Sure, but today's opponent was also komusubi last year and that went well.

but we are talking about Wakakoyu ... his style of sumo is all over the place.

the conversation about the toughness of Homasho as an opponent is mainly because of his defensive style. He is not in top form either but he is a more worthy aite style-wise.

well ... we will see how Osuna can handle a rikishi like Homasho and we (and i mean "he") can move on to the next first match against an opponent he might face more times in the future and with a style that could make anyone uncomfortable from time to time (ask Asasekiryu's opponents for example).

The best thing about Musashikuni is that he is still young enough to look for another job.

The first kachi-koshi of the basho was a real beauty - a spectacular tasukizori by Ikeru.

When Wakakoyu went to the mawashi that match was over – Osunaarashi isn’t going to lose to Waka on the belt.

Homasho should be a good test for Osun both of styles and of veteran technique. But let’s not forget that Homasho is 32 now, coming off an injury (although he looks much better to me than he did last basho) and was never all that to begin with. He never made sekiwake and the few times he’s made komusubi his record was 4-11. I think he’s no more than a mid maegashira rikishi now – still the class of juryo, but not a world shaker.

Gloomy Kotooshu, looking sure to have won the first bout, again and again complaining to reporters: “To me it looked like the other fell down first, oh yes. How was it ?”

Yesterday was a bad day for his heya, both ōzeki being “robbed” of their wins; I just hope he doesn’t let it get to him and continues winning from today on.

Watching Kinta's recap just now reminded me - those duelling (and probably drunken) "HOMASHO!" and "NIONOUMI!" shouts were hilarious.

Edit: Here's the audio video:

Kisenosato's Day 6 bout was the 900th in his career, all without any absences.

Full house today.

Takanoiwa confirms again that he is in top form this basho, only 3 more for makuuchi.

Masunoyama is recovering, but is far from save yet. Sokokurai looks better than he, but

Kotoyuuki still impresses with a much better sumo.

Kotoyuki's development is also surprising to me too. He found a way to fix his footwork and he stopped ending up on his belly in the dohyo. He maintained the aggression that is his characteristic but he is not over-extending much lately. His oshi sumo is not bad (not the best around but definitely not the worst either) and now that he is following it up with his legs he can be hard to push or pull around. Nice ..... (i still don't like his pre-bout "rituals" though)

Aran had a nice greco-roman ..... eh ... i meant "sumo" bout that was made to order so that he can be in his comfort zone.

Takarafuji can be so lethargic sometimes that it hurts my eyes. And i would love it if he could give me reasons from time to time in order to excuse myself for liking him. Really bad today ... damn.

Toyonoshima could be genki after all. Beating Yoshikaze is always a good sign as he should rarely lose to rikishi with this style of sumo. Now we just need a win against a strong opponent after maintaining morozashi in order to feel safer for his future.

Gyoji Kimura Tamajiro looked very distressed in the stream close-up (0:57, time code doesn't work now, and autostart) after the mono-ii was called in the Ikioi-Kitataiki bout – was he fearing a sashi-chigai decision ?

if looks could kill then Gyoji Kimura Tamajiro would be dead after what Tokitenku would attest it was a matta by Shohozan, but never called by the gyoji.

personally a have no problem with the decision but i can see his point here. A replay would help but while streaming it looked like a matta indeed.

EDIT: after a nice correction by Akinomaki i have to say that the goyji for this match was Shikimori Kandayu and not Kimura Tamajiro as my laziness ordered me to post ... :-P

Kotoshogiku robbed again :)

Myogiryu seemed inspired by yesterdays bout - and Kotoshogiku seems to have a goldfish-like memory.

At least Kotooshu took revenge for his stablemate by beating Aminishiki with just another henka.

Kotooshu did it to the right man, but his brilliant sumo from the start of the basho has vanished. Not doing training bouts because of his eye should effect his performance later on even more.

Kotooshu and Shogiku should just beat Kisenosato and put him in a kadoban position for next basho (i predict losses to the Yoks and possibly Kakuryu from what i have seen this far).

This could cool all the tsunatori talks for ages and we can return to normality.

I think his will to win is still strong in this basho, a henka on an old veteran isn't going to win him any friends (i don't think the crowd looked too impressed) yet he decided to do so anyway, a lot of his losses seem to come from his "lack of spirit," but a determined Kotooshu is a dangerous opponent and i think he may cause an upset to Hakuho if he is in the right frame of mind, Harumafuji has his number so i don't think he will beat him.

Disclaimer: (it's fairly obvious) I have no idea what i'm talking about, i just want to join in. :)

Well, the crowd is not so excited to see consecutive henka late in the day - especially if it is against AND from ozeki

Kotoshōgiku robbed again. Good riddance Aminishiki. Ōsunaarashi robbed of a tori-naoshi.

Kotoshogiku didn't get robbed, not on this world. He went all out without looking forward and that is what happens when you do this. Dejima knows it better.

Commendable the way Osunaarashi sticks to his principles, but seldom have I seen people adhering to such principles in a way that affects their more 'practical' life. Interesting stuff, but I just feel I can't root for him anymore, it is just too much interference with his sumo.

Oh, shut up. Doing a henka is despicable, Kotoshōgiku has one of the best tachi-ai in all sumō.

IIJM* or do we see a lot of okuridashi in the sekitori matches this basho?

Maybe I was just too shocked to see wannabe-yok Kisenosato being shown the door by the impressive Chiyotairyu on Day 5.

The only day without okuridashi in Makuuchi & Juryo occurred on Day 3, while there were 3 on Day 6.

(* = is it just me)

tokitenku could also teach other how to avoid injuries even with his kicking habit.

Day 6: 4600 spectators.

They chanted “one more” after the mono-ii was called, hoping for Takayasu causing something.

The first Heisei born sanyaku is close. He didn't go with Kisenosato to degeiko, but trained for strengthening his lower half. Now after good results with the top rankers (looking better than Kisenosato with the lower ranks), he mustn't falter against the lower ones.
