Otokonoyama Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 What about Konishiki? What do we do with almost yoks? 102-48: 68% win/loss ratio the ten basho from first yusho, or 105-45: 70% win/loss ratio the ten basho from his eighth jun-yusho

salle Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Baruto interview for russian sumo site with very amateurish translation by myself: Q: Please accept warm congratulations from everyone who was cheering and worrying about you. Please tell us where is the Emperor Cup right now? A: In my heya Onoe. But the cup was given to me for few days only. Today-tomorrow our young rikishi should return it to the Japan Sumo Association. I will keep a copy of it. Q: Isn't it sad to part with the priceless Cup? A: That's the right thing to do. At heya someone can accidentally break it (laughs) Q: Along with the Emperor Cup you got a lot of presents from sponsors. For example a barrel of elite sake, tons of various food. What will you do with this wealth? A: What my teammates can eat and drink will stay in our heya. The rest I will give away. Q: What did you feel when you were awarded? A: I worked very hard. That's why I thought I am worhty of it. Q: You had tears in your eyes. What called them? A: My weakness (laughs) Q: What is the cause of such great success? Only diligence? Maybe your self-confidence growed? Maybe you have changed something with your technique? Or as you like to say you were just lucky? A: (thinks) Before competition and during the tournament I felt very well. Technique I didn't change. Virtually everyone I was fighting with were small rikishi. They don't let me grab their mawashi. It happened by chance that my tsuppari went well. Q: When did you believe you can win the tournament? A: I wasn't confident I can do it until the end. Only when yokozuna suffered third defeat I did believe in my victory. Q: Do you have confidence now you can become a great champion? A: I can't say anything. No big confidence. But maybe it will come. Of course winning the Hatsu Basho gives me a psychological force. Q: You love and appreciate solitude. But now you will have to be in the spotlight all the time and you will have more "community work". Are you ready for this? A: Somehow I will try to cope with that. Q: Are you ready to sacrifice your private life for the sake of highest rank yokozuna? A: Ask me about that in a month (laughs) Q: How strong is your desire to become great champion? A: I have that desire in my heart. But you have to be a match to this title at each tournament. Great psychological strength is required. Q: Do you consider it necessary to achieve yokozuna rank to change something in yourself: your wrestling or your character? Perhaps you have to become more serious, evil? A: Serious, evil, cold-hearted ... No I can't be like that. Then I will become an actor. I am who I am. And I don't plan to change myself. Of course I want the youkozuna rank. But if I become great champion it will be only if I remain who I am. Q: Are you going to prepare for spring tournament in special way? A: No special plans yet. But I will arrive in Osaka earlier. And I will more carefully work during practice about the tachiai and tsuppari. Q: Yokozuna Decision Committee marked a target for you for March tournament: 12 wins. What goal do you set for yourself? A: Must fight well in each bout. That's most important. As for number of wins I don't think about them. It is also very important to be confident and avoid injuries. Q: Are you worried about your knee already injured three times? A: No problems yet. Q: During last day of January basho your wife was sitting in the hall wearing beautiful white kimono. She was welcomed very warmly. Elena wore traditional Japanese dress, to emphasize the solemnity of the event to express a respect for the Japanese? A: The kimono suits her more than a dress (laughs). Q: Year and half ago you said that you have two dreams. Small one: To win a basho. And big one: to become a father. You have won the tournament. Now what do you say? A: Now I have two big dreams (laughs).
