I was hoping to be able to say "Look how young Tamawashi looks!" but of course he hardly looks much different then from how he looks now. Is he a vampire? He was fitted with regenerative braking when they built him, but the mechanism is getting a bit worn now. That's why Kataonami has had to recruit more deshi lately so he has more resistance to push against. 1
aderechelsea Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 This is another gem of a thread that i missed for mysterious reasons. Naganoyama .... you are a legend 2

It is definitely a mystery. You disappear mysteriously, stay away for an age of the world (was there global warming when you were last here?) and then reappear as if nothing had happened. You are definitely very welcome back. (A silversmith eh?)
Naganoyama Posted August 15, 2024 Author Posted August 15, 2024 (edited) In working my way back through previous yearbooks I have very much enjoyed seeing guys who are no longer with us. These include moto-Terao and moto-Chiyonofuji who were particular favourites of mine back in the day and Kitanoumi, probably the most unremittingly serious man on the planet. Having just been working on 2011 I was rather less pleased to see those tied up in the match-fixing scandal. (I make an exception for Sokokurai who was innocent and whose inclusion in the group and the knock-on effect on his oyakata is an aberration.) So much for the long-winded asides. I have added a section for the match-fixing scandal of 2011, accessible via the Special Categories link at the bottom of the page. It shows both the rikishi involved and the oyakata they took down with them. PS if anyone has kesho-mawashi pictures for Hoshihikari, Hoshikaze, Kirinowaka, Kyokunankai and Shirononami, I will happily replace the existing pictures. Edited August 15, 2024 by Naganoyama 3

You know ... life .... out of the kitchens and into jewelry making with my partner. Been around sumo for the most part as a quiet spectator. happy to be back. I am a bit older and sometimes grumpier. Humor is still alive and kicking. 1
Naganoyama Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 I have now posted 2010. It is Asashoryu's last yearbook appearance. He wins the yusho in January and is then sacked for drunkenly beating someone. The fire in his belly which drives his sumo finally consumes him.
Naganoyama Posted October 13, 2024 Author Posted October 13, 2024 The yearbooks are now available back to 2008. 6
Naganoyama Posted October 13, 2024 Author Posted October 13, 2024 I have added two new (related) sections showing rikishi who attended university. They are: - 'University rikishi (by heya)' showing sub- lists of rikishi grouped by heya. -'University rikishi (by university)' showing sub-lists of rikishi grouped by university. All sub-lists are subdivided into sekitori and non-sekitori. Both sections have a link to an A-Z list also subdivided into sekitori and non-sekitori. These lists are accessed via the "Special categories" link at the bottom right-hand side of the page. 6 5
Naganoyama Posted February 1 Author Posted February 1 The yearbooks are now available back to 2001. 2 1
Naganoyama Posted February 1 Author Posted February 1 The 2025 yearbook is now available. The pandemic restrictions have finally been lifted and virtually everybody has a new picture. The result is that there is a greater degree of ageing visible than usual (more fat around the chin and neck for rikishi and thinner hair for urakata). 2 3
rokudenashi Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Thank you for your work on this. While it's undoubtedly a great reference, I often find myself just browsing it for pleasure. On a side note, it looks like Wakamotoharu was up all night partying before the photoshoot - or the tokoyama was drunk 1 4
Asashosakari Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Barely survived defending a village full of women and children, perhaps. 2 4
Naganoyama Posted February 20 Author Posted February 20 The yearbooks are now available back to 2000. 2 3
Naganoyama Posted February 20 Author Posted February 20 For 2025 only as yet: I have added Japanese to the headline rikishi/urakata names. The Romanised version of the rikishi name links to the rikishi's English-language page at Sumo DB as before. The Japanese version links to the rikishi's Japanese-language page. This is also true for former rikishi names of oyakata/wakaimonogashira/sewanin. Other years, debut, intai and special category pages to follow. 1 5
Naganoyama Posted October 9 Author Posted October 9 Japanese names have now been added throughout. Kabu pages now link to Sumo DB. Two new pages have been added to the Special Categories section Sekitori brothers Sekitori fathers and sons Also the Brothers page now shows the brothers in the order elder/younger. 2 4
RussReimroc Posted October 10 Posted October 10 Hey Naganoyama, I noticed while browsing the "mixed-ancestry rikishi with Japanese shusshin" section that Ikazuchido Neri is missing from this section. His shusshin is Saitama, but he is of Japanese-Nigerian descent(Japanese mother, Nigerian father). Thought I might let you know! Thanks for everything you do 1
Ripe Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Just noticed while browsing that in Summary there is no mention of Isegahama takeover under "Heya changes in 2025" page. I'd consider it something you haven't got to change so far if not for already added changes to Otake... 1
Naganoyama Posted October 17 Author Posted October 17 A new page has been added to the Special Categories section: Ozeki of the modern era 1 1
Naganoyama Posted November 26 Author Posted November 26 Two new pages have been added to the Special Categories section: Sansho by rikishi Sansho by year 2 3
Naganoyama Posted November 29 Author Posted November 29 Three new pages have been added to the Special Categories section: Kinboshi by rikishi Kinboshi by year Kinboshi by yokozuna 1 2
Naganoyama Posted Thursday at 12:50 Author Posted Thursday at 12:50 A Statistics page has been added to the Special Categories section. At present it comprises summary lists of rikishi totals of numbers of yusho, sansho and kinboshi (both for the winning rikishi and the defeated yokozuna) sorted in descending order. Active rikishi are highlighted. In addition to the usual English/Japanese links to the rikishi at Sumo Reference, clicking on the number column shows the yusho, sansho or kinboshi broken out for the selected rikishi. 2 1
