So I purchased this postcard for the equivalent of 50 cents and I'm wondering who are the rikishi on it.

My guesses:

Top left - Kitanofuji?

Top right - Kitanofuji vs. Takanohana?

Bottom left on the left - Takamiyama? vs ?

Bottom right - ? vs ?

I am literally going to send homemade cookies to the person who can tell me (and prove that what they're saying is true) who the guy on the left in the bottom right picture is (any rumpologists around here?). Note: I make very good cookies.

Reckon you're right with Kitanofuji - the third image in my google search could be that photo from a different angle.

Wondering if the rikishi whose face we can see in the bottom right image is Daikirin:

The gyoji is obviously (a former) Shikimori Inosuke, so one of them will need to be near the top of the banzuke.

I have this same postcard on my kitchen table at this moment! When I attended my first basho in 2013, I actually mailed this postcard to myself before leaving Tokyo. When I went back last January to see Hakuho break the yusho record, I bought a bunch more (as well as a big duffel bag of sumo merchandise)!

Sadly the backside isn't naming the rikishi would have been too easy. I also didn't have luck finding the isolated image of the bottom right.

I first saw that postcard in 1975 at the Yokota Air Base exchange (department store) when I first moved to Japan, When I returned to Japan in 2007 the same postcard was being sold at the same store.

I think I might be the one to win my own cookies after all:

don't you guys think that the left rikishi in the bottom right picture might be Takamiyama? Look at those wristbands. Or maybe someone alse also used to wear two wristbands like these?

I don't think it's Takamiyama, he doesn't look heavy enough. Also, I seem to remember a few who taped their wrists. Arase comes to mind, but it doesn't look big enough to be him either.

Can we know the place ? Tokyo ? Osaka ? Nagoya ? Kyushu ?

We know the date... between march 1970 and 1974 ?

It's possible that the 4 pictures are from the same day (Senshuraku ?)

We recognize some rikishis (Kitanofuji, Mutsuarashi, Takanohana, Daikirin).

I'm pretty sure that we can find the others names with the Sumo Data base ;)

By querying "ryogoku kokugikan aki 1978" is it possible to see a pic taken in Aki78 in Tokyo between Takamiyama and Kitanoumi

And the background of the image fairly looks similar. It is plausible we are in Tokyo in the 70's

Let's assume that the pics where taken the same day.

Assuming that up-right pic is Kitanofuji vs Takanohana and bottom-left Takamiyama vs Mutsuarashi, is it possible to find a day where Kitanofuji vs Takanohana AND Takamiyama vs Mutsuarashi

Yes! Day 8 ok Aki 1971. Aki basho = good thing, it matches for the location

On this day, what did Daikirin? Win by oshidashi against Hoguroiwa. This DOES NOT match with the bottom-right image. HOWEVER the two first pics were taken from the same point of view, but the bottom-right one is taken from another point of view. So maybe the first two were taken on the same day and the third one another day in the same basho.

Having a look at Daikirin's torikumis, the day 5 (of Aki 1971) is interesting: he lost by sotogake to Takanohana. It is plausible for this pic to be a loss by sotogake, and it is plausible for the other rikishi to be Takanohana (same mawashi color, even if we do not have much more other clues).

So this is my guess :

up-right Aki 1971 Day 8 (Sept 19) Kitanofuji vs Takanohana
bottom-left Aki 1971 Day 8 (Sept 19) Takamiyama vs Mutsuarashi

bottom-right Aki 1971 Day 5 (Sept 16) Daikirin vs Takanohana

With the sumo data base - if the place is Kyushu !- my choice will be Kyushu 1973 day 15 with Kitanofuji vs Takanohana, Kitanoumi butt vs Daikirin, Yutakayama vs. Mutsuaarashi

Bottom left is definitely Takamiyama vs. probably Mutsuarashi. Top right is ??? vs. almost definitely Takanohana I. They are all the same venue, and it fits my increasingly vague memory of the old Kuramae Kokugikan in Tokyo (Orion or Washuyama?). Edited by Asojima

It's not Takanohana's butt (vs Daikirin)

Because we can see his face on the picture... He is sitting next to the dohyo on the left

Top right is the final match of the day because the bow twirler is seated between the two shimpan.

Ok this is consistent with my Aki basho 1971 Day 8 theory

And the gyoji in the back in the musubi-no-ichiban (I presume Shikimori Inosuke) seems to be the one refereeing the bottom-right bout.

On day 5, Daikirin vs Takanohana was the third-to-last bout so it is consistent with beeing refereed by Shikimori Inosuke. This is also consistent with my theory
