Asashosakari Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I don't even think that lack of killer instinct is an accurate assessment of Kisenosato. The guy has had plenty of "kills" in his career, the issue has been that he's not able to do it when the lights shine upon him the brightest, only when he's the underdog. But that part is at least debatable. However, the idea that Kise is being "forced" to do something he doesn't want to do...that actually made me laugh. The guy is the prototypical jock who lives and breathes sport, and even his only major hobby (watching American football) revolves around sport. He went into Ozumo a) against the wishes of his parents, and b) even though he reportedly had offers from some high schools with big-time baseball programs. (He was playing for 6 years in elementary and middle school, as both pitcher and catcher.) Heck, the guy made it to ozeki even though he apparently had basically no competitive experience with sumo or any other martial art before age 15, which makes him a huge outlier among the top Japanese of the last 20+ years. 8
Seijakuzan Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Tourette's...? Is this for real? I haven't noticed.. He does have a twitch, but to make a full diagnosis based on that reaches quite far... I don't know why there's such a stigma against it. The spectrum is very wide, and it usually does NOT involve the random outbursts of profanity like the movies would have you think. My brother has a mild case, and at its worst it was very similar to Kise's twitch. It's just an observation.

I know that Tourette's is, my point is that making a full psychological analysis of Kisenosato based on the twitch is a bit far reacing.
bettega Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 What if Kise's just not good enough to beat the Mongolians? What's the problem to be a close number 2 (or 4)?

I don't think so, lots of people have faces or gestures they make, Ama does a face. That twitch is usually when Kisenosato loses and he does a disappointed twitch, which to me is more like a shake of the head. I was at the basho a few days in May and I caught Toyonoshima doing some very interesting things as he sat by the dohyo, He closed his eyes and seemed to do some kind of ritual.
Asameshimae Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 As far as I can tell, Ksato only has the twitch when he is nervous. I have seen him out and about, talking to people and reporters etc. and he doesn't have the twitch at then that I can detect.
Benevolance Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 I'm not sure if this line of discussion is better or worse than the henka-not-a-henka topic we left. (In jonokuchi...) 4
Kurikara Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 What if Kise's just not good enough to beat the Mongolians? What's the problem to be a close number 2 (or 4)? Probably number 5 at this point but yeah, nothing wrong with that.

In junior high he was considerably larger than his peers and yup, the popular prototypical jock. <== (Laughing...) Edited October 15, 2015 by inhashi 6
inhashi Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) Most of them are from Twitter. The above are a part of my stash of pics I've collected over the years from Google search. Akinomaki has posted some great ways to find sumo related stuff on you tube that works for image search as well ===> link to thread. Edited October 15, 2015 by inhashi 2

word20 Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 can someone write in English what yoshikaze is saying in the video posted 16 september 04:00?
sekitori Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) With regard to the Kisenosato so-called twitch: >I think anything 'mental' with him is more neurological than psychological. Like I said before, the guy very obviously has Tourette or something similar - and it's much harder for people with those conditions to relax. I really enjoy reading medical diagnoses from people who have no medical training. Tourette Syndrome is very complex and can consist of many elements. The crucial thing is if this condition exists in everyday life as well as on the dohyo. If it only occurs during competition, in all likelihood it's nothing more than a nervous twitch which can be caused by the stress of the competition and the adrenaline rush which can accompany it. The athlete with probably the most famous twitch of all was the great basketball player, Elgin Baylor. On the court, his head was constantly twitching. It was almost as if he had a permanent head fake and it drove his opposition crazy. But as soon as the competition was over, there was no more twitching. I have a feeling that Kisenosato has a similar condition but since I'm not making any sort of diagnosis based on mere observation, I would never use the word "obviously" to describe it--as others have. >Unless someone can offer actual medical information (preferably information that is public or semi public knowledge and not confidential), let's not get carried away and invent all sorts of conditions for him, shall we? I couldn't agree more with that statement. :-) Edited October 22, 2015 by sekitori
