Sumozumo Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Well, according to reports Homarenishiki has lost some 20 kg since debuting... And you could just as well make the opposite argument that his opponents should be the ones with the problem, since they face 196 cm tall rikishi so rarely. The overall package is what matters, not singular attributes. And the fact of the matter is that Tsukimoto is almost certainly at least upper-mid sandanme level, Kiribayama low sandanme and Asanoshima upper-mid jonidan. He's going to meet easier opponents next time. (I forgot about Iwagami though, that makes two jonokuchi-caliber opponents.) If he lost 20kg then that would be explanation enough. After you get used to Japanese food its easy to forget that someone who is getting new exposure to the diet might find it hard to keep weight during intense training. When I first started taking business trips there I found it hard to choke some meals down, but now I could easily see myself gaining 5kg a month by going to a rotary sushi every other night... Here's to him putting some weight back on and as muscle too :)
teo_heel Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 This was his second day in Japan. Hm, thanks for that... Konishiki showed some secrets of good tsuppari sumo. Very interesting. 1
WAKATAKE Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Konishiki's looking good these days, glad to see he's taken an interest in the kid.
d_golem Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Brodik does look like he lost weight and muscle mass comparing the videos of his recent bouts to the Konishiki one.
teo_heel Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 Brodik does look like he lost weight and muscle mass comparing the videos of his recent bouts to the Konishiki one. Read what Nishinoshima wrote. He lost 30 kg before this basho. 1

He lost 30 kg before this basho. I did. I just remarked that the videos do confirm what Nishinoshima wrote. Brodik's skin looked a bit gaunt in his bout vids whereas it was taut in the Konishiki vid.

OK... Yeah... he will rebuild his body... he should do this thing or he will be so powerless...
bettega Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 The reason for the tachi-ai difference between what he did in amateur sumo and now is that once he joined the oyakata decided there had to be a complete breakdown and reconstruction of his sumo. Watch his matches in the US open. He basically just took his opponent's full charge each time and relied and brute power and judo skills to leverage them out. While that would work for a time in ozumo it's generally of limited effectiveness at the highest levels. It also means the possibility of injury increases dramatically. The discussion with the boss involved Kotooshu and Baruto and the potential that they lost to blown out knees. The citation of Baruto warms my heart
Jakusotsu Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Day 12, Homarenishiki vs YamatoarashiWho was that $§*!&? taking a flash photo right before the tachiai?!
orandashoho Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Why is he standing so far back from the line? That way, he is unnecessarily losing ground during a fast attack.
bettega Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 I hope him the best but right now he's clueless. :-|
orandashoho Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Well, he has to unlearn and relearn. What has worked in amasumo won't work here if you aspire to reach the top. So he has a way to go -- but he has time and so far he seems to be a quick learner. I think he may become a force to reckon with, not only worth watching, but also interesting to see how he grows into his own style of sumo. Please, let the videos of his bouts continue!
Jakusotsu Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 One of the first thing he has to unlearn is his awkward stance which would only serve him well in bowling.
Odium Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 I am confident he will learn a lot and become better. I only wish I had the guts to do the same thing when I was younger... Best to him.
Katooshu Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Got his KK! Still has a long, long way to go but at least he's off to a winning start. Edited July 25, 2015 by Kotooshu's Revenge
Asashosakari Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 (edited) Today's bout: Edited July 25, 2015 by Asashosakari 1
Jakusotsu Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Still bowing to the wrong side, I see. Are his peers even paying attention? 1
WAKATAKE Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 The person who should be making it known to him should be Nishikido. If HE doesn't know about that then the judging department should at least be sending him a memo.
Asashosakari Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 In fairness, he was competing from the other side this time... 2
word20 Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 I like todays bout. It would be good if we could see some more interesting bouts from the bashos. In may it was interesting seeing day 14 for about two last hours live. There really is exciting matches in sumo.

kosomo Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 I think he killed him, haha. Tachiai is wayyyy better than last time.
WAKATAKE Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 He's been able to get a whole two months of training in, so it's all working out it seems. Good job for him, hopefully he can pick things up from here.
