Maybe also people didn't want to watch sumo without a crowd? We must agree that atmosphere is completely different with or without crowd. As far as I'm concerned I like it almost the same, other parameters (hearing everything that happens, something different, new...) compensating the lack of crowd (cheers, screams, laughs...). There can be a percentage of people though who might not like to watch sumo in an empty arena thus explaining lower ratings? Just a thought.

I wouldn't read too much into percentages. If the number of total viewers was higher, a lesser percentage still can stand for a plus.

Excellent point. Sumo probably has a pretty steady ceiling of viewers and having more kids and younger people at home probably dilutes that from a percentage point. 
 

I admit I don’t know particularly how to read the tv ratings, but I’d be interested to see how absolute numbers for January and March compared. My instinct tells me percentage and ranking drop but we should still see total viewership increase with more people stuck at home. 
 

Having said that, since there was no scandal or major retirement since January it’s hard to see why ratings would drop materially other than people were focused on things other than sport in general.

Unfortunately, the japanese don't appear to post what americans would call 'ratings' anywhere, only 'share'.  Not at all clear why.

Day 15 is the only day to be officially sold out - but at the moment 59 chair seat tickets are on resale.

Some rare tickets went on sale from day 3 on - the real VIP box seats https://syphotoblog.com/2017/01/09/hello-world/2/ - I never have seen them on sale on the net, and unlike in the best masu seats, I got angry looks when I sat in one in empty time. On top of the first floor:

Day 14 can still become the first day to be sold out with the 2500 limit - only a few chair seats left. That there are none at the resale anymore indicates that this closes one day early - it was reported that the official tickets are on sale until 17h on the day itself.

Day 15 is officially sold out for a while now, but even masu B seats have returned to the resale - 7 masu seats and 48 chair seats (A included) are still available at the moment.

In the end, all day 15 resale tickets were sold, so senshuraku alone can be said to have had the limit of 2500 tickets sold - how may were in the hall at peak is another story. No data were published after the estimate for day 1 of about 2000.

The TV ratings for July 20, 2nd half of makuuchi. The usual Sankei sources have stopped to publish the rankings, Asahi is partially behind the paywall and has to be retrieved in chunks. I also used available info from the original source, Video Research: the top 10 sports program ratings - "early" is end of juryo and/or 1st half of makuuchi, now also with average and peak number of (million) viewers.

This time the last 2 days had the whole contingent sold to have at most 2500 in the hall, but again only the last day appeared to really be full. The first 4 rows of the masu-seki boxes were not on sale, to have the iji-in sit there. They always sit closest to dohyo, but usually much closer, on the tamari-seki.

The TV ratings for Aki 2020, 2nd half of makuuchi in the top 20 of Kanto (Asahi) and Kansai (blog), plus data from Video research, also from the 1st half and/or juryo (early): since the start of this fiscal year, they also have actual average and peak viewer figures in total of all of Japan's 32 broadcast areas, a week later than the other data. I changed my format accordingly and updated also last basho with it, shown as million viewers.

With the limit of 5000 persons per day, only day 15 was officially sold-out, but resale tickets were available till the just before that day. No attendance figures were reported since the approximate one from day 1 of the July basho.
The TV ratings for November 2020, 2nd half of makuuchi in the top 20 of Kanto (Asahi) and Kansai (blog), plus data from Video research, with a bit from the 1st half and/or juryo (early), and also total actual average and peak viewer figures from all of Japan, as million viewers.
Only 1 broadcast per week of a program is listed (esp. news), the Kansai blog now apparently has sumo as the same program every day.

Sumo had one day in the top 30 rated programs of the year 2020, day 15 of the Hatsu basho, Tokushoryu yusho, at 25th place (20.7%). Sumo is the 2nd of only 2 sports events in the top 30, else it was the 96th Tokyo-Hakone and back long distance relay race event (ekiden), ranked 4th (26.8%) and 5th.
