Yubinhaad Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 *Except for a new Juryo rikishi on day 1, who ended up 4-4 (can happen in special circumstances) in his previous basho in Makushita Possible, but I wouldn't worry about it - it's happened once in the seven-bout era, and that was four decades ago. (Now watch it happen each basho this year (Laughing...) )
Asashosakari Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Possible, but I wouldn't worry about it - it's happened once in the seven-bout era, and that was four decades ago. Wakakoyu a few years ago was the first one since 1972 to even get a chance to finish 4-4 in makushita (he converted successfully to 5-3), so I agree, it's probably not something to worry about. :-) BTW, just one basho after that 4-4 promotion there was a 4-4 non-promotion.
Yubinhaad Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) BTW, just one basho after that 4-4 promotion there was a 4-4 non-promotion. Yeah, and from the same rank no less - Aobayama must've been pretty perplexed by that. It took him two further years to finally reach Juryo, but in the end he had a much more successful career than Atsuminada. In that same basho as Aobayama's non-promotion, there was also the only case* of a Jonidan rikishi fighting eight bouts. Wakamaeda's claim to fame. :-) * Well, only known case, anyway. Randomitsuki Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Yeah, and from the same rank no less - Aobayama must've been pretty perplexed by that. Actually, there is a method to this, as was explained here. The 4-4 of the promoted rikishi came after leading 4-3, so it counted like a 4-3. The subsequent 4-4 of the non-promoted rikishi came after a 3-4. In this case, his promotion was treated like a mixture of 4-3 and 3-4, i.e. no rank change and no promotion.

Incidentally, while the treatment of 8th-bout-losses seems pretty consistent over time (being ignored altogether), 8th-bout-wins seem to have had more leeway - I was looking at some early 1990s banzukes a few days ago, and 5-3's (after 4-3) were clearly treated exactly like 5-2's, not the mixed record they're (correctly, IMO) being treated as nowadays. Or maybe they just forget about it sometimes. :-) Edited March 12, 2012 by Asashosakari

Kintamayama Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Kisenosato Homasho Both losers- you better change your entry..
Flohru Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Win: Kisenosato Loss: Toyohibiki (and I thought this game actually will turn out to be too easy...)
Pandaazuma Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Day 4: Win: Kisenosato Lose: Kokkai It's a good game, this. And I think Jakusotsu is right...no restrictions seem necessary.
