Hokutoriki just came off a 13 win basho, nearly winning a yusho, and earning a position in sanyaku. Was Natsu 2004 a fluke, an anomaly, or has he really improved his Sumo and will he continue to put up spectacular results?

For those who don't know the expressions 'one hit wonder' and 'real deal', vote real deal if you think Hokutoriki will continue to do well (be a sanyaku regular/ozeki candidate), and one hit wonder if you think this basho was special for him, but he will generally be in mid maegashira.

I think he has the skills to be a sanyaku regular like Akinoshima, and possibly even more.

But sumo is a game that is 90% mental, and it may be the case that the stars were just aligned right for this basho for him. If he gains confidence as he goes, then he could definitely do well.

We should know more about what he is made of by the end of this year.

But then he could be hit with injuries, and end up like Kotomitsuki, but that is the unpredicability of sumo.

i think that next time he will lose the element of surprise and have a more difficult basho. He is very strong on a good day but cannot believe that he is going to have only good days from now on.....

i say give him some time to prove himself but for now he is a "one time wonder" to my eyes.....

Can you say "Funkytown" by Peusdo Echo? or "Macarena" - Los Bel Rio, "Don't Worry Be Happy" - Boby McFerrin, "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men' "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes.........we could on couldnt we......... :-( :-D

I hunch slightly higher than folks above; between Wakanosato & Kyokutenho level for the time being -next 6 basho or so.

I say his next basho is 9-6 or 10-5. - But then if 10-5 he could be a good Ozeki Candidate.....

When I think about this logically I feel myself defying logic as his Nodowa main sumo could be easily detracted by focused Mawashi, Harite, Henka, Side pull techniques etc.

One hit wonder.

He'll make it back to sanyaku a couple time before the Europeans and new Mongols arrive. But he will never win a Yusho, and never be an Ozeki candidate, barring a KK in Nagoya.

Come to think of it, has he any chance at being promoted to Ozeki in Nagoya? :-D He has 22 in 2, if he won 11 he'd have his 33. Do you think he'd be turned down even in the unlikely event he scored a zensho?

Oh, I forgot to think about last basho. I wonder if two people with the same 33 'quality' & distribution of wins as Sekiwake rank vs as moving up the ladder would be treated quite differently... I thought that would be the case.

If not, they can consider the fact even 10-5 would make 32 wins next basho.

But I heard no spin on Hokutoriki Ozeki story from the media or kyokai, perhaps he needs more than 34wins(then12-3) as someone indincated on the forum?

As far as I know, the Kyokai mentioned that Riki's ozeki streak will only begin from Natsu basho, disregarding his Haru result.

Although I wish it to be the real hit, someone inside me tells that he was in overperformancing in Natsu basho.

"Funkytown" by Peusdo Echo

Interestingly though, "Funky town" was a cover version of the song. Don't know much more than that. Perhaps things can have a second chance. Admittedly Pseudo Echo never made much of the fame.

As for Hoku, I don't really see him dominating, unless he rides a wave of self belief from this basho's result.

Interesting choice of choices Real Deal or One Hit Wonder.

Hokutoriki's sumo is pretty much a one-hit (1 dimesional) sumo. Strong nodo-wa followed by oshi or tsuki. If he has the strength and smarts to avoid lots of henka then he could go further, but needs to expand his technique range.

The original by Lipps Inc. would fall into the one-hit wonder category as well, kind of doubling it up there...

Of course, the best one-hit wonder for irony purposes is "That Thing You Do" which is a song by a fake band from a movie about a band called the Oneders (changed to Wonders) who self-fulfilled the prophesy of becoming one-hit wonders, and then managed to become one-hit wonders in real life as well despite the fact that they didn't actually exist.

totally (You are going off-topic...)

My opinion is that Hokutoriki will be savagely dismembered and destroyed next basho, and we'll all forget this basho ever happened by the end of next year.

That long!

We've already forgotten(Practically)Asasekiryu's slightly less spectacular 13-2 last basho.
