Jesinofuji Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 THIRD STRAIGHT YUSHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To quote a prominent member of the forum; YOU CANNOT COMPREHEND THE POWER OF THE BLUE DRAGON!!! Thats right, Asashoryu is on top again. Not as smoothly as he was in the last to basho, but today is certainly is king. (Applauding...) (Punk rocker...) :-( (Blowing horn...) (Bouncing group) (Blowing horn...) (Applauding...) (Punk rocker...) (Applauding...) Hoku did great this time, he made this basho's end exciting in a way we havn't seen for a half year. His surprising success gave Asashoryu haters someone to cheer for. But in the very end, a costly mistake gave Shoryu a chance that he was not about to pass up. Shoryu is now 43-2 this year and is on pace to tie the record for most wins in 6 basho (correct me if I'm wrong). He's on pace to break Taiho's yusho record, and he's still getting better. But there's a storm brewing in the juryo and upper makushita divisions that could result in a tsunami of powerful compeditors for him. But for now, its time to (In a state of confusion...)

Yoavoshimaru Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 The question is, will he hold the next basho? His "pre-decessors" haven't. You might want to do some research before boldly making false claims like that (You are going off-topic...) Four rikishi have won four basho or more in a row, and three of them have done it two or more times. Now, if Asashoryu wins 6 in a row and is going for his 7th, that would be unprecendented. Hakke Yoi query
Asashosakari Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 The question is, will he hold the next basho? His "pre-decessors" haven't. You might want to do some research before boldly making false claims like that (Laughing...) Umm, the "will he hold" clearly referred to Hokutoriki and the previous gaggle of Maegashira who had outstanding results, only to falter in the next tournament.
Fujisan Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 I wouldnt say Deijima was unexpected at the time- A rikishi of his quality at the low rank he was, really he only did what he could and should have done.
Gusoyama Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 (edited) In the last 10 years, only 13 maegashira rikishi have gotten 12 or more wins. Only 4 times have they gotten KK in the next basho.(30.7%) 12 out of 29 in the last 20 years,(41.3%) and 21 out of 43 for the last 30 years.(48.9%) It should be interesting how the 3 guys who did it last time fare this basho. I'm guessing 6,5, and 7 wins for Hoku, Tama, and Hakuho. Have I mentioned how much I love Hakke Yoi? (Laughing...) Oh, in the past 40 years, a maegashira with 12 or more wins has never won the yusho in the next basho, and has gotten a jun-yusho only 3 times. Edited June 2, 2004 by Gusoyama
Kashunowaka Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Have I mentioned how much I love Hakke Yoi? (Laughing...) Thank you. (In love...)
Zuikakuyama Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 Gusoyama, I think you can refine your search a bit better. The chances for M1-M5 with 12 or more wins of achieving KK in the next basho is substantially higher. It is on the order of 80%. This is what you would expect considering that they are facing essentially the same level of opponents over the 2 bashos. The same logic of course do not apply to the lower megashiras. They would be promoted by a great deal, and would face a different level of opposition. Their chances of achieving kk is on the order of 20%.
Gusoyama Posted June 3, 2004 Posted June 3, 2004 You're absolutely correct, the level of opposition doesn't change that much for well-performing maegashiras. The reason I did it for all maegashira is that the rikishi that have done well the last few bashos have been from the full range, from M1 to M17. So you're right, there's statistically more of a chance for Hokutoriki to get a KK than Hakuho, but something tells me that Hakuho will have more wins. Thats just a personal feeling though. :)
