Hattorizakura finished again 0-7 - each time with very decisive losses. But he thinks "I now can persist more than before" and hopes for his 2nd career win next basho. "This basho it got much better, I want to make my tsuppari stronger." http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20161125-OHT1T50082.html

With this he became the first with not more than one career win to not either quit after one year or start winning more.

Last basho I thought he was a disgrace, but this basho is different. If he continues improving like he has, next basho will be different again and who knows, he could actuall start winning some bouts.

Tsuppari? I've seen more fierce games of patty cake.

I didn't see much improvement, or any potential.  How can one lose 47 out of 48 times?   I think any rikishi at any level can accidentally win more than 1 out of 48.   And for 8 bashos, he hasn't gained much weight, something a serious rikishi at his height/weight should have done.

And one more kachikoshi on Day 14 which saw long-time persister Oatari and newcomer Chida matched up at 3-3 - the new guy prevailed for his fourth win, which means Oatari has to join Hanai in double-digits MKs. Also victorious today were Asatatsuke (5-2), Shunpo (3-4), and our only potential applicant of the basho, Fukuda, who narrowly avoided his 3rd makekoshi with that. Losses were picked up by Miura (2-5) and Sawanofuji and Wada (both 1-6). We're nearly done here for the basho, as only Hanai has yet to have his 7th bout.

The improvement is in his fighting spirit.

Happy that Chida got his first kachi-koshi, but even more so because he outlasted the prediction made by our resident soothsayer... (Applauding...)

Hidenori Chida (千田 英紀), now registered as 185cm, 125kg. In junior high school he did soft tennis before switching to judo in senior high school. I might have to cheer for him solely because he avoided the usual shindeshi mantra of "sekitori in two years" or "dreaming of Yokozuna" etc.

Miura Asakayama Haru 2016 4 Jonokuchi 16 East Jonokuchi 14 6-17-5 0.261 1-1-5 2-5

Ose has decided to retire, and Satoiazuma continues to be banzuke-gai, so we'll be opening the new year with just 7 active persisters. Congrats again to the graduating quartet!
