An aging, ailing perennial crowd favorite defeats a yokozuna on senshuraku for the first time in many, many years after sumo suffers one of it's bigger scandals, and the country is recovering from the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters. Maybe in storybooks... :-)

Well said...

but this time-respect all the way-no way all of his nine wins were staged, and he faced them all, finding resources from somewhere.

Respect. :-)

You couldn't have put it better. Maybe the guy is just smart as a fox, or lucky, or whatever, but there must be a reason why he is an ozeki for such a long time.

Hakuho is good, but he is not invincible. And something with him was not 100% this basho. (kensho-motivation) Heck, even Aran brought him truobles.

While displaying some excellent sumo this basho (including a few bouts that weren't anywhere "in the bag"), Hak seemed to missing something. He may have been using this basho as some kind of experimental session, trying different tachi-ai, avoiding his usual left-hand grip, and he seemed impatient at times.

I mean, on auto-pilot, he could still sleep-walk through a basho. The two guys that did get the better of him beat him with timing, footwork and both had him in their sights before he had time to adjust and "go with the flow"... Kaio was a legitimate factor this basho, and HF, while not knocking them all out of the park, proved he's still one of the most dangerous people up there - if the mood suits him.

I think what I get most out of this basho is a new respect for Kaio.

With that 9-6 Kaio has now won more than a bare majority of wins against losses for three tournaments in a row - the first time he's achieved that since 2004. Here's to another yokozuna run! (Sign of approval...)

Somehow this little fact completely evaded the sports papers during the basho, but Kaio not only exceeded Takamiyama for most makuuchi appearances in May (as mentioned in some daily thread), he also moved past Chiyotaikai (515) for most wins while ranked as ozeki...now 521 and counting.

Incidentally, from the same article I found that in: If you've ever wanted to be uwatenaged by Kaio, you can now at least look the part (sort of...), as his main koenkai has installed one of those picture walls in front of his hometown's city hall. It doubles as a public victory counter, the 1044 is adjustable.

Uwatenage? That looks like a painful kotenage here. (Yusho winner...)

I wouldn't know the difference, I always cover my eyes in fear when Kaio grabs an opponent. Seriously though, the article diplomatically calls it a picture of a "strong right arm throw"...maybe his local supporters can't be let in on his dark, elbow-breaking secrets?

Toyonoshima, one of my faves, has never been the same since that kaionage!

Baruto was rubbing his elbow after his bout with Kaio this last time around. Hope there's no lasting damage.

Starting a new run ?

Since you said that he will probably win tomorrow. (Showing respect...) He does have a tough match though... (Nodding yes...)

0-3 now. I'm blaming Takanohana - a couple of days before the basho he was quoted with a prediction that Kaio would break Chiyonofuji's record straight away with back-to-back wins....

Is the manner in which Kaio suffered these three losses consistent with his worry about walking the gravel path to Ise Shrine in sandals?

Rumor has it his mattress is too lumpy...

Hmmmm... Kaio: 0-3...Big Problem...

And now 1:3.

Finally. I was beginning to think Chiyonofuji had got hold of a voodoo doll or something in a desperate effort to hold onto his record.
