Gusoyama Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 This is purely a thought exercise, and is truly like trying to predict the weather for hte next 5 years, but who do you feel will do the best out of the "big prospects" out there? I'm sure I'm missing some, I do not claim to have encyclopedic knowledge of the big prospects. Its a long list, and each have their own fans, I know!
Mark Buckton Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Interesting idea Gusoyama-san and definitely shows you read around on the forum including the as of yet unknown I mentioned -Shibuya. Gave him my vote more out of locality (lives a few hundred metres away) than anything - and he may never see his name in a poll again if he doesn't make it past Makushita. (Applauding...)
aderechelsea Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 i voted for Kotooshu for two reasons (i could find reasons to vote others too but i HAD to make ONE choice) : - he is Eastern European which means to me that he has a tendency to succeed in combat sports and overcome hardships (mostly mentally). - he has the frame to be a fearsome rikishi. He needs a few pounds more but this can be done over the years.
Asashosakari Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 I voted for Hagiwara...no particular reason though, other than his age advantage over everybody else listed.
Kashunowaka Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 I voted for Hagiwara...no particular reason though, other than his age advantage over everybody else listed. No you didn't. He has no votes. (Shaking head...)

(Shaking head...) D'oh, got distracted by another thread before I clicked on Vote. Done now. (Laughing...)
hoshidango Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 I voted for Kotooshu but like Kokkai, I feel they need something more than just pushing out eventually. Like Sadogatake says, I would think he should learn to throw with is long arms as well as Tsuri like "Myobudani"--I don't know this sumo, before my time - he is perhaps almost in his 80s now but he was apparently Tsuiri and he did look like Kotooshu. I am also wondering how come Kokkai gets stuck after good records of first 8 bouts for last two bashos...
Jesinofuji Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) I went with Asasekiryu, though I almost choose Hagiwara. Sekiryu is on the verge of sanyaku and now looks like he could someday make a real run at Ozeki or even more. He also has the benefit of never having to face shoryu in regular matches. I could see many of the others particularly Hagiwara doing as well, but since Sekiryu is already almost there, he is a safe choice. Great poll, could the choices represent the future of the makuuchi division? edit: I didn't see the name Tokitenku up there. That Nimaigeri throwing youngster at least belongs in the pack. Edited April 29, 2004 by Jesinofuji
Gusoyama Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 I actually did include Tokitenku in the poll when I was generating it, but counted him out because of his "advanced" age of 24, and relatively low rank in Juryo.
Gusoyama Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 I am also wondering how come Kokkai gets stuck after good records of first 8 bouts for last two bashos... Someone mentioned it in another thread, I'm sorry I forget who. Kokkai apparently did the same thing in Juryo, he stalled out for a while, and then busted out with a 14-1 record. The person who posted attributed this to Kokkai's "learning" about his new foes, especially the guys that "throw junk", and are full of tricks that aren't that hard to beat, once you get used to them.(I thought that analogy was great by the way)
Guest MGLSekitori Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Combination speed and power. My vote goes to Hakuho.
Mark Buckton Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Go Ryutei! This name has totally passed me by. Sorry to ask but who is Ryutei? (Applauding...) Cheers for any response
Zentoryu Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) Go Ryutei! This name has totally passed me by. Sorry to ask but who is Ryutei? (Applauding...) Cheers for any response I believe he is the new Chinese rikishi ranked at Jk22w. Though I was unaware he was considered a big prospect. Edited April 29, 2004 by Zentoryu
Kintamayama Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 This name has totally passed me by. Sorry to ask but who is Ryutei? (Applauding...) Cheers for any response I believe he is the new Chinese rikishi ranked at Jk22w. Though I was unaware he was considered a big prospect. He is just plain BIG. He's the guy I mentioned a while back with mammoth proportions- 1.83 meters/192 kilos, and will be 18 in a month or so..
Takanobaka Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Wemt with Kotooshu as well....if there are multiple future Yokozuna in this crop, I doubt he'll make it there first, but his build will allow him to be very very good in his 30's (barring injury, which is more likely). I think he'll peak out in high Makuuchi for a couple years, then once his build expands naturally, watch out! Definately some good options in this poll. Of my top 4 choices, three already have the most votes, but I'm a little surprised that Kazafuzan doesn't have any votes yet. I suspect that he'll be in Juryo by the middle of next year as well...
Takanobaka Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Hmmmmm..... From September.... My, how things change....

Yoavoshimaru Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 I chose Ryutei as the biggest propspect physically (only).
sekihiryu Posted May 1, 2004 Posted May 1, 2004 guess I am the only one to rate Minaminoshima, but this was a hard poll to choose, there is a lot of potential in that list
Tenkashoryu Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 I was baffled for a while to vote for whom. Kotooshu .... or ... Hakuho B-) but I chose Hakuho
AOZORA Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) My prospect is 1. Kotooshu 2. Hakuho 3. Hagiwara 4. Ama 5. Ryutei Edited May 7, 2004 by Asashoryu1
