The one thing I noticed that I like is that the previous ranks of athletes name the rank in english words.

In the old website they relied on various (similar) colors to convey the same information. If you couldn't tell teal from green, you couldn't tell someone's various ranks apart.

We suspect we may have found a possible placeholder for the link on the Japanese side, but we will probably have to wait until the link is activated on day one to see what they are going to do.

'at' Tokyo is something a lot of folk in Japan use, especially older types. I blame the unqualified 'teachers' / entertainers they are subjected to during their school English classes!

Like so many Japanese organizations these days, they assume they can manage without a native speaker to do the English editing -- but at least they don't appear to think an automatic "translator" is good enough. At least the Kyokai seems to be using a human being -- though in the case of the awful descriptions in the sumo museum, it's a woman who is related to one of the staff.

BAAAAD marketing choice... There is nothing that more instinctively conjures up an impression of amateurism than badly translated promotional text.

I don't even think they need a native speaker for it, just someone (as for anything else) with professional experience. It's probably the case though that a native speaker would come more cheaply than a Japanese person who's studied English to a professional degree...

as Asashosakari says money is often an issue but so too is pride.

The 'best' English speaker in any given division of many major companies will often 'correct' a piece read through or produced by a native speaker just to show they are on top of things or just have the power to do so. Pride - pure and simple.

Working with Japan's top three governmental ministries I often write / help write / check major speeches and documents in English - including PM speeches - and have never seen this attitude in the government thankfully.

I wanted to adjust my result grabber by checking how the HTML code is different from the old NSK site, but unfortunately the result pages are prepared for September basho already and I don't see there results from previous tournaments.

Or does maybe anyone know if it's possible to get a cached/archived version of this page?

For reasons I have forgotten, I have archived two or three results pages for individual days (the ones that were updated live, see picture). I did this by using scrapbook, which is a FF plugin. They should be saved locally in plain HTML and I can see how I can get these files to you (or anybody else) for a small fee if you are interested in these.

I have no idea if its indicative of the NSK's unwillingness to go with the times, or if it is something that is not normally done in Japan, but I find it REALLY strange that they don't seem to have an official repository of past results. Replacing the last basho's results to make room for the fresh ones is very 1990s...

For a sport with such pride in its long history (and a fondness for statistics) it is very strange that something like Doitsuyama's Sumo Database is not maintained by the NSK as part of their own website.
