Sasanishiki Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Will Hoku hold his nerve and win the yusho? Will the pressure get to him? Will he have promotion thoughts on his mind as well? Will his opponents in the coming days be out to stop the yusho and thus make their name for the basho? Or will he show ice water in his veins and take it out? Exciting isn't it? And you can expect that there will be some kensho riding on his bouts too as senshuraku approaches.

Not exactly yaocho, but preferring one yusho winner over another?
Yubiquitoyama Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Will his opponents 'melt away' to give him his opportunity. Not exactly yaocho, but preferring one yusho winner over another? Of course that's yaocho and a rather serious version at that. It would surprise me if there would be anything pointing to such though.

I didn't mean either that any money changed hands or even that anyone met to fix this. Just that someone might be less well motivated to beat Hokutoriki when they are regularly treated as a rag doll by Asashoryu. Also I was not picking on a particular opponent of Riki's. Sorry. I know we have been round and round the subject of what constitues yaocho. Perhaps what I was talking about was not the deliberate act of losing, only a rikishi not quite going for it with 100% of his will.
Yubiquitoyama Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 (edited) Sorry. I know we have been round and round the subject of what constitues yaocho.Perhaps what I was talking about was not the deliberate act of losing, only a rikishi not quite going for it with 100% of his will. It is a difficult thing to define, yaocho... Masumi Abe on the SML once made a list of what could be said to constitue yaocho and I think it was 5 or 6 different things he listed... Anyway, it seems those who think yaocho is very common use a very liberal interpretation of the word while those who think yaocho is less common often use a more serious definition. I suppose that's why people who objectively seems to have about the same estimate of how much "yaocho" (in some definition) exists can get completely furious at each other. It seems the interpretation used often is a measure of the way one see things in general (glass half full, glass half empty kind of thing) rather than of how much "yaocho" there is in sumo... (Cheers...) Anyway, that was probably quite off-topic and dangerous at that, since I'm sure I just started some kind of political discussion without knowing it (Cheers...)
