Here is a not often seen picture, where the gyoji studies the exact position of the rikishi in a mizu-iri (stoppage of a match after around 4 minutes when nothing is happening, to give the guys a break). This is from today's Kotonowaka (who else..) -Takamisakari match.

Why does te gyoji study their position so exactly?

Because AFTER they return from the break, they have to assume the exact same position they were in before.

Does anyone have any stats on how often this happens? :-P

Last time I remember it happening was when Tochiazuma broke his nose vs. someone(Asashoryu, I think) a couple of years ago. And research finds the incredibly long bout in Natsu 2001 between Musoyama and Kotomitsuki, the match in Aki 94 between Kotonowaka and Musashimaru, and another double-mizuiri in 1978.

(Kewl pics! )

But what about Wakanoyama - does anyone know whether he has made any statement about retiring if, as now looks inevitable, he is demoted to Juryo?

I haven't heard anything about it, but it would surprise me a lot. His career has not really been illustrious enough, or constant enough, to warrant a retirement because of (yet another) Juryo demotion. I think it's rather safe to assume he will stay on until Makushita is inevitable (unless he has some severe injury which makes it difficult for him to continue with any expectation of keeping his level where it is right now).
