I realize that I'm sorta late, but I recently stumbled onto an article that mentioned one or two Rikishi from Michinoku-beya being forced to retire due to the match fixing scandal. In searching further, I found that Toyozakura, Jumonji, Hakuba & Kirinowaka retired in May 2011. I'm aware that they retired because of a scandal, but was it the match fixing scandal?

Most stunningly, I also discovered that Daigen retired at the same time. I didn't find anything that referenced him being involved in a scandal. Why did he retire at such a young age? :-|

He appeared on this list of March/May 2011 retirees, and wasn't tagged as being involved in a scandal, but I don't know anything else about him.

Sooo... does anyone in Japan follow the Sumo-beyas & able/willing to please answer regarding Daigen??

Also, is Tatsutayama Toshiyori still at Michinoku-beya?

Correction/Mistype: I didn't mean to refer to Tatsutayama Oyakata. I meant, is Kunio Fukuda Toshiyori (Fukunosato) still at Michinoku-beya?

Fukunosato is a wakaimonogashira at Michinoku Beya and not an oyakata (i.e. on the organisational side, rather than the teaching staff) and still there as far as I can tell.

Last time I looked, he was still there. You need to be aware that retired men who remain in the Sumo Kyokai are not all oyakata. As Naganoyama has remarked, some are wakaimonogashira, mainly in charge of the entrants and maezumo, but also reporting kyujo of lower-ranked rikishi throughout a basho. There aren't enough of them to go round, so many heya have 'managers' who do similar jobs. Other respected retirees are the lower-ranked (but still valuable) sewanin, who have a whole lot of jobs. Many years ago I wrote an article on them for "Sumo World".

Orion who's known a lot of these since they were barefoot newbies,,,,

Yes, I'm aware that Fukunosato is not an Oyakata & that he assists with newer Rikishi. I may be mistaken, but I used the term Toshiyori to refer to someone that's an elder & respected. Is this not a proper use of the term? I would appreciate the correction.

Orion, is the article that you referred to still available for reading? Do you know anything about Daigen?

Thanks to you & Naganoyama for sharing your knowledge!
