotoshogiku yet, as he still has a chance to finish strong with 12-3, and possibly have a goal of 13 victories to shoot for in May. Terunofuji is now the Ozeki I'm worried about.
Dwale Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I think even if Terunofuji were to fully lose his ozeki status, he would reclaim it at some future point. Of course, he's not done yet, here. Until he gets an eighth loss, I'm not going to worry.
Benevolance Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) If Terunofuji loses his ozeki status this tournament, he gets a bonus round to get it back 10 wins next tournament. Edit: That said, he needs to pick up wins on 2/5 remaining days and he won't face Harumafuji and he's already faced Hak. Put me down for "feigned suspense". Edited March 22, 2016 by Benevolance 1

Take it with a pinch of 2ch-flavoured salt, but I read on some 2ch board last year that Yamaguchi was diagnosed with a thyroid condition and had treatment for it. (I dunno...) 1
kuroimori Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 (edited) Holy crap, I just realised Kotoyuuki is gonna be sekiwake next basho! But who'll be the other one? OK, in the worst case Terunofuji but other than that happening or either Takarafuji or Takayasu pulling off a small miracle they're going to have to dig quite deep till Ikioi or even Myogiryu. And it might happen that neither of them will have a particularly good score either... Not so fast! he still needs to bag in his kachikoshi first. And don't forget that both Ikioi (7-3 at M4) and Myogiryu (8-2 at M6) both could still leapfrog him. Or was this meant to be a jinx? ;-) Edited March 23, 2016 by kuroimori 1
kuroimori Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 So it seems like Kisenosato has finally found the right medication, a mix of some anti-jinx powder and some prophylactic brain-fart pills. 1
kuroimori Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Ichino-slow has transformed back to The Ichino-chosen one
Dwale Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 So it seems like Kisenosato has finally found the right medication, a mix of some anti-jinx powder and some prophylactic brain-fart pills. He needs to share.

Even if Ikioi and Myogiru (or even Kaisei or Takarafuji) hit it big, I'm pretty confident Kotoyuki will have a Sanyaku berth for May. Exactly which one is still to come, as he only REALLY NEEDS 1 out of 5 for a minimum K1w. As stated earlier, I for one would like to hope this is the start of something big, as so many people have commented that the only future star of substance is Terunofuji.
ScottyJoyJrBebe Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Ichino-slow has transformed back to The Ichino-chosen one IchinOzeki. At one point, I hoped he could be the "Hokutoumi" to Terunofuji's "Chiyonofuji", I have now decided to take it down some.
hamcornheinz Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Yusho at Sekiwake is an automatic Ozeki promotion, no?
Treblemaker Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Someone waking up from a 6-year nap and having a look at the Leaderboard might think krazy things... I mentioned the parity at the top - and how better to illustrate it than the top 5 people after 10 days: Kise leading? ( (W00t, w00t, w00t...) ), followed by Hak and Goeido? ( (Hit the wall...) ), followed closely by Myogiryu and Ichinojo? ( (Poking the other guy...) )?????? HF? The Geek? The Kak? Terunofuji? Tochinoshin? Where are these guys? And when was the last time Hak and Goeido were at equal ranking during a basho? And what fumes is Kise sniffing? Pick a winner? No way. Not this time. Anyone who's betting has balls of steel. This is getting to be like NFL betting... Rolling dice fixed to kites attached to whales would give a better outcome of what's going to happen in the next 5 days. It's almost like watching a Doctor Who episode. And blood everywhere. Now THIS is a civilized sport. 1
Katooshu Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 (edited) Yes! Osu now with a two win cushion at juryo, as he beats Chiyoo and Nishikigi continues to struggle with Chiyonokuni. Edited March 23, 2016 by Katooshu
Katooshu Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 (edited) Brodi really needs to work on getting lower. His thrusting hasn't reached a point where he can usually prevent opponents at this level from closing the distance, and when they do they're finding it too easy to get a strong grip underneath him and drive him back. Kintamayama Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Yusho at Sekiwake is an automatic Ozeki promotion, no? No. 33 wins over three bashos is an automatic Ozeki promotion.
