Hokutouriki has retired and will assume his Tanigawa name. Danpatsushiki -next year- 2012-May 26th, which is also my birthday, irrelevant as it may be. "I have had a head injury since about 10 years ago. This time I was told it would be better if I retired so regretfully, I am retiring. My most memorable bout was when I beat Asashouryuu in 2004. I would like to raise strong-willed rikishi!" he declared. He will be working as a coach at Hakkaku-beya.

Let's hope that former Hokutoriki is better at teaching and encouraging yotsu-zumo skills than he was at using them during hon-basho. I must admit that I nearly always rooted against Hokutoriki, whose style seemed brutal and unskilled, based on the nodo-wa, an aggressive tachi-ai, and sometimes hatakikomi. He almost always lost whenever he was forced to fight on the belt.

The man spent 53 tournaments in Makushita or lower before adding another 54 as Sekitori. You have to root for such a guy regardless of how it looks!
