furanohana Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 (edited) The second issue of "Le Monde du Sumo", the one and only (of course...) magazine about sumo in French is now online, at the adress : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lemondedusumo/ In this issue, the sumo fans able to read French will find : - The summary of the 15 days of the hatsu basho. - The list of kimarite used, and some never seen illustrations of kimarite. - A wonderful (I can say that, I'm not the one who wrote it) article about the legendary Ozeki Raiden. - An article about foreigners in makuuchi. - An article about Kazafuzan, with exculsive pictures. - Hoshitango's danpatsu-shiki, with pictures. - And lots of news (OK, news that are not really news for people of this forum...) So, if you can read French, feel free to enjoy the magazine, and free to continue to make any suggestions and comments. BTW, all the team would really like to thank all the ones who made comments hare last time : That really helped us inprove (I hope) the magazine. And we would like to thank a lot all tha participants of this forum (and os the SML of course) : without you, this magazine would be much harder to do ! (I am not worthy...) More articles about old-time rikishi would be very welcome. Also would it be possible for you to post some of those fantastic old-time pictures on the forum?

That would be way too much work for us (we already were in an awfull hurry to finish this issue in time...). So keep in mind that this translation will be something exceptionnal. I'll post iti here when I'm done with it, which means in a few days I hope.

However, I had not intended that your team would have to do the translation. In the future, if another french speaker wants to translate an article from MDS, like Kintamayama does with japanese articles, is it ok with you if the translations are posted here?

French I studied aeons ago (along with Swedish, Russian & German) but nowadays I know French just enough to be able to tell which article is great and which is not. Basically I just looked at the pictures. :-) My father's grandmother did speak six languages fluently, I'm told. Hopefully it's hereditary. :-O

I can attest that there is a big difference since I have practically no experience in speaking English. I'm pretty sure my spoken English is VERY bad, with the huge experience difference.

Point taken. Reading, understanding, writing and speaking are indeed very different. So perhaps the relevant question should be "How many languages do you read?" :-)

In the first lesson of each class, she would get each of the students (mainly adults whose companies were paying for the lessons) to introduce themselves in English. She said that it was extremely common for a student to speak fluently for about 10 minutes about themselves, their work, their aspirations, etc and then to conclude by saying '... but unfortunately I hardly speak any English'. So, the conclusion is that you Finns, at least, are much better at this than you think :-P (Also I am quite sure, from your cultured written English that you, Doitsuyama, could speak English pretty well if you had reasonable opportunities to practise and get your confidence up. As you say, it is a matter of experience.) :-)

I could be wrong, but I don't think that throwing lightning and teleporting oneself have ever been part of the sumo rulebook. ;-) Seriously, I understand "raiden" simply means "thunder and lightning", so while both the MK character and the legendary Ozeki might have got their name from that, I sincerely doubt that there's an intended relation between the two.
