It is still screen-shrinking live-ticker breaking news that it can get hot in the summertime in Japan...

In the past, when there has been a major news event or a breaking political event, NHK has preempted the sumo matches. When they do this, UBS has broadcast the sumo matches live in the normal time slot. Hopefully, when the Naadam is finished, UBS will return to normal scheduling and give us a coverage backup.

Smoother edition of the NHK stream NeutronGirl provided. Japanese language, currently with moto-Mainoumi as guest commentator

Edit: as of now, 4:06 pm JST, the makuuchi broadcast has started. Before the newsflash, they showed the yokozuna dohyo-iri too.

I've been at work the last few days during the live bout times, has that streaming site been working?

It worked perfectly fine all since I first tried it! Thanks a zillion again for this precious hint! (Applauding...) (Zabuton flying...) (Punk rocker...)

Since the new NHK G livestream seems to be smooth and stable, I checked NHK's Live Sumo broadcast schedule.

An overview can be found here.

As it is only available in Japanese, I will list the daily program schedule below:

JST means Japanese Standard Time, it is 7 hours ahead of CEST (Central European Summer Time).

13 July (Wed.) 15:18 JST (live action should begin in mid Juryo)

14 July (Thu.) 15:10 JST (same as above)

15 July (Fri.) 15:10 JST

16 July (Sat.) 15:05 JST

17 July (Sun.) 15:05 JST

18 July (Mon.) 15:05 JST

19 July (Tue.) 15:10 JST

20 July (Wed.) 15:10 JST

21 July (Thu.) 15:10 JST

22 July (Fri.) 15:10 JST

23 July (Sat.) 15:05 JST

24 July (Sun.) 15:05 JST (most likely just in time for Makuuchi action*)

* the bouts on the last day are a bit earlier in order to have time for the Yusho presentation

As Asojima already mentioned, NHK G can change their live coverage on short notice in case of some urgent events (this can range from an important parlament session to a severe earthquake).

If there would be a similar stable stream option for NHK BS1, we would have the luxury of enjoying live makushita and maybe also upper Sandame action, as this channel starts its daily live Ozumo broadcasting already at 13:00 JST.

FWIW, the UBS schedule is now showing the "Nagoya Basho" in today's 16:00 (4:00 PM)entry. The Naadam preemption may be over.

Well, this is Murphy's reaction when you write down a schedule...

No live Sumo coverage on NHK yet... :-(

UBS is back! Yay!

As expected, it is running about 3 minutes ahead of the Vaughn NHK stream. The video quality on Vaughn is cleaner and smoother.

What is also really really nice about that new livestream link Neutrongirl introduced to us is that it also works nicely on my smartphone!

and just as I typed this, the first freeze happened - in the middle of the match between T-Fuji vs. T-Shin....

And it can also be accessed via my office WiFi!!!

the stream is not running smoothly today. Seems like it is rebuffering every 3-5 seconds.

Might be a problem of my smartphone's cache or the WiFi here at the office or is anyone having the same issues?

Posted

I did, on a desktop at home, not via WiFi. Had to switch over to UBS. It was the same yesterday, but fine before.

Vaughn may be starting to have a bandwidth problem. Too many people are discovering the site??

That was also my thought. If this continues, I might consider to try to "VIP Basic" option at 9.95 USD per month.

It says that you get "priority viewing" and no more "Video Servers at Capacity".

Or I just go back to the garage/bridge TV studion in the Ulan Bataar Suburbs (UBS). :-)

I watched it today. Totally smooth after 3 restarts. For the whole 2 hours. So I doubt it's a bandwidth thing. And as for discretion, well, I've said this many times before..

Sorry to say, but if it has a "VIP Basic" paid plan you almost surely expect some hicups when using it free. Some heere, some there. Not always, but somewhat an annoyance... to make you pay :-| There's no free meal.
