New Ozeki Terunofuji has cellulitis. His right calf has swollen visibly, due to pus accumulating and did not take part in the heya training today. He is expected to rest for a week. He went for some IV drips at the local hospital. "It's no big deal so I'm fine. It was swollen lately..I will do my best to heal soon," he said. He has been doing 40 training bouts daily since the 13th.

the Ozeki promotion festivities were abundant lately. "He's not used to taking part in all these functions so he may have become a bit tired.." speculated Isegahama Oyakata. He wil be watching his situation and will act accordingly. There is a jungyo in Ishikawa on the 20th. "I'm not sure I will be able to train, but I think it will be OK," he said, hinting he will be there.

"Ozeki, who is that guy over there with the sunglasses and the dragon tattoos?"

"Don't know, but he sure look suspicious.."

Have there been any keiko reports on Kakuryu or Harumafuji? I am wondering whether we have any indications on their Nagoya basho participation.

Harumafuji was quoted as saying the usual "I will be back this basho with renewed vigor etc.. etc..'

Yokozuna Kakuryu appeared at sumo's provincial tour in Komatsu and showed steady improvement as he recovers from a left shoulder injury that sidelined him for two consecutive tournaments. Following a practice with maegashira Sadanoumi, the Mongolian yokozuna had a bout against ozeki Kisenosato. Despite losing the match, he had a look of satisfaction, saying, "I am responding physically."

Kakuryu said he feels no pain in his left shoulder. He said he will visit other stables to work out in preparing for the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, which kicks off on July 12. "I'm getting better each day. I look forward to having some tough workouts," Kakuryu said.

The provincial tour was put on to commemorate the launch of the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line.

After the surgery, Harumafuji is looking good. He had 16 bouts at his heya yesterday. He did go 2-4 against new Ozeki Terunofuji but was feeling good about the post-surgery feel of his right elbow. "I just have to go with serious keiko otherwise it's not good.. Great perspiration!!" he said. He did some hearty and noisy butsugari against new sanyaku Takarafuji. "I'm happy that we can mutually strengthen ourselves," said Harumafuji, referring to the rising stars Terunofuji, Takarafuji and himself.

New Ozeki Terunofuji is not happy with his condition. "I'm not happy with my condition," he said. When asked what he needs to strengthen, he answered: "Hmm, I have no idea..". It seems his engine isn't fine-tuned yet, said the reporter.

Yokozuna Kakuryuu is back and training diligently. He started training with sekitori for the first time in two months yesterday at the NIRK. He faced Yoshikaze and Juryo Shouhouzan, two height-challenged and super- quick rikishi. 14 bouts, won them all. "No biggie. I'd like to proceed to face some heavier rikishi soon," he said. He was mostly checking to see if movements that were painful for him before were Ok for him now. "I can do more but I am trying to avoid unnecessary damage so I'm just taking it a day at a time," he sort of said. "The atmosphere was great ( a lot of sekitori including Kisenosato and Kotoshougiku were there). Well, I guess I like sumo," he summed.

Kadoban Ozeki Kotoshougiku trained at his own Sadogatake beya today, facing Ichinojou and looking sharp. "I'm still in preparation mode but I've been able to move as I imagined, " he said. Since the end of last basho he has been doing suriashi with a 20 kilo stone for the first time in three years, trying to strengthen the lower part of his body, which was always regarded as his strong point. "Back then I was at my best. I will do my best so that there will be no regrets," he added.

Ozeki Kisenosato went to Oguruma beya for the NIRK today, his 29th birthday. "I can't take it slowly. I have to train and win and thus reward my fans," he said. He faced Yoshikaze and Takekaze, showed tsuki and oshi-20 bouts, won them all. "I felt good. I'm in good shape.Every day is fun!" he said. Regarding new Ozeki Terunofuji: "I have to face him without wavering. I lost the last time we met and if I don't beat him I won't be able to get the yusho.." he summed.

As I mentioned yesterday, it was Kisenosato's 29th birthday. "I feel like a middle aged man.. I hardly even go out at night anymore.." he lamented, as he caked.

The Oh No Dohyo- iri was held in pouring rain at the Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya today. All three Yokozuna performed a dohyo-iri and 4000 people came out to watch. The ceremony itself was moved inside the building because of the rain. "Well, it's starting soon, I'm saying to myself. It's a good basho for me usually so I hope to live up to the fans' hopes. I want to do sumo I won't regret.." said Harumafuji.

A lobster- reddish Hakuhou does the indoors deed:

Terunofuji trained at home today and had 39 bouts, winning 33. He faced Takarafuji and Homarefuji. "I'm in usual shape..Usual..," he said. Takarafuji on the other hand has been concentrating on doing "head sumo." "It's not easy.. I get raised quickly.." he complained. His Oyakata was giving him "advice" during the session. "If I don't get it right I won't be able to beat the Yokozunae and Ozekis.." he summed.

Kisenosato trained at the NIRK today and had 14 bouts against Kotoshougiku and Kakuryuu, winning 10 and looking good. He won his first 9 bouts, looking dead serious . " It's a week before the basho and I'm in better condition than I usually am at this stage. Having 14 bouts with Yokozuna/Ozeki is equal to having 40-50 bouts .. I will be concentrating on the final stretch.." he explained.

First, rikishi study at Naruto. Now Hakuho has eaten the gomu gomu fruit. Will the mango/sumo crossovers ever end?

Yokozuna Kakuryuu has formally announced that he will be entering Nagoya after missing the last two basho due to injury. "My left shoulder is 95% healed. Even if it is a bit painful, I will be entering. My aim is to get double-digit wins, but the best thing would be winning the yusho.." he said.

Yesterday he trained at the NIRK, facing Ozekis Kisenosato and Kotoshougiku for 16 bouts, going 9-7.

Preparations are getting serious as we near the basho. 4 of the top rikishi met on the dohyo today at Tagonoura beya: Hakuhou, Harumafuji, Kisenosato and Terunofuji. No bouts between them but sanbangeiko (where you face the same rival consecutive times) was held between Hakuhou and Kisenosato. They had 15 bouts in all. "I lost to him last basho, so I came all the way here to face him.." said Hakuhou. It's been a year and a half since they last trained together. When migiyotsu was taken, Hakuhou won. Hidariyotsu - Kisenosato. Some fierce bouts that ended outside the dohyo were witnessed. Hakuhou won 8-7 in the end. "It was good keiko. From here on I'll go at it with all I have!!" declared Hakuhou. "Now that he's joining the fray it's going to be really exciting.. Everyone is expecting it.." said Hakuhou of new Ozeki Terunofuji.

Kisenosato only faced Hakuhou and looked good. "I wanted to face Terunofuji as well but my body wouldn't let me..You can't beat the Yokozuna with half-heated sumo. But I'd like tol face him with a lot of confidence!!" said Kisenosato
