Guess Kisenosato's Aite (M1E Kotoyuki) - March 2016

Day 5. I was told this game would be heaps of fun. Little did I know that some of my my fellow SumoForumites are boarding JR trains. Meanwhile in Greece, I surrender myself to the non-dignity of boarding 60-year-old former cargo trains running on 120-year-old iron rails. I take off my coat and hat, sit down, and shudder at the disappointment the next stop has caused everyone. Thankfully, in my home country, the good thing is that there are few laws forbidding people to do harmless things that would elsewhere be questionably legal. One such non-law is bringing your own food on the train. Indeed, a black-clad elderly woman sitting across the aisle, a villager by the looks of her, is managing to eat a hard-boiled egg despite having about two and a half teeth to speak of. Myself, I opted for delicious home-made meatballs. Finally, the diminuitive yet overweight conductor arrives.

"What is your final destination, sir?", the moving Musashimaru chibi demands.

"No clue. Could I get a day ticket to Goueidou, please?", I request, tentative in awaiting the travel-sized Quasimodo's reaction, squeezing my meatball in anxiety, ruing the kadoban meatball I am about to travel to. Thankfully, the meatball in uniform doesn't seem to care.

"That'll be... bloody hell, that'll be... look, I don't remember the fare, but I'm sure it was too much not to get you angry, but low enough for you to not boycott the train company altogether."

I silently reach in my wallet and hand him 30 euros. He prints out a ticket on his Paleolithic-era noisy portable machine and waddles away.

"Goueidou...", my next-seat neighbour says as the hard-boiled-egg granny across the aisle stares on, "isn't that in the Ozeki region?"

Suddenly, the granny swallows her hard-boiled egg, rises from the paper-thin train seat, and barks loudly. She removes her Grim Reaper-style dress to reveal a sky blue mawashi wrapped around a young, strong body. I am surprised to see that she has obtained male characteristics and a full set of teeth. With tears streaming down his face, Kotoyuuki exlaims:

"Ozeki? Not as long as I'm on this train, if I can have a say in it!" He tosses a fistful of salt in a perfect arc down the aisle, marching towards the first-class wagons as every passenger on this train turns out to be a sumo gamer from this site. We all cheer, Kotoyuuki bursting into tears of emotion as he barks his way to greatness.

(had some time to kill, so I wrote a short story. For the actual pick read the bits in bold only. Any thoughts on the story by the way?)

And the train has safely arrived in Goeido-eki. What out for connecting trains.

Might as well finish the off-zekis: Terunofuji on Day 6.

As try as I might to justify any particular schedule that involves Terunofuji in a sanyaku bout, there is little reason to think that the overall chance of anyone else facing Kotoyuki in particular is higher. For each schedule that works that doesn't put Terunofuji against a sanyaku opponent, there is another that does, and who Kotoyuki faces in those situations could be Toyonoshima, Yoshikaze, or even Ikioi (or someone else lower ranked). On day 4 I had come to a very firm consideration that Kakuryu would face a Komusubi and Goeido would not for reasons that turned out to be faulty, but especially now there are just so many potential schedules that work, one might as well go with the "default". At least the second week will be somewhat interesting.

6. Terunofuji
