I am angry. Takanoiwa-Ooiwato bout. Bout starts, Ooiwato wins easily. But no, shinpan says no hands on deck by Takanoiwa, rematch. Ooiwato wins even more easily. But no, shinpan says no hands on deck, scolding Takanoiwa profusely. Take three. Takanoiwa has both hands on deck, longer bout, Takanoiwa wins. So what happened was Takanoiwa was rewarded for his lousy tachiai skills with a win. Happened before, but I don't remember seeing it this blatantly unfair before.

As if someone wants to give Takanoiwa the yusho on a platter.

couldn't agree more ( and it's not because I had picked Oiwato in Toto....)

MIB have to be consistent, but sometimes they just don't seem to care at all

- either that or they tend to fall into "inemuri"-mode too easily (-.-) Zzzz

Weren't there even three non-win wins by Oiwato? Total sham, at least on live viewing all those "false" starts looked well synchronized enough to me.

Could be-I was so annoyed because I KNEW Takanoiwa was going to benefit in the end.

And now he is the sole leader in Juryo.

That opens the door for a hole new conspiracy theory...

THAT'S why so many somotori didn't really put their fists down to tachi-ai. Because that leaves the possibility open, that the shinpan can easily demand a restart and so they can indirect influence a little bit the results...

(ok, I'm just kidding, but I guess some would take it seriously)

Shimpan raised his hand immediately after the 1st bout started - I don't think this had anything to do with orchestrating a Takanoiwa win. Maybe they just wanted to teach him how to correctly Tachi-ai before he moves up. :)

*Edit

hahaha that Okinoumi bout was hilarious! Did he think he was getting a matta or something?

When reading the title, I was wondering which bout you meant. So I decided to watch all Juryo bouts first. And I must say I thought it would have been on Asasekiryu-Satoyama. Though that's also because I tend to skip false starts. Oiwato might indeed be robbed a bit.

or similarly, state an example once in a while. If they wouldn't it gets worse and worse ofer time.

Also the first one didn't look much different than lots of others. Very unlucky indeed for Oiwato.

The spectators didn't mind that much it seems, Takanoiwa is 3rd in the popularity poll for juryo.

The eventual "real" bout was a pretty good one, it's just that it should never have happened.

It has always struck me as odd that the "coaches" of the rikishi are also the side line judges of the bouts. It is a rather peculiar occurrence in 'sport', can you imagine a soccer/football match with the assistant referees on the sideline being provided by each team? Good luck getting with contentious offside calls.

Shinpan should be impartial and independent, though it's traditional and fans like seeing the former stars out and getting up on the dohyo for their little committee meetings.

However you can't take it as absolutely impartial and honest.

Perhaps if someone important enough cried "bullshit" to incidences like today, something might happen.

Did the crowd boo? I would've. Some loudmouth shouldve given the shinpan a serve.

It is to prevent this that each ichimon/group names one of its own oyakata for each of the five shimpan groups. So in theory, any time one shimpan tries to favour a rikishi, there are four others on other camps to vote him down. When the last three shifts come back (juryo first and second half of makunouchi) one judge drops out _in turn each day_ to make way for one of the three chief judges -- who are considered to be so high-up that they are beyond favouritism.

Takanoiwa is now 11-2 and well on the way to the yusho. Only The Joke can spoil it for him.

For several bouts recently the gyoji repeat their command of "Put your hands down" before the tachi-ai, if the rikishi don't react, with a slightly impatient voice the second time. Was there a bout with 3 times that ? - and did they do that before? I began to notice that only after the Takanoiwa-Oiwato incident.

Direct matchup tomorrow. Thought they might save it for senshuraku, but I guess they don't trust Jokoryu to not lose tomorrow and potentially find himself two behind.

I also noticed that, although I've heard the gyoji say it many times before. It seems this time they are a bit more emphatic.

After a major screw up like this (which btw proves to have been a crucial factor in the Juryo yusho race), everyone starts instinctively to try to be "proper".

Its sort of the "See? Everything is fine, just normal, no screw ups here" reaction...
