If I find the time, I'll post the TV ratings for Natsu later - for this basho I'll post them as I notice them to be sure. Complete sell-out for Nagoya is ensured of course (7580 spectators).

The Natsu basho had 4 days with 17%, Haru 10 days, this basho none. The Kansai people lost interest in the 1st week, I'll add the 2nd week data later.

All days sell-out again - but if the kyujo carnage like this basho continues, it may lead to the end of the current sumo boom.

The TV ratings for Kansai for the last week will appear on Saturday, I'll add them later. They will likely be high: Goeido is much more popular than some people may think. The ratings reflect this - last basho started with high interest and got boring for the Japanese people in the end, and while this basho started with no expectations,  Goeido by leading the yusho race fired them up and brought the last 9 days into the top 20.

I wouldn't be surprised either - but perhaps for not the same reason.  Neyagawa's new favourite son was kyujo by day 3, so they may have simply fallen back on their next best ('best' as in popularity, not rank) remaining local boy when it looked like he had a shot at the yusho.

Ura leading the yusho race on day 15 would mean a challenge to Chiyonofuji's all time rating record

Advance sales for Kyushu have started this morning - the pre-advance sales lottery as always already happened during last basho. And we don't have immediate sell-out this time, only 6 days were sold out at once. Last year we hadn't even seen all days a full house in Kyushu, only on 13 days. Sales are good enough to expect 15 days of full house and now 8 days are sold out. With all 4 yokozuna at the basho, the chances for a complete sell-out are getting better - should Ura enter, I'm sure there'd be one

Hello Akinomaki-san :)

I was wondering if you have a historical time series in a spreadsheet regarding the attendance. I am an economist and, you know, I love to make plots and analysis. I can, of course, go through the seven pages here looking for the tables (not a problem at all). But maybe you have been collecting it systematically. Is there any kind of official database where I could find this and more data about (our beloved) sumo(u)?

Official now-all 15 days are sold out. First time in 21 years that the whole year (90 days) is sold out. Well, days 2-5 and day 10 are 90 percent gone but the Kyokai sees fit to say that anyway. The man-in banner comes down at 80 percent, so it will be down every day. "Our aim is a daily fudadome (total sell-out, not to be confused with a TokyoDome, which is something completely different). I'd like to see as many fans as possible," said jungyo boss Sakaigawa Oyakata. That being said , a daily allotment of 200 same- day tickets will be put aside. Kyushu has not seen a full house for all days since 1996. Last year - 13 days.

I'm collecting all Japanese online papers' sumo articles systematically (again since 2012  - I'm collecting them since 1997, but with big holes in my collection) - and everything I extract from there I systematically post to the forum - but otherwise I have no database. And I haven't seen any data collection on the net of those data elsewhere. The NSK keeps the official data, but maybe only as: full-house: no/simply/sell-out.  Maybe the papers keep their own databases, especially sanspo, my sole source for each day's attendance data.

I am happy that sumo is popular again. But I'm also sad because the Fukuoka tournament was my favorite tournament to attend because of its modest attendance; it was very nice being able to walk up on the day-of and buy box seats in the morning. The weekends were still impossible to get boxes, but the 10 weekdays were a breeze.

And even for day 1 there were special set tickets left - if you chose to rent and change into a kimono for wasou day

And sales went that good till now at the pretence that 4 yokozuna are entering. If Kise cancels his entry as well (it's quite likely), it's most certain that the remaining tickets won't get sold and it will simply be a 15 days of full-house, but not a complete sell-out. Then to get tickets for the day won't need a line-up at 5a.m. either.

Confirmed that all 15 days will be full-houses - in Fukuoka that is: 80% or more sold. The days with advance tickets left are days 3 to 5, and there 90% have been sold. The basho had full houses all day, making it a year of all 90 days a full house. And only 45 seats remained unsold this year: on day 3 this basho, all other 14 days had the full capacity of 6986 sold out - and thus we have a year of 89 days sell-out.

The TV ratings were better than for Aki - all days were ranked in the top 30 again, though the last day just barely, quite a drop of interest by the viewers - they rather went to look shoten. Day 10 with Kisenosato going kyujo saw a drop by 2.3 points from the day before.

This year's day 1 ratings started with 15.4% and then jumped to 17.6% with new yokozuna Kisenosato, Natsu back to 15.3%, Nagoya 14.5% and last basho a slump with 3 yokozuna kyujo from the start- 11.9% - this basho with 15.2% is again a normal sumo boom result.

Next year starts again with a sell-out for the Hatsu-basho -  in 4.5 hours - the record is 50min for Aki, Natsu was gone in 1.5h. The sumo boom wasn't hurt that much so far by the scandal.

Day 1 was 3rd with 17.6%, same percentage as day 1 of the first basho with new yokozuna Kisenosato - Haru last year. The other basho last year had about 15% for day 1, with kyujo Aki just 11.9%.

The last hiramaku yusho by Kyokutenho (ketteisen vs. Tochiozan on the last day) had 20.4% for day 15, Natsu 2012. The other  European yusho had 20.5% for Kototoshu on day 14, Natsu 2008, and 19.5% for Baruto on day 15 for a yusho on day 13, Hatsu 2012. The first yusho of the Japanese ozeki recently were 24% for Kotoshogiku as the first after a looong time for a Japan bred yusho (day 15, Hatsu 2016), Goeido 19.7% Aki 2016, day 14 and Kisenosato 21.5%, Hatsu 2017 day 15. But the most in recent years for his first yusho had Harumafuji: 25.7%, yusho ketteisen against Hakuho, Natsu 2009. Looks like enough scandals has affected ticket sales. As of 10PM Sunday February 4 Japan time, tickets for weekdays for the Haru basho were still available. Should there still be tickets available after February 5, the ticket window at Edion will open up.

All days sell-out of course so far. The TV ratings for day 1 of the Osaka basho were 13.7% for the Kanto region, now less again than Shoten, which is aired at the same time. The TV ratings for the first week - 2nd half of makuuchi. I'll add the Kansai data later. It's annoying to have a TV drama Aibo 相棒 on the list - even easier to confuse with sumo 相撲 than Sagami(hara) 相模(原).

Also last basho had scandals and Kakuryu later on was the sole yokozuna, but the rankings stayed in the 16-18% range, while this basho it's just a 12-15% range. http://www.sankei.com/entertainments/news/180321/ent1803210001-n1.html
