Fukurou Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Any comments in the press or from the man (or oyakata) about Hakuho's loss on day 1? I thought he was doing ok right until he was escorted out of the ring.
CT3* Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Good first day! Hakuho looked annoyed at the matta and then perhaps lost his focus. Good start for Okinoumi.
Shikona Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Okinoumi did a great Hakuho impression--a good grip, patience, and then when the opponent tries to improve his hold, take advantage and drive him out. Meanwhile, Hakuho, with the early pull attempt and arm around the neck, was channeling Goeido on a bad day. 3
WAKATAKE Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Not only that but a big payday for Okinoumi in the form of 50 kensho. More than makes up for it not being a kinboshi.
Kishinoyama Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Not only that but a big payday for Okinoumi in the form of 50 kensho. More than makes up for it not being a kinboshi. I think Okinoumi would rather have a kinboshi because it would be a whole lot more yen in the long run. :-)
ScottyJoyJrBebe Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Congrats to Okinoumi for a STUNNING and CONVINCING victory today!!! Nice to see Ichinojo is awake this time (So far) Lets go for 10 wins!! GO ICHINOJO!!! Tochiozan, lets go for 11 wins for a continued run for Ozeki. I have a feeling Osunaarashi is gonna bottom-out this tournament. 4-11 :( My prediction for Aki: Terunofuji 13-2-P Y Hakuho 13-2-P D Tochiozan 12-3 J Okinoumi 10-5 S Ichinojo 10-5 K (Yes, I realize this is VERY WISHFUL thinking) 2

I don't think that can mathematically happen unless Kakuryu, Kisenosato, Giku, and Goeido average 10-5 or 9-6 or something like that.

I will recant the 12-3 and the first 10-5, but I do believe that Ichinojo at M4e can pull off that 10-5 with <maybe> a fighting spirit award. I'm at least happy that it appears he has not put on any additional weight. Edit: YES, I do believe Terunofuji will get this one, even with the play-off I predict. Kasutera Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 What is more impressive about Okinoumi's win is that it's not a slip or last-minute throw that was catching Hak in a bad position on accident, Okinoumi had to fight and win to push him out. I hope Okinoumi benefits from the ego boost of a well-fought win against the Yokozuna, 2

Unfortunately, I still believe Osunaarashi will bottom out with 4-11 :( no recant there.
Akinomaki Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Over-trained with too much degeiko, said the press before the basho.
krindel Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Oh uh.. I have a feeling there is a chance of witnessing Hakuho's historical first bailout kyujo...
Andonishiki Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) the last time Hakuho lost the first two bouts was in Nov 2005 !!! He was a Komusubi, but still managed to finish 9-6. also stunning, that he NEVER lost to either Oki or Yoshi before - now 12-1 and 9-1. tomorrow the torikumi has Aoiyama (also 0-2) with a previous record of 12-0 for Hakuho. the unthinkable has just happened Edited September 14, 2015 by Andonishiki 1
gijo Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Nice basho this one as well!! Hakuho: it seems to be a "fighting spirit" problem, I do not see any evidence of injury at the moment. Ichinojo: still very heavy and lack of fighting strategy, no ideas as the last tournaments. I hope he will get better. Teru: calm, effective, a real yokozuna... Aminiski: he deserve a special price just to be there and keep winning. The yusho race, this time, will be open for Kise, if he can manage to keep his mind up till the end. I hope he will get what he deserve. 3
Pandaazuma Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Don't worry about Hak. Two losses are nothing! Would not be surprised if he went on and won it! Now there's a new challenge for him! 2
inhashi Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 It's that toe. Perhaps he's delirious from another infection. 😓
orandashoho Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Too early to tell if Hakuho can't pull this one. Maybe he likes the challenge of winning his way back up. Terunofuji is looking good and seems poised to make Hakuho regret his early losses. Aminishiki may get that special prize if he keeps this up. Never say "impossible"... look at Tenho's Yusho in 2012. This basho is promising to be very exciting.

monjos1280 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 All my faves - Endo, Okinoumi and Goeido - lost today :'-( keeping my fingers crossed tho ^^ I yelled at the PC screen when I saw Hakuho's second loss .. I thought what happened yesterday was only a temporary glitch in a system - looks like we are going to have to wait and see !!! Ichinojo - the giant sleepy teddy bear is back - as it was in Nagoya, he seems as if his body was there but his mind was somewhere else, again ... bless him. Terunofuji - cool as cucumber - his inner poise is scary! 1
Akinomaki Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) Kyujo from day 3 on is definite, according to the papers. The hospital found the left knee injured (in keiko before the basho) - he'll have an MRI in the morning. Miyagino-oyakata: "80% likely. I don't want him to unreasonably go on." "It seems he has pain just by bending the knee. That much pain mentioned by a man who never ever spoke of pain." The final decision is on the man himself.http://www.sankei.com/sports/news/150914/spo1509140036-n1.htmlhttp://www.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/sumo/20150914-OYT1T50080.html Edited September 14, 2015 by Akinomaki 1
Andonishiki Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) either HO goes kyujou or he wins tomorrow. another loss ??? NO WAY Edited September 14, 2015 by Andonishiki
Gurowake Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Now we just need to figure out a way to tie the other stories about Miyagino-beya into this one. Hmmm... 2

If it’s serious the Hakuhō era has just come to an end…
