Doitsuyama Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Lead makushita Masuraumi moved ahead to 3-1 with a win over juryo Kirinowaka and needs only one more win for a quick juryo return. Czech Takanoyama had an hikkake win against Jumonji for his second win while Aoki is trying to avoid his second consecutive make-koshi with his first win of the basho. The seven makushita rikishi who stay undefeated today are a pretty veteranish group with Bungonishiki (25 years old next month) the youngest. Down in jonokuchi there was the showdown between two of the more promising shin-deshi, Tateno and Tatsu. Not too surprisingly the seven years older Tateno beat 15 years old middle schooler Tatsu to stay in the yusho hunt. Pippooshu Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I'm happy for Takanoyama but a little sad for Jumonji also...strange, I know. Maybe Jumonji is near to Intai's time?
Chinonofuji Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Czech Takanoyama had an hikkake win against Jumonji for his second win I readily confess that I don't really know what I'm talking about here, but with his seeming problems in gaining weight and his wide variety of techniques, does anyone ever think that Takanoyama could have much more success in aikido or judo competitions?

He doesn't want to be fat. He wants to be lean, likes the look of it. Doesn't want to look like Orora or Yamamotoyama or even Aran or Baruto. Wins perhaps but success? By what definition? I know of no paid judo competitions or aikido. He'd need to compete in some prize fighter (mixed, bad misnomer) martial arts, perhaps DREAM, UFC, something like that. They have lightweight divisions in which he might flourish. He is still young enough to go into that after sumo but I don't think his sumo is done yet. I hope he makes it to juryo.

I know he works very hard and I read he don't turn back at home from much time, b'cause he want to become a sekitori before. Gamba-re, Takanoyama! (In a state of confusion...)
Asashosakari Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Still quite early of course, but it looks like there could be a real premium on finishing KK in the makushita-joi this time as there may well be 4+ free spots for a change. I don't buy either Kaiho or Yamamotoyama as likely to stay in the division, Kanbayashi was my #1 demotion candidate anyway and fights exactly like it, and Kirinowaka has to run out of rope some time eventually. Add in Sadanofuji who already looked less good than Masuraumi last basho and currently (IMHO) again gives up some ground qualitatively to Masuraumi's eventual 7-8 performance, so finishing KK is far from a certainty. Thank goodness the schedule makers are currently forced to have a crossover bout every day. Weirdly, I find myself rooting for all four potential 7-0 promotees right now; a fluke juryo debut for any of Nakanokuni, Shironoryu* and Daitensho would be perfectly fine with me, as would the not-so-fluky debut (after all, he could still get there with 6-1 or even 5-2) for Sadanoumi. For "strange trivia" purposes a triple Sakaigawa promotion of Hochiyama, Sadanoumi and Shironoryu would be neat, I guess... * One of the first guys to catch my eye in my early lower-division scouring...it's been a while since I stopped believing in him as a future sekitori. (In a state of confusion...)

First, I hope he makes it too. I'm sure most of us do. Second, do you really think he wants to stay lean, even if it means slow or negligible advancement? Do you know this or are you supposing it's true? Have you spoken with him? I ask because he clearly has a huge will to stay in ozumo and succeed at it. Certainly he keeps banging his head against the wall in trying to make it out of makushita. But if he is as competitive as he seems, I'd be surprised that he wouldn't try to gain weight, even desperately so, to have more success and finally make the juryo jump. Perhaps he actually thinks he can stay lean AND get into (and succeed at) juryo, but I find it hard to believe, as the better he does the more the weight disparity increases (even as his foes' techniques improve as well). Or maybe he just does sumo to get the ladies...?

I think he has passed that point by now. Average weight since 2008, per SDB: Ms21-Ms30: 138.9 kg Ms11-Ms20: 143.4 kg Ms1-Ms10: 146.4 kg J8-J14: 145.7 kg J1-J7: 145.1 kg

Does that trend continue into makuuchi? And regardless, if he could continue to hone his technique, perhaps promotion -- to juryo at least -- is not as far-fetched as I had thought?
Asashosakari Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 (edited) Wow, that's really pretty interesting. Thank you. Does that trend continue into makuuchi? No. (In a state of confusion...) M6-M17: 151.2 kg Y-M5: 153.0 kg Keep in mind that makuuchi is still inhabited by a significant number of guys from an older generation (Iwaki, Miya, Kaio, Mickey, Waka, etc.) who came up when large weights were almost a pre-requisite to sustained success; that trend has reversed somewhat in the last 5-10 years and it's more reflected in the lower divisions already. And regardless, if he could continue to hone his technique, perhaps promotion -- to juryo at least -- is not as far-fetched as I had thought? IMO, the main issue with his low weight is that it gives him only a razor-thin margin for error in any bout. That's always going to be a problem when there are just 7 bouts to achieve KK, even moreso than for other rikishi. Skill-wise I think his overall package is no worse than that of any other rikishi in high makushita, save temporarily injury-demoted Shirononami and perhaps Masuraumi (who's of course also likely to evacuate back to juryo soon enough), so at this point it's mostly a matter of having a bit of luck to string together a couple of KK and do it at the right time, i.e. finishing up his run in a basho where there are many free spots in juryo. Slogging through a longer path than that (e.g. Ms6e 5-2 ->Ms2w 4-3 -> Ms1e 4-3) is always a difficult proposition if you don't clearly stand out from your peers in high makushita. Just look at Ryuho or Yoshiazuma's last couple of years. Or he could just improve even further, of course, but I'm honestly skeptical he has much room left. But then I never thought he'd get as far as he has, so who knows. Edited May 15, 2010 by Asashosakari
