I am getting clean uninterrupted sumo coverage on Niji on the lowest channel choice in its listing (the one below J Sport). The NHK choice is crap.

Hell's bells-I missed this!! Thanks!!

I guess it's my problem then. I couldn't get Niji to work for more than 10 minutes without it looping into what was on 5 minutes before. I think the problem is somewhere with the VLC, as without using it niji works OK. But on day 1 everything was fine..

Nope, I don't think so. NIJI was completely unwatchable today.

As already mentioned by others, just choose the lowest channel in the list. I had an uninterupted high-quality stream today!

Could somebody tell me where I can find NIJI? I don't know what this is...

It is a standalone windows/mac app that lets you watch several Japanese TV channels free. It can be downloaded here . After download, it can be activated by providing a legitimate Email address and a password. Don't use your regular password for the Email account. Come up with something unique.

The program (including the login dialog) is in Japanese, but there are enough symbols to figure out most of it if you aren't fluent.

If you need some help getting it going, give a yell here.

Edit: After your initial setup and login, you may need to reboot your computer to get Niji to work.

Ok I will try this. Thanks a lot for your answer.

Edit: At the moment it works. Now I am excited about tomorrow morning...

When I try to download, my antivirus protection blocks it because (according to them) it "contains viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted programs". I guess I am going to give it a miss.

Live streaming is less useful to me because I won't be able view anything during working hours Central European Time...

I'll just stick with Kintamayama's excellent videos, although the thought of being able to watch the lower division matches was appealing.

Oh well.

The NHK broadcast on Niji only provides makuuchi and sometimes about 1/2 of the juryo coverage. The lower divisions are only available on Ustream PPV and some other for-pay systems.

Day 4 - Juryo coverage has started on both of the Niji channels used last night. The NHK channel is running about 1 minute behind the new channel. Since about noon JST, the NHK site has had some intermittent looping sessions. The new channel has been uninterrupted all day.

But the "No signal" screen is annoying as well. Then changing to real NHK you have to watch the same 2 minutes again to then watch the part missing on the Kansai-TV-NHK, but in the meantime this NHK2 is of course advanced further and you can only switch back when a longer break comes up - luckily the news came up just when it happened the 3rd time. If wide-screen NHK in the meantime loops or falters you miss that part for good - if lucky you find it later in the buffered recording. NHK2 has more minutes recorded in the buffer when the recording stops, but also the worse sound.

Each change of channel means a restart of the VLC recording. I watch it while preparing my whole day (and the next) and don't like to interrupt that every few minutes.

Looks that Niji is down for now. Can not start any channel inside Niji!? I get -kanjit text and then :4120?? Perhaps more people have the same issue??

The last channel in the last showed Juryo today and then switched to some news/a movie. But NHK works fine for me today.

I have found a pattern-as long as NHK original works, the last channel goes back to its original schedule. When NHK starts looping badly, the last channel returns to sumo. In any case, the file NHK is outputting has a bug in it and is nonconvertible, which means a lot of extra work for me and a late digest..

Could be. For me, audio plays in realtime on NHK, while video is a little bit slower when I am viewing in fullscreen-mode. So I hear the result of a bout before I actually see it.

Spoke too soon. I have now lost NHK on Niji completely.

UBS is doing better than average. It is getting some temporary freezes.
