Akinomaki Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 The Hochi shimbun professional sports big award(s) (a bit smaller than the Japan pro sports big awards) best freshman of the year (in ALL sports) award will go to Ichinojo, first time (established in 2009) that the winner comes from sumo. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20141209-OHT1T50237.html 3
Akinomaki Posted December 13, 2014 Author Posted December 13, 2014 Ichinojo also is in this years "kawari hagoita" (yearly changing battledore), as one of the most impressive persons of the yearhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYcLRPz8OaY 2
Akinomaki Posted December 14, 2014 Author Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) At his sekiwake promotion party Ichinojjo named ozeki as his goal for next year (some papers add first yusho).4 new koenkai all over the country are planned, befitting a future yokozuna: the head of the Minato-beya koenkai said "We have to create koenkai(s) one is not ashamed of also if he becomes yokozuna."Ichinojjo will get a new kesho-mawashi from his koenkai with the Osaka castle as the design for the Osaka basho in March, with the expectation: getting double digits in January and getting the crown in Osaka to grab the ozeki rank. Akinomaki Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 The biggest adversary for Ichinojo may be the sweets, he can't win against the urge to eat them. He thinks he has more than 200kg now (afraid to use the scales, at the heya only until 200 can be measured anyway) and names 185-190 kg as his ideal weight. The oyakata thinks 300kg scales may be necessary, but urges him to do more keiko to cover for the eating.http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2014/12/16/kiji/K20141216009469300.htmlOn the death anniversary of Futabayama he went for degeiko to Tokitsukaze-beya and with the portrait of Futabayama at the training ground was 21-1 against juryo Tokitenku (9-1) and Sotairyu (4-0) etc, especially training the tachi-ai, his weak point.http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20141217/sum14121705020002-n1.htmlHe will change to a Chiyonofuji-style black shimekomi (mawashi for the basho) for the 15 days of the Hatsu basho (like Asashoryu and Harumafuji).http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2014/12/16/kiji/K20141216009466000.html 4

Akinomaki Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 Ichinojo was appointed old-home-ambassador for Tottori prefecture, his second home - he went to the Totttori Johoku high school. 2
Akinomaki Posted December 22, 2014 Author Posted December 22, 2014 Not surprisingly, Ichinojo is also best newcomer of the year (in all pro sports) at the Japan pro sports award. Hakuho like last year gets one of the shukun-sho - he had hoped for the grand award and goes for it again next year (NHK news9). 3

Gurowake Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 There comes a time when it makes no sense to award a prize to someone who has won it the last 6 years and is the clear choice for the current year. Unless there's a sponsor providing prize money regardless, there's not much point in being yet another publisher that recognizes Hakuho as the top rikishi of the year yet again.
Hakuhonofan Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) The Hochi pro sports award sumo category seems to have been dropped, it is not on the list for this year. Or not awarded because Ichinojo got the freshman award? Other sports aren't treated like that, one more award Hakuho is deprived of this year? Doesn't look like it. At 57th Hochi Award, Hakuho won for the 8th consecutive years as the best Sumo wrestler of the year, beating Choyonofuji's and Taiho's record ( 7 each). Winning his 32nd Emperor Cup was the feat that made him elected unanimously. Edited December 26, 2014 by Hakuhonofan 1

That are 2 different Hochi awards, most wins automatically makes the winner of that one. Hochi pro sports award past winners are at http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/報知プロスポーツ大賞 Hakuho only won it 4 times, 2009 also had no sumo award. Most wins of the year award: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/年間最多勝 Hochi best rikishi award: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/年間最優秀力士賞 Both started nearly at the same time. Edit: I think we are used to masses of awards in sumo, both for a basho yusho and for year-end awards. Edited December 26, 2014 by Akinomaki 1
