Announcing the May 2010 edition of a weirdly popular game!

All you have to do is guess Sekiwake East Kisenosato's opponents each day, before the torikumi comes out. If you guess correctly, you get a shiroboshi. This is surprisingly more fun (or frustrating) and challenging than it should be. It also gets you to think a bit more about the 'inner-workings' of sumo.

Here is the current banzuke:-

Yaochoyama (Y1E 8-7) Y1

O1 Profomisakari (O1W 8-7)

Holleshoryu (S2E 8-7) S1 Jakusotsu (S2W 7-8)

Jejima (S1E 6-9) S2 Maguroyama (S1W 6-9)

Gernobono (M1W 10-5) S3

Kotoviki (K1W 7-7-1) K1 Oshirokita (M2E 7-8)

XiaoTan (M2W 7-8) K2 Chisaiyama (M1E 6-9)

Hidariashiyama (M3E 7-8) M1 shimodahito (M4E 6-8-1)

Kameumi (M4W 5-10) M2 Kofuji (K1E 2-3-10)

Sokkenaiyama (M3W 3-7-5) M3

The rules are as follows:-

1. Guess Sekiwake East Kisenosato's opponents on each day of the basho.

2. Entries need to be in before 11:30 am Japan time on the previous day, except for the days 1 and 2 entries which need to be in before 11:30 am Japan time on the Friday prior to the start of the basho. If it turns out that the daily toriukumi is printed before these times, then any entry proved to have come afterwards is not allowed for that day (so enter early to be safe).

3. Tie-breakers to decide the Yusho.... We look at the result of the day 15 prediction, then day 14, and so on back to day 1. If still a tie, then the highest ranked on the banzuke can claim the Yusho.

4. If Kisenosato goes kyujo during the basho, we switch to S1W Aminishiki (K1E Kotoshogiku, then K1W Tochiozan kept further in reserve, if needed due to a mass spate of kyujos) for the day after his fusensho loss (I.e. we can still guess who gets the freebie).

5. Players that are leading the Yusho race (especially in the final few days of the basho), are requested / expected to get their picks in very early (before all the other players, if possible) - in order to avoid suspicions of 'tactical picking'.

Special prizes (many thanks to Yaochoyama):

1. Outstanding performance (shukun-sho) - the one who correctly picks the aite the most consecutive days. You have to have a minimum of three to win this prize.

2. Fighting spirit (kanto-sho) - the one who limits their incorrect aite picks to the shortest number of consecutive days (literally the one whose longest losing streak is the shortest). Any losing streak of 5 or more days would disqualify you from this prize.

3. Technique (gino-sho) - the one who is best at making correct picks when no one, or hardly anyone else does. A point system is used as follows and you need at least 3 points to claim this prize:

3 points if you're the only win to make the correct pick

2 points if you're one of two to make the correct pick

1 point if you're one of three to make the correct pick

New players are very, very welcome to join this wildly popular game. :-)

I'd like to request kyujo status this basho as I'll be on travel virtually the entire time and there will be too many days when I'm unsure about Internet access.

If someone can take over the calculation for the special prizes, please do so. The rules are copied below.

If I don't see anything done when I return, I'll do the calcualtions, but be warned that this won't happen until about a week after knowing our yusho result (say around May 29th).

I didn't look to see if the torikumi is up yet or not. I fell asleep in the chair at the hotel entering 21 Game...

Probably too late now but whatever.....

No new players to this game - yet (you can still join now, if you wish, without much of a disadvantage :-))

On day 1, Kisenosato will face the popular pick of M3E Kakuryu. Good start for many!

Yaochoyama (Y1E Kosho) Y1

O1 Profomisakari (O1W 1-0)

Holleshoryu (S1E 1-0) S1 Jakusotsu (S1W 1-0)

Jejima (S2E 1-0) S2 Maguroyama (S2W 1-0)

Gernobono (S3E 1-0) S3

Kotoviki (K1E 1-0) K1 Oshirokita (K1W 1-0)

XiaoTan (K2E 0-1) K2 Chisaiyama (K2W 0-1)

Hidariashiyama (M1E 1-0) M1 shimodahito (M1W 1-0)

Kameumi (M2E 0-1) M2 Kofuji (M2W 1-0)

Sokkenaiyama (M3E 0-0-1) M3

On day 2, we get an early curveball! Kisenosato will be facing O2E Kotomitsuki (as these two have the best chance IMO of securing a Yusho for a Japanese rikishi, I am rather surprised it has come so early..... Let alone Mickey being the fourth highest ranked rikishi of the banzuke - surely too early to meet the top Sekiwake? Plus with the doh-beya rikishi from Sadogatake, Mickey has fewer opponents from sanyaku to meet, so surely this match-up could have been saved for later? Or is there something going on that we don't know about. Perhaps KotoM has a big injury, and so Kise needs to face him before he goes kyujo. Any other theories? Or perhaps, the torikumi makers don't think that much.... Just noticed that Osh will face the other Sekiwake on day 2 too - are they clearing these two slates early on to face the over-achievers from lower down the banzuke for week 2? The two Koto Ozekis would normally be due to meet all eligible rikishi down to M5W Hakuba - which is like the days of Taka/Waka/nohana, Takanonami, Akinoshima, Takatoriki - which isn't the greatest bout. So by getting rid of some compulsory bouts early on, means that these two ozeki would be available to face some low-ranked rikishi with great records in the second week, which could be more interesting. Okay, enough with the theories....)

Nobody got this pick correct, which makes updating the hoshitori pretty easy. If you picked Kakuryi for day 1, you share the lead, and are invited to make an early pick for day 3.

Yaochoyama (Y1E Kosho) Y1

O1 Profomisakari (O1W 1-1)

Holleshoryu (S1E 1-1) S1 Jakusotsu (S1W 1-1)

Jejima (S2E 1-1) S2 Maguroyama (S2W 1-1)

Gernobono (S3E 1-1) S3

Kotoviki (K1E 1-1) K1 Oshirokita (K1W 1-1)

XiaoTan (K2E 0-2) K2 Chisaiyama (K2W 0-2)

Hidariashiyama (M1E 1-1) M1 shimodahito (M1W 1-1)

Kameumi (M2E 0-2) M2 Kofuji (M2W 1-1)

Sokkenaiyama (M3E 0-0-2) M3

Kisenosato's aites: 1. M3E Kakuryu, 2. O2E Kotomitsuki
