Naganoyama Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 I have added a new section showing all makuuchi yusho winners from 1909. Yusho portraits are shown where available - i.e. for about half of the yusho in the 1950s and for all yusho from the 1960s onwards (except for the portrait for the latest basho which will be added in due course). Choose "Special Categories" from the top menu and then "Makuuchi yusho by year" from the left menu. 1 11

This project is very important as a piece of historical documentation, and I thank you for taking it on. [There's still some work to be done: several mismatches between names and portraits.]
Naganoyama Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 If you've spotted errors then I'm always grateful if you can send me a reference. I did check it all but got a bit goggle eyed towards the end. How about a pm?
Naganoyama Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 Clicking on the shikona now takes you to the rikishi page at SumoReference. I don't know why I forgot to do this before... 1 3

Naganoyama Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 It would be if you did it manually. Also there would be lots of mistakes. I do it in software for both the above reasons and it took about 10 minutes, of which about 8 were uploading and testing. To be fair I have created quite a few pages with similar links to rikishi and so it was only a single line of code that needed to be added.
Naganoyama Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 I have added a new view based on the same data. It shows a list of all the rikishi who have won makuuchi yusho and when you click on a name you see only the yusho won by that rikishi. Choose "Special Categories" from the top menu and then "Makuuchi yusho by rikishi" from the left menu. 1 3
Naganoyama Posted December 7, 2020 Author Posted December 7, 2020 The section on foreigners now has some additional categories to show rikishi of mixed ancestry and rikishi whose shusshin does not match their country of birth. Choose "Special Categories" from the top menu. As the "Foreigners" section is the default, this will now be visible. From the "Countries" list at the top, choose any of the four categories at the end (in blue). These are shown below: Foreign shusshin mixed-ancestry rikishi Foreign-born rikishi with foreign (other) shusshin Japan shusshin mixed-ancestry rikishi Japan shusshin foreign-born rikishi 2 9

Naganoyama Posted February 12, 2021 Author Posted February 12, 2021 I have now updated the site to reflect the 2021 year book. 1 17
Naganoyama Posted February 23, 2022 Author Posted February 23, 2022 I have now updated the site to reflect the 2022 year book. Last year, in spite of the pandemic, all rikishi pictures were updated in the yearbook. This was almost certainly because the pictures had already been taken before the state of emergency was declared. Most urakata pictures were just repeated from the previous year. This year there has clearly been a protocol in place that dictated that only essential rikishi/urakata pictures would be updated. Only rikishi appearing in their first yearbook or whose hair style/length had changed significantly was snapped. Only new urakata pictures were updated. Below are a few examples. There are more to be found. Nishihara (first yearbook): Miyata (longer hair but no topknot): Yamane (first topknot): Ichiyamamoto (mage->oicho): And Shishi (who barely qualifies under the above rule, but only if you take out the word 'significantly'): Magaki Oyakata: Tokoyama Tokotochi: 2 5
yohcun Posted February 23, 2022 Posted February 23, 2022 (edited) Minor error with Chiyotsurugi, but thank you very much as always. Edited February 24, 2022 by yohcun 2
Katooshu Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 Maybe it's just the haircut making him look older 1
Naganoyama Posted April 2, 2022 Author Posted April 2, 2022 Grrr. The ISP put me in a position where I was forced to let them migrate my hosting to a new server. They have now twice messed up my DNS settings for the new server and the site has been down for five days already. 4
Naganoyama Posted April 4, 2022 Author Posted April 4, 2022 Although you can still not reach the site via the subdomain heyaaz.nagioff.com, you can now at least get there via http://nagioff.com/heyaaz. 2 2
Naganoyama Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Sumo A-Z now visible again after 8 days downtime. 3 2
Naganoyama Posted February 7, 2023 Author Posted February 7, 2023 I have now updated Sumo A-Z to reflect the 2023 year book. I have added a section 'Saitama Sakae Alumni' accessible via Special Categories. Why would anyone want/need this? No idea. 1 9
since_94 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I use your website whenever I am around the Kokugikan and want to try to identify a rikishi (whether retired or lower division). It has proved to be a very useful resource so I want to thank @Naganoyamafor creating and maintaining it. 3
Naganoyama Posted February 16, 2024 Author Posted February 16, 2024 I have now updated Sumo A-Z to reflect the 2024 year book. 3 10
Naganoyama Posted May 22, 2024 Author Posted May 22, 2024 (By complete coincidence given it has just been mentioned elsewhere) I have added a section 'Shunjuen Incident' accessible via Special Categories. 2
Naganoyama Posted June 6, 2024 Author Posted June 6, 2024 You can now access past editions of the yearbook via a menu at the bottom of the page. I have got back to 2020 so far and will gradually add earlier years. The aim is to get back to 2000. 8 4
Naganoyama Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Past editions of the yearbook are now available back to 2013. I was hoping to be able to say "Look how young Tamawashi looks!" but of course he hardly looks much different then from how he looks now. Is he a vampire? 2 4

Crazy to see that Oitekaze had zero sekitori back then.
