Kintamayama Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 (edited) Akebono lost his third straight K-1 match today in Seoul, where the 2004 K-1 World Grand Prix is being held. He participated in an 8- man knockout tournament, but lost in the first round to a Chinese, Chou Kei Gun (Shiang Chin Jun-sp.?)- 18 years old... This time he went the distance but lost the decision. He was mostly passive and defending himself, and was warned time and again by the referee for being too passive. He was even booed by the disappointed crowd in the second half. His opponent was running circles around him and occasionally hitting right "straights" at his face. "I really wanted to attack, but he was running all over the place, so I couldn't use all the stuff I practiced", he said. His wife and his three kids were there. Yesterday he promised them the yusho. Popeye comes to mind.. Edited July 17, 2004 by Kintamayama
aderechelsea Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 Popeye comes to mind.. a very soft training sack comes to mine ..... :-P go home Ake .... don't do this to you and your family any more ....
Asashosakari Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 Didn't Akebono originally get his contract for 3 "high-profile" appearances as an added attraction? Taking part in the knock-out tournaments is pretty mundane K-1 stuff...I guess the organizers aren't exactly convinced of his drawing power anymore, either.
Kintamayama Posted July 17, 2004 Author Posted July 17, 2004 The guy that beat Akebono injured his leg in the process and couldn't go on. Till a while ago, in cases like these, the loser of the match would get an automatic by. But lately, they changed the rule and a "reserve fighter" is chosen. Still there was some confusion, and the stage announcer even announced Akebono would be in the semifinals. "Losing the way I did, it's difficult for me to change my mood and try again..", said Akebono. Someone else fought in the end.
Mark Buckton Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 His wife and his three kids were there. Yesterday he promised them the yusho. Ditto Aderechelsea - this hurts me even to read and am glad I went out for ramen and beer instead.
Otokonoyama Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 What has become of the Waimanalo strangler?! :-P
Stephanoshima Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 (edited) "I really wanted to attack, but he was running all over the place, so I couldn't use all the stuff I practiced" I am convinced he would have won... ...if he his opponent had been a not-too-high stack of roof tiles. "This powerful technique shatters 15 tiles in an instant using the Sunkei technique!" "...he lowered his stance, lifted his right arm and after a moment of concentration- "HNN!!" the former Grand Champion grunted and destroyed all 15 tiles in one motion!" http://www.so-net.ne.jp/feg/k-1gp/b04_0628.htm "Boards don't fight back." - Bruce Lee (Laughing...) "Neither do roof tiles." - Stephanoshima :-D Edited July 20, 2004 by Stephanoshima
sekihiryu Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I watched it and - Pathetic and embarassing are two words I would describe that fight and Chad as. Please leave K1 while you have shred af dignity left. :-P
