Yangnomazuma Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Looks like Miyabiyama may end up as Sekiwake for the next basho unless he falls on his face the last three days. He's looking better than he has in a long time and this 8-4 thus far has been against the top of the banzuke. Another couple of basho like this and we could see him being deliberated once again for Ozeki. I'd make a poll if I knew how, but what do you all think his chances of regaining Ozeki are?
Zuikakuyama Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 No chance. He was skinner, and had the heya advantage.
aderechelsea Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 No chance. He was skinner, and had the heya advantage. Ditto (especially on the heya advantage....)
QttP Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 He probably won't even stay in sanyaku. Ozeki? Not unless some super major change in him takes place.
Yoavoshimaru Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I must be missing something here. What are you talking about? There's practically no way Musoyama will be out of sanyaku next basho, he already has 9 wins as an ozeki, albeit a kadoban ozeki. He will likely lose to Asashoryu and probably also on the final day, so 9-6 or 10-5.
Yoavoshimaru Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Ahh, I knew I was missing something basic. Thank you everyone for allowing me to make a fool out of myself. Hopefully I've provided some entertainment heading into the weekend :-) (What does it say that I choose not to delete my original post?) :-D
Tumppi Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Miyabiyama will become a sanyaku regular but not ozeki.
Asashosakari Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 (edited) For a little bit of historical perspective: Since his demotion from Ozeki, Miyabiyama has been back to sanyaku twice. Here are the relevant results (previous kachi-koshi streak plus sanyaku basho): M08e 9-6 --> M03e 10-5 --> Ke 6-9 (March to July 2002) M09w 9-6 --> M05e 10-5 --> M01e 10-5 --> Sw 4-11 (March to September 2003) This time it's: M07w 11-4 -> M01e 8-5 right now --> sanyaku ?-? He's really good at mid-Maegashira, but he hasn't had two good basho in a row in the danger zone for years*, so I think I agree with QttP that Miyabiyama's chances to even survive in sanyaku next basho are rather low, let alone start anything resembling another Ozeki run... (* Before anyone asks, the M05e 10-5 record in May 2003 was not really in the danger zone; he only faced three sanyaku opponents and went 1-2 against them.) Edited March 26, 2004 by Asashosakari
sashimaru Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I think it all depends on his health status and his will. With a healthy body and the desire to win he can return to the rank of ozeki. But I think he has right now none of it.
Jesinofuji Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 Anything is possible if Miyabiyama can improve the quality if his sumo, he's still well young enough to give his career a second wind. But, unless he does significantly improve his sumo, I do not think he will ever even become a serious candidate for Ozeki. While its not impossible, its a long shot.
Yangnomazuma Posted March 26, 2004 Author Posted March 26, 2004 Just for the record, although I'm a Miyabiyama fan, I too don't believe he has the form to make a serious run at Ozeki. He could use to lose a few kg to make him even a LITTLE bit more mobile and could hit the strength training to build the power necessary to do his kind of sumo and not have be a blob. As it is now, smaller rikishi who survive the opening can make him look silly running circles around him. It will be interesting to see how he does in May.
Kintaro Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I'd make a poll if I knew how, but what do you all think his chances of regaining Ozeki are? In a word... none
Yubiquitoyama Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I'd make a poll if I knew how, but what do you all think his chances of regaining Ozeki are? In a word... none Yeah, that sounds about right (Sigh...) Welcome to the forum, Kintaro! (In a state of confusion...)
Jesinofuji Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I remember the words 'fetid bloated carcas'...
Naganoyama Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 To what rank do you think Asasekiryu could be promoted after his performance this basho?
Asashosakari Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 (edited) To what rank do you think Asasekiryu could be promoted after his performance this basho? Well, he's got it in his own hands to open up the second Sekiwake slot tomorrow, so if he does, I wouldn't even be surprised to see him become Sekiwake West. Most likely Komusubi though, I guess, since he's very low at M12. Unless the banzuke makers are in a foul mood and only put him in a high Maegashira slot... Edited March 27, 2004 by Asashosakari
Takamueda Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 The winner of Wakanosato-Asasekiryu will get Sekiwake, the loser becomes Komusubi. I bet on Asasekiryu as the winner. Wakanosato fears him.
