Kintamayama Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I developed all my methods myself. No one offered me help at all, even though I said I probably needed it. I'm happy that I can get video recording capabilities that don't result in craptastic clips given the age of my computer and my knowledge of the field. As much as I know sound is nice to have, I've done everything I can think of with the setup I have now. I'm using CamStudio to record off the screen (Usteam video in Firefox), and using Windows crappy-can't-change-defaults Movie Maker to compile the clips. If there's a better way, I wouldn't know because no one bothered to give me any suggestions. I can't help you much since I'm simply recording a stream, not the Kyokai's, that starts with Juryo in the best case scenario.. The Kyokai's new stream essentially should have a URL that can be recorded by VLC just like the unpaid one had, no? I have no idea. As for Movie Maker, I respectfully disagree-I tried many others but for what we need here, it's excellent. It's what I use. Very intuitive and compact with quite a few cool effects. Personally, the fact that you are capturing a screen doesn't bother me at all, as the original quality isn't worth going nuts for. As for the volume, it's a Windows issue. Someone that knows the sound tricks should find a solution.
Kintamayama Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) For sound, here are a few tips-tried it and worked for me on Windows 7, although I personally am recording through VLC as my stream does have a backdoor URL. http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/kb/1315.html Edited September 15, 2014 by Kintamayama
Gurowake Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) I developed all my methods myself. No one offered me help at all, even though I said I probably needed it. Somewhere else a few days ago I said: "Don't hesitate to ask." I didn't know what to ask about, and everything in terms of video I managed to do much better than I anticipated. Audio I know people would like, but I followed the steps in the recorder's documentation about sound not working and it said at one point "if that option isn't available for you, contact your manufacturer for help," and so when that indeed happened, I just assumed it was something too complex for me to deal with in the time I had available. That option is not available to me. Yes, I did "show disabled devices". I think it's a sound card issue; if I get some time I might look into getting new drivers for it, but it's well down on my priority list. Edited September 15, 2014 by Gurowake
Gurowake Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 As to WMM, I just find it frustrating that I can't save my preferences for the captions or pretty much anything else. It does work extremely well and is quite intuitive, but that limitation makes it feel to me like a bare-bones kind of program. I do appreciate all the built in tools, but I just don't like their default settings and would prefer that I not have to change them every time (or just accept them because I can't be bothered to change them every time).
Asashosakari Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) Day 1 bouts tagged for the DB now. (Except makuuchi, as I'm not sure I want to tempt the copyright police that much.) Anybody else wishing to help out, please do, as I may not get to watch/tag every clip this basho. Edited September 15, 2014 by Asashosakari 4
Randomitsuki Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 A really spectacular utchari can be found on Gurowake's first video of day 2, starting at around 3:18 (Komatsu vs. Ogiryu). 1
Gurowake Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 That utchari seemed like it should have been called some sort of backward body drop, perhaps shumokuzori. I was quite surprised when I heard the kimarite call, expecting it to be something far more exotic that I'd have to look up. It was quite a spectacular move though. There's also a really nice leg pick in the first video around 6:40. 1

You can't save caption preferences in ANY software, which is really annoying. At least it remembers your last caption as long as you don't close the software. The really expensive ones don't even do that.. That's the main reason I'm sticking with WMM.
Gurowake Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 (edited) I managed to get new drivers for my sound card, but it didn't seem to help. Then I used google and found a silly way: get a audio connector and connect the speaker to the microphone, since the recorder has no problem recording off microphones. The problem with this is that I have to switch between default output devices every time I want to go from recording to listening. Edited September 15, 2014 by Gurowake

Real pro experts share their insights... :D I managed to get new drivers for my sound card, but it didn't seem to help. "Klick 'Start' to stop the System"... Like that. Everybody should know. ;) Anyway... If nothing helps, it's a completely proper way to re-capture the output to a second monitor through a video device...

Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 The actual solution was stupider (although I assume it only worked because I updated the sound card driver): plug in actual speakers (I typically use a USB headset so people around me don't get annoyed by and/or interested in what I'm listening to). Apparently the sound card won't send data to Stereo Out unless there are speakers actually plugged in. So it works fine; I just have to explain what I'm doing to everyone else now.
Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 There are 16 non-sekitori matches (out of 136) on day 3 between those that won their opening match. Why not have all losers if they're going to be that lopsided? Also, I didn't know before watching excessive amounts of lower divisions live that they alternate days announcing (by both Gyoji, Yobidashi, and PA guy) east and west first, much as how they rotate between which Yokozuna/Ozeki/etc of equal rank has their match last.
Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) Youtube in read-only mode right now. Part 4 was uploaded but won't publish. I finished recording part 5 and hopefully by the time I caption it Youtube will recover. Here are the first 3 parts of Day 3: Edited September 16, 2014 by Gurowake 6
Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 My internal control over the process of captioning apparently has a flaw, as one match in the first video had the wrong caption, the same as the first match's due to how I create and edit the first one and once done copy it to all the others to create them and in the process keep the same window size and settings. The process is set up to ensure a very low probability that I ever paste the wrong caption into a match, but there's no mechanism to prevent me from skipping a match when pasting in the correct text thereby leaving in the wrong text. Given that I only noticed because I randomly checked the link for that match after I tagged the first video in the database, I'm a little paranoid there are more mistakes out there.
Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 And now that I have sound, I can record the mono-ii explanation for the Umetsu vs. Chiyonokatsu match that had me completely boggled yesterday; hopefully someone who actually knows Japanese can explain this one to me.
ALAKTORN Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) He just says Umetsu stepped outside before the heel of Chiyonokatsu was out. I’m not sure how they reached that conclusion, though… would need a better camera angle. Edited September 16, 2014 by ALAKTORN
Gurowake Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 Ok, looking at it closely, Umetsu does step forward out before Chiyonokatsu lands, but that happens all the time when people get pushed out; there's stuff about superior position and I've read that carrying your opponent off the ground and stepping out of the ring before setting him down is still a win for you assuming you're in control. It's perhaps a little more borderline in this case than in most, and they probably had a nice little discussion about it. I could see a rematch being called, but it seems insane to give Umetsu a loss for that. 1
Yasashiryu Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Yeah, very one sided perspective, doesn't make much sense considering you see this happen all the time on the higher division.

Well, one solution would be to start recording when the Kyokai displays the shikona on screen before each match (or the yobidashi yell their names) - but then again the compilations would get longer and longer. Once again, your daily compilations are perfect as they are. In combination with chromecast it is even a cinemascopic experience!
Kintamayama Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) Maezumo today, thanks to Gurowake. 43.5 year old Hokutoryuu who joined sumo in 1986 (28 years in Sumo??) had his mae-zumo bout today. This has got to be a record, no? A 43 year old in Maezumo? He has not gone higher than Jonidan since July 1995- 20 years in Jonidan/Jonokuchi. Second bout here. And in the last bout, you can see the new 18 year old beast from Takanohana beya, Satou . Edited September 16, 2014 by Kintamayama 1
