Naganoyama Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 The good news is that the new server seems to have a much higher capacity than the old and you no longer need to get on early. I seem to have a problem with the video though. I get the audio just fine, but no video. I am using Windows Media Player 9.0. (I used to have no problems in the old days with MP 6 but when I was having problems at the beginning of this basho, I assumed that they had changed something which required some later features so I upgraded, but it made no difference) Can anyone help me?

Have you tried disabling video acceleration? (Tools->Options->Performance.) That did the trick for me when I had similar problems, and I haven't changed that setting since.
Naganoyama Posted January 20, 2004 Author Posted January 20, 2004 Thanks a lot. I will try that tomorrow.
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 (edited) I've experienced excellent web feed throughout the basho. Presence of audio and lack of video might mean some kind of trouble with codecs? You've already tried reinstalling WMP9, I presume? Then again, isn't WMP9 capable of downloading the needed video codec on the fly? (Hmmm... Basically I'm just thinking aloud and someone more technically versed will soon correct my mumblings.) (Eh... Kashu had a much simpler solution already. (Applauding...) ) Edited January 20, 2004 by Kotoseiya Yuichi
Kashunowaka Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 (Eh... Kashu had a much simpler solution already. (Applauding...) ) Suggestion, not solution. :-|
Naganoyama Posted January 20, 2004 Author Posted January 20, 2004 (edited) Thanks, guys. I will try your solutions in turn as needed. If the problem is codecs, I would normally expect an error message. Kashu's solution has that ring of truth to it. (Microsoft 'enhancing' things silently usually leads to problems!) (Applauding...) Edit: I see I said solution too! Ever the optimist! Edited January 20, 2004 by Naganoyama
Tumppi Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 Yes, now whenever I try to enter the stream it connects after only one try! But I noticed the stream coming at a rate of 80kbits/sec, I thought it was 90 before??? Not that I can notice a difference but just wondering.
Yoavoshimaru Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I'm curious to hear an update, Naganoyama-zeki. Did the suggestions work?
Kashunowaka Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I'm curious to hear an update, Naganoyama-zeki. Did the suggestions work? I am curious too, but I think we will have to wait until there is actually a stream going on ... (I am not worthy...)

Doitsuyama Posted January 21, 2004 Posted January 21, 2004 Judging from a discussion on a mailing list I come to the conclusion that you might only have a dial-up connection. It seems that the streaming has been re-worked from the Kyokai as there are now three options of 80.1, 45.1 and 10 kbps (the Media Player of course automatically selects the best option at the given bandwidth). The 10 kbps version is audio only now. Before it was like 98, ?? (don't remember now) and 18 kbps. This change could be the reason if your connection isn't fast enough. Given the high percentage of dial-up connection in Japan it also sounds like this change is responsible for the much better connectivity during Makuuchi now as fewer people are inclined to use the stream if all they can get is audio only.
Naganoyama Posted January 22, 2004 Author Posted January 22, 2004 Yes. You are right. My connection is dial-up, modem-speed and actually particularly slow at that time of the day when the local telecomms network is in a maintenance mode. (I could potentially get up to 45.1 kb/s about an hour later in the day but that would be no help). The modernisation of the service is a good thing and I should be grateful, but...
Manekineko Posted January 22, 2004 Posted January 22, 2004 OTOH, when I did try to watch the streaming over the modem, I really got a slide-show of stills, so I do not consider it much of a loss - live commentary of bouts on SF chat is better than that. (Applauding...)
