Couldnt help to feel a little for the mediocre maegashira - Takamisakari. His bouts are tough for him because of all the Kensho that are getting put on his fights. Being the crowd favourite he has attracted many kensho more than his ability would otherwise dictate. Therefore its a great opportunity for other low rankers to pick up

some bonus cash, because lets face it a win and a stack of Kensho against the likes Asashouryu is slim for a low ranker but Takamisakari is the best chance for a bonus. I think with that extra incentive there other rank and filers are going to put in a little more effort and be a little more determined. Yesterday was a classic example, Kotoryu was charging aggressively and when he won and received his envelopes there was a wry contented smile on his face that said " thanks for the easy money"

"Poor Takamisakari"!?

When he does his face-slapping finale before a bout, the other rikishi just stands in his corner--boiling and getting pissed. As much as the cash bonus, I think this showing up of the other rikishi provides the incentive for all of "Poor Takmisakari's" opponent to REALLY "do their best".

Really bad timing! This time Takamisakari took advantage of the huge amount of cash offered for Chiyotaikai s bouts. Takamisakari is really funny, so lets just enjoy him without ridicule! Go Takami!

Oh, I think he's too timid. He daren't fight! (Applauding...) Moreover he is very repectful of his opponent: he looks so sorry when he wins! And as he sees very bad, he looks like a robot!

I like him, he is funny.

He's not "poor" as in should be pitied. (Applauding...) Good for him with the ginboshi, attitude, etc, but we've already discussed his fragile mental state at length in the past...

I would say it was an even split. Both were getting about 6 to 8 kensho placed on their bouts prior to this. So of the 12 that were placed on this one, 6 probably came for the Ozeki and 6 for Sakari.

As for Takamisakari being mediocre, before he was injured against Asashoryu in keiko he was anything but mediocre. He just hasn't been the same rikishi since.

Again another example of what I am talking about. Toki who has been pretty weak all Basho came out fired up, gave Takamisakari a viscous blood drawing slap and then dominated him out of the ring, this wasnt the Toki who was fighting all Basho this was a Toki motivated by the thought of a 270,000 Yen "money for jam" bonus (9kensho) for beating on Robocop. Did you see the look of satisfaction on his face and the pump of his fists at the end of the bout.? That was a "thanks for coming" to Robocop if ever I saw one

As Zentoryu-zeki said, Takamisakari hasn't been the same since he was injured in keiko against Asashoryu - true. ALSO, he hasn't been the same since Akebonehead left sumo and went into K1 (for a great take on that situation, see: Falling From Gaijin Grace), and left him without his main mentor/shrink.

Actually, it's more likely that he was motivated by the desire not to drop to Juryo and lose some 20% of his monthly income...the kensho money was a nice bonus on top of it, but I doubt that was his primary reason for being so fired up in the bout.

What's with the sympathy? Tis a man's sport and if he cannot take that on the chin he shouldn't be in the dohyo.

As my mentors in the Brit military used to say (and excuse the language) - "Shit happens, live with it". (In a state of confusion...)

Yeah that is what I like about sumo; severe. I see far more dog-eat-dog than in business here; there is no win-win.

Well, taking this a bit OT but for what it's worth, I found that article to be a load of self-righteous bunk (as a foreigner myself living in Japan).

Opinions vary... :-P It's another way of looking at things, and a good contrast to what we see posted here. Doesn't hurt to look at things from another angle; see things through another's eyes. :-P

We all have different things to say, and different ways to say them. Too bad we couldn't all meet over a couple of friendly beers and have these conversations! :-D

I'll take the liberty of repeating a question as I posted yesterday in the "off topic" section here as well since the discussion is up and running (the activity there seems to be so low):

" Just read the article linked to by Otokonoyama in the thread about "Poor Takamisakari" ("Honbasho Talk") ....Basically arguing that forreigners have problems integrating in the japanes society in general, which I'm aware of, and discuss around the fate of Akebono in particular.

He's supposedly "driven out" from the sumoworld and along irrational paths ending up in a, so far, doubtful career in K1... I don't have any opinion about the truth of the reasoning in his case, but it leads me to the question of the mongolian sumo guys... Are they as much gaijin as the westerners? Is it realistic for them to continue in the sumo world after their acive career? Remember reading somewhere, for example, that 10ho applied for citizenship recently with the outspoken ambition of a future in the business.. "

Adachi--

where is this? I'm most interested, but you're not talking about the jungyo in China are you? (wanted to go, but didn't get my act together re: visa et al.)

In the kokugikan - like the one in early Feb (was it?)

Juryo / Makunouchi knockout kind of thing. Winners keep coming back. Starts about 11.45 ends at 5ish

Taiko show, someone like Minamonta doing some commentary with Chiyonofuji (last time)

Good fun - sumo isn't 100? serious though but I guess we'll see Shoryu VS Hokutoriki - NSK humor and all.
