Heh....saw the comics originally in the paper...then dug them up in digital format. Thought I'd post up a few from one of the comics I love.. In The Bleachers by Steve Moore. (all copyrights to him, of course ^^)

He spoofs sports...primarily the baseball,football,etc...but touches on a lot of varied sports. From what I've been able to find... he did these 5 on Sumo over the years.

itb19991010.gif .. a new Kimarite? ^^

Anyways...some's a bit offbeat..but it's funny.

Hope you enjoy ^^

(Dripping sweat...)

these were not that funny.......were they? (maybe my sense of humour is different from Steve Moore's).......... (Eek...)

interesting though to see that someone in the comics industry cares about sumo.

if you happen to find more Datchayama-san please post them as well.

Actually I think the last two are pretty funny, especially the water fountain one...

Moore's humor is definately on the offbeat side, but one might think of him as the Gary Larson (Far Side) of sports cartoonists. Kurt Snibbe (Sportoon) is another one I find pretty funny, but his stuff tends to be more issue specific and thus probably isn't funny to someone who doesn't really keep up with American sports...

I thought they were all hilarious! And I love sports spoofs - thank you for the link!

Just for a quick explanation of the top one...

The caption is "Third String Sumo". In American football, the third string quarterback is the guy who NEVER gets to play and just stands on the sideline, holding a clipboard, and hoping that both the starting quarterback and the backup quarterback both get injured.

Probably not nearly as funny if you don't know that tidbit...

Well, I laughed. :-) Thanks for linking to them, Datchayama!

And Takanobaka's comparison of Moore to Gary Larson is definitely on the money, I think....nice to find another cartoonist with that type of humour. (Laughing...)

I can't help feeling it's that good ole "fat guys with no actual use" attitude. Well, most people in this world don't follow Sumo, and that is their perception of it, but still, a bit shallow to my liking. The reference to rikishi as "Sumos" turns me off, personally, because it's SO "why bother" to me..

And you can't accuse me of being humorless.

Or can you?

I just get offended and cry myself to sleep.

I liked the water fountain one the best. A few were the "Sumo=fat guy in diaper" type of joke, but others were pretty funny. Sumigate is just a silly play on words, but its a good kind of silly. (Laughing...)

Well..I did know that his humor is a bit offbeat on a lot of things. Even in the other sports he sometimes grabs straws in trying to make a joke. (also...as i'd looked thru his archives from 96 to present...he repeats jokes occasionally as well ^^)

His "fat guy" stylizations/drawings are kind of common however between most of his wrestler, boxer, and even baseball sports. Also he doesn't do that many...so you can tell he's not that "up" on being literally informed about the sport. I knew a few would be a bit "off"-ish for some. And with an international forum like this some meanings might be lost. Anyways..those are all the Sumo ones I've found in the archive...just thought I'd share since I had known about them for a time ^^.

On the whole I thought they were good, I like the series" in the bleachers" there are some goodies to be had, my newspaper runs one every Sunday, always good for a laugh.

They are a very American kind of humour, either you like it or you dont.
