Some people here are terrible. I would suggest, you know-it-alls, break a foot and then go out there to wrestle a 140kg guy out of respect for the yusho race! Are you stupid or what? Why on Earth would someone risk not his future in sport, but possibly his ability to walk just to please a bunch of morons like you guys? Kotooshu is unfortunately in a bad state and as of today he seems likely to miss Nagoya!

I did ten years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis. No pay but lots of pain. I persisted. Oh, how I wish that I could only have a foot booboo instead of a relentless and crippling autoimmune disease that gets worse with every passing year.

Kotoushu's days as a rikishi are quickly running out and his kyujo decision was a disasterous mistake in my opinion.

Future ability to walk? Is his foot gangrenous?

It is up to you to decide what to do with your health. Do not apply your experience to others.

If you have suffered, that does not mean that other people must choose to suffer or ruin their health.

It is great that Kotooshuu decided to withdraw without giving a damn about the things Some people would say...

I don't remember seeing so many negative posts when Chiyotaikai went kyujo on Senshuraku, thereby giving up his chance to win the yusho!

Or Wajima who went kyujo on day 14 of Kyusho 1973 and won the yusho. :-)

When someone gives up a thing that's within his grasp, when it's not sudden and at the last minute with no further information, it's normal to presume he was seriously injured. It was HIS loss more than anyone else's in that case.

Different sport, but....

There was one Wimbledon final (I forget which) between the Williams sisters when Venus wanted to withdraw before it because of a serious leg injury (thereby forfeiting to Serena), but the Wimbledon officials told her that was not the done thing for the final. She turned up, and duly lost - but gave the fans something.

Unless Osh had a broken leg, I would have liked to have seen him turn up, no matter what his condition (would he have withdrawn if he had a 7-7 record, I wonder? If yes, then maybe I am being too harsh, *maybe*).

This is pretty much what I was thinking, only I wasn't so polite about it. No, I wouldn't expect him to compete with a broken leg, but no one was saying "broken leg" at the time. That's what struck me as weird.

At the time, I thought I smelled something fishy, and all kinds of conspiratory stuff came to mind... But in retrospect, if Osh really wanted to enhance and influence the Yusho race, he simply could have shown up and simply lost. And we've seen him lose in weird and wonderful ways.

The fact that he didn't show up at all, now that I think about it (and assuming that the reason for his absence is legit) shows a degree of legitimacy. IMHO.

And I think I can accept that.

I would say that the person with the most right to feel aggrieved would be Tochiozan.

No kensho in a fusen bout. All that lovely pocket money.......... gone, just like that!

Hmmm, this starts to feel confirmed enough. I may have to readjust my most recent (and unfounded) speculations on Kotooshu's true motives for going kyujo.

"Multiple" is not a peachy word in the realm of medicine. Let's hope the Ozeki clot doesn't get resolved by exactly this.

He has only gone kyujo twice in the last four years...for all that i have criticized him in the past, I have never seen him as a malingerer!

Get well soon Kotooshu...his recent sumo has been pretty good when his brain is engaged.

With his kyujo 'Oshu has beated 3 competitors in a row and alarmed for other two also. Much better than in his all basho...

Kotooshu went kyujo with a right tarsus ligament injury. On the 31st he made clear he wants to enter the Nagoya basho. His first public comment since the injury: I have to take part.

Sadogatake-oyakata wants to let him enter. Since the 29th he put on his mawashi and was on the keiko-ba.

He did upper body exercise and still can't put weight on the leg: It's swollen but gets better

According to the oyakata, he came to apologize on the 21st. Kotooshu began oxygen capsule treatment this day.

Booing from the spectators who became to know it, a "it's really regrettable" from the riji-cho in his address on senshuraku. Now both the NSK and Sadogatake-beya put Kotooshu virtually under house arrest.

A knowledgeable party: "Regardless of how his injury has healed, till the end of the next Nagoya basho he should refrain from eye-catching behaviour."

Kotooshu wasn't at the shooting of a variety programm on the 5th in the Kokugikan and didn't take part in a pleasure trip to Makao of Sadogatake-beya 5 days starting on the 3rd. Officially because he is concentrating on the treatment.

Luckily his leg is getting better and it looks he can take part in the Nagoya basho. But just one day of kyujo was at a big price.

Now it's the fracture confirmed again. The back of the right foot. He's doing keiko alone. After practise it's ultra sonic wave and high pressure oxygen capsule treatment "so that the bones come to stick together again quickly".

"It's not OK but if I not slowly work to get able to move again ..."

Moushiai-keiko ability is not in sight yet, he repeated the basics while protecting his right foot.

I would probably sit the next tournament out. The injury could only worsen if he comes back too soon and would prove detrimental in terms of his performance. Thanks for the updates.

"I can't say I'm in good condition. I really want to enter Nagoya but I don't know how much I will be able to prepare.." said Kotooushuu . He was seen dragging his foot at the rikishi-kai yesterday as well. He's still only able to lend his chest to the young apprentices and has done no moshi-ai whatsoever. Asked if he may enter Nagoya totally unprepared, he answered "Yup, that may happen.."

Sponichi reports him as astoundingly well, restarting with energetic keiko on the 26th.

Against makushita and below he had more than 10 bouts in a row.

They also report multiple fractures in the back of his foot.

But Sadogatake-oyakata said: It's OK. When performing the yusho is the goal.

Nikkan for the 27th reporting a worse condition may mean he did too much yesterday.

On the 27th Kotooshu did 22 bouts against makushita winning all.

"It's getting a bit better, but I can't say it's going smooth."

Sadogatake-oyakata: "It still takes some time till he can train with sekitori. The Nagoya basho may be one without rehearsal."

Kotooshu regarding the worry around him: "I'll do my best to be able to enter the main basho."

Is it the 'done' (i.e. accepted) thing in ozumo to target a known injury? In other words if Kotooshu chooses to participate in Nagoya, can he expect plenty of leg trip attempts from those rikishi who could pull off such a move?
