Doitsuyama Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 Tochiazuma was the only losing one of the seven leading Makuuchi rikishi, thanks to a good Takamisakari. Yokozuna Asashoryu still is the only undefeated Makuuchi rikishi. Ozeki Musoyama had to pull out of the basho with a torn knee ligament. We can only hope for him that he can return in the Haru basho at full strength, otherwise his Ozeki period most likely is history after Haru. Tochinohana in Juryo is the second sekitori to pull out of the basho yesterday, cause so far unknown to me. Juzan got the fusensho and is leading with Chiyotenzan at 7-2. Nine rikishi are following very closely at 6-3. -- Doitsuyama Makuuchi yusho arasoi Zensho One loss Two losses Three losses Four losses ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- Asashoryu Chiyotaikai Tochiazuma Miyabiyama Musoyama Kotomitsuki Kaio Aminishiki Wakanosato Kakizoe Shimotori Tochisakae Dejima Buyuzan Asanowaka Takanonami Kokkai Asasekiryu Kaiho Hayateumi Day 9 Juryo J13e Hamanishiki (6-3) yorikiri J12e Hakuho (6-3) J11e Nakao (6-3) okuritaoshi J12w Tochifudo (2-7) J10w Daimanazuru (3-6) uwatedashinage J13w Oginishiki (4-5) J14e Sumanofuji (6-3) tsukidashi J10e Gokenzan (3-6) J14w Juzan (7-2) fusen J6e Tochinohana (1-8) J11w Bushuyama (6-3) oshidashi J5e Takanotsuru (4-5) J8e Kaido (5-4) yorikiri J4w Futeno (6-3) J9w Roho (6-3) hatakikomi J4e Oikari (4-5) J3w Chiyotenzan (7-2) yorikiri J5w Towanoyama (3-6) J2w Kasugao (2-7) yorikiri J9e Masutsuyoshi (2-7) J1w Kobo (6-3) okuridashi J6w Wakanoyama (6-3) J1e Toyozakura (5-4) makiotoshi J2e Otsukasa (5-4) Makuuchi M17e Hayateumi (5-4) yorikiri M16w Tamakasuga (4-5) M15w Kaiho (5-4) isamiashi J3e Harunoyama (5-4) M14w Buyuzan (7-2) kotenage M12w Wakatoba (2-7) M11w Tochisakae (6-3) oshidashi M14e Ushiomaru (4-5) M10w Kokkai (5-4) oshidashi M13w Takanowaka (3-6) M16e Asanowaka (6-3) oshitaoshi M10e Takanonami (5-4) M9w Kinkaiyama (3-6) yorikiri M15e Kitazakura (2-7) M12e Asasekiryu (5-4) yorikiri M8w Jumonji (4-5) M8e Aminishiki (6-3) okuritaoshi M9e Kotoryu (4-5) M7w Miyabiyama (6-3) oshidashi M11e Yotsukasa (2-7) M7e Shimotori (7-2) sukuinage M6e Dejima (5-4) M4w Kotomitsuki (8-1) shitatenage M6w Takekaze (1-8) M5e Kakizoe (8-1) okuritaoshi M2w Kyokushuzan (4-5) M5w Kasuganishiki (3-6) uwatenage M2e Iwakiyama (2-7) M3w Kyokutenho (3-6) yorikiri K1e Tochinonada (3-6) S1w Tamanoshima (3-6) oshidashi M1e Toki (1-5-3) M1w Hokutoriki (3-6) oshitaoshi S1e Tosanoumi (2-7) O2e Kaio (7-2) fusen O2w Musoyama (5-4) O1w Chiyotaikai (8-1) oshitaoshi K1w Wakanosato (5-4) M3e Takamisakari (3-6) tsukiotoshi O1e Tochiazuma (7-2) Y1e Asashoryu (9-0) yorikiri M4e Tokitsuumi (3-6) Day 10 Makushita Ms18w Suzukawa (3-1) Ms15w Katayama (3-1) Ms13e Fujinohana (2-2) Ms13w Oga (2-2) Ms11e Wakainami (1-3) Ms14w Furuichi (1-3) Ms9w Yakigaya (1-3) Ms8w Kotokanyu (1-3) Ms10e Tochitenko (2-2) Ms7w Toyonoshima (2-2) Juryo J13e Hamanishiki (6-3) J14e Sumanofuji (6-3) J12e Hakuho (6-3) J12w Tochifudo (2-7) J11w Bushuyama (6-3) J10w Daimanazuru (3-6) J9e Masutsuyoshi (2-7) J13w Oginishiki (4-5) J8e Kaido (5-4) J14w Juzan (7-2) J5e Takanotsuru (4-5) J11e Nakao (6-3) J4e Oikari (4-5) J10e Gokenzan (3-6) J3e Harunoyama (5-4) J4w Futeno (6-3) J9w Roho (6-3) J3w Chiyotenzan (7-2) J2e Otsukasa (5-4) J6w Wakanoyama (6-3) J5w Towanoyama (3-6) J2w Kasugao (2-7) J1e Toyozakura (5-4) J1w Kobo (6-3) Makuuchi M14e Ushiomaru (4-5) M13w Takanowaka (3-6) M17e Hayateumi (5-4) M12w Wakatoba (2-7) M11e Yotsukasa (2-7) M15w Kaiho (5-4) M16e Asanowaka (6-3) M11w Tochisakae (6-3) M15e Kitazakura (2-7) M10w Kokkai (5-4) M9e Kotoryu (4-5) M16w Tamakasuga (4-5) M7e Shimotori (7-2) M14w Buyuzan (7-2) M12e Asasekiryu (5-4) M7w Miyabiyama (6-3) M6e Dejima (5-4) M10e Takanonami (5-4) M5e Kakizoe (8-1) M8e Aminishiki (6-3) M9w Kinkaiyama (3-6) M5w Kasuganishiki (3-6) M4e Tokitsuumi (3-6) M8w Jumonji (4-5) M3e Takamisakari (3-6) M6w Takekaze (1-8) M1e Toki (1-5-3) M2e Iwakiyama (2-7) S1e Tosanoumi (2-7) K1w Wakanosato (5-4) M1w Hokutoriki (3-6) S1w Tamanoshima (3-6) O1e Tochiazuma (7-2) M3w Kyokutenho (3-6) O2e Kaio (7-2) K1e Tochinonada (3-6) M2w Kyokushuzan (4-5) O1w Chiyotaikai (8-1) Y1e Asashoryu (9-0) M4w Kotomitsuki (8-1)

Kashunowaka Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 I'd like to point out for tomorrow that Kaio has lost 5 times in a row to Tochinonada according to the nsk website. Time for Kaio to do something about that streak!
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 I'd like to point out for tomorrow that Kaio has lost 5 times in a row to Tochinonada according to the nsk website. Indeed. Utter failures from KaioU. Simply lack of tachi-ai business and letting Nada get left hand inside in full speed while he himself going for right hand outside. Nada has read well and gone all out immediately. 3 of those wins were against very injured KaioU though but in general too Nada has had KaioU's number. Tomorrow things get back to normal with a nice uwatenage or yorikiri win by U :-O
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 Tochinohana in Juryo is the second sekitori to pull out of the basho yesterday, cause so far unknown to me. Acute lumbago.
QttP Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 M15w Kaiho (5-4) isamiashi J3e Harunoyama (5-4) I wish I could see this bout again, because I went for a glass of water and missed most of the action, so in the end I barely noticed who is who and what happened. M14w Buyuzan (7-2) kotenage M12w Wakatoba (2-7) Uhm... Go, Buyuzan! Clearly a pusher, perhaps even more one-dimensional than Mr. Chubby himself, but he never gives up even when the bout isn't going according to his game plan. Tremendous fighting spirit, and eventually Wakatoba is thrust down with a powerful armlock throw. M11w Tochisakae (6-3) oshidashi M14e Ushiomaru (4-5) Good basho from Sakae so far. I've admired his fighting spirit ever since he went kyujo only to return on the same basho and still get kachi-koshi (Nagoya 02). No injuries seem to be bugging him now (hopefully to stay that way), and he can become a good mid-maegashira rikishi when he's healthy. Good win against Ushiomaru, who isn't exactly light. M10w Kokkai (5-4) oshidashi M13w Takanowaka (3-6) There goes Kokkai with his strange low pushing style again. Seems to be rather effective against Juryo and the bottom of Maegashira, while clearly not enough to beat the big guns. Suprisingly enough, no one has yet to have taken advantage of his incredibly low stance to pull him down. I wonder if he has some kind of incredible balance. Anyway, Takanowaka still looks very poor. Just a year ago he was a promising sanyaku... I hope there's still hope for him. M16e Asanowaka (6-3) oshitaoshi M10e Takanonami (5-4) Asanowaka is fun to watch! You can say whatever you want about his henkas/sidesteps/pulldowns, but who cares? I mean, everyone knows that's his style, and yet he keeps on winning with it. Maybe it's because he's actually doing something he's good at? He's fast on the dohyo, and radiates a sense of happiness all around. At his rank, that's basically what I want from a rikishi. M12e Asasekiryu (5-4) yorikiri M8w Jumonji (4-5) Asasekiryu needed that win much more, but Jumonji wasn't gonna give up easily. Nice job avoiding the sotogake which he's so prone to falling for. After Asasekiryu's twist at the edge Jumonji has lost any grip whatsoever, but still managed to resist for a while. Probably because Seki himself didn't want to come too close to prevent Jumo from getting another grip on his mawashi. M7w Miyabiyama (6-3) oshidashi M11e Yotsukasa (2-7) Power and weight won. Yotsu's pull attempt came when Miya would have pushed him back anyway. The Ball lives on! M7e Shimotori (7-2) sukuinage M6e Dejima (5-4) Well, that was a funny one! The below picture from SumoNow.Net captures it very well. In the end Dejima didn't win, but managed to make Shimotori fall outside of the dohyo rather than on top of him. Still, that can't be good to Deji's back. M4w Kotomitsuki (8-1) shitatenage M6w Takekaze (1-8) Identical to Takekaze's loss to Shimotori from day 1 (see pic), when he tries some kubinage but ends up touching down first. Well, what can I say? I wouldn't want to fall off the dohyo head first too. M5e Kakizoe (8-1) okuritaoshi M2w Kyokushuzan (4-5) Bout of the day? Bout of the basho? Bout of the year? No comment, just a lot of (Applauding...) :-| :-D :-D M5w Kasuganishiki (3-6) uwatenage M2e Iwakiyama (2-7) Very nice from Mr. Stretch! That throw looked uber-poweful. Iwakiyama can't find own sumo in the meat-grinder. S1w Tamanoshima (3-6) oshidashi M1e Toki (1-5-3) Head in Toki's chest = Toki's out of the ring M1w Hokutoriki (3-6) oshitaoshi S1e Tosanoumi (2-7) A classic all-push bout, which ended up looking rather strange. It seemed as if Tosanoumi is going to burst the Bubble, but then one sharp hand to the throat (or so it seemed), Tosa's weight shifts backwards, he loses his footing and collapses *onto his back*, in a very non-Tosanoumi like way. O2e Kaio (7-2) fusen O2w Musoyama (5-4) Kaio came out with some fast tsuppari, immediately moving Musoyama backwards. At the edge, Musoyama tried a kubinage, and while he couldn't throw Kaio down, he managed to escape. As Kaio was coming at him with some powerful tsuki, Musoyama tried the ipponzeoi, but ended up with Kaio falling on top of him and his shoulder dislocating again. Or did I miss something? O1w Chiyotaikai (8-1) oshitaoshi K1w Wakanosato (5-4) Unlike Kaio, in the previous bout, Taikai chose not to start out with slaps and thrusts, but instead tried to get on Sato's side and push him out like he did to Maru on senshuraku of Nagoya 02. Sato proved good resistance, but didn't have a grip. Taikai's head was pretty low, so Sato thought - what the heck - let's try to slap him down. Couldn't quite do it, and got driven to the edge by his opponent's mage. At the edge, I was screaming "Finish Him!", and eventually Wakanosato was finished, with Chiyotaikai taking a pretty nice dive. Fatality - Tochiazuma. M3e Takamisakari (3-6) tsukiotoshi O1e Tochiazuma (7-2) The centripetal force is F = mv^2/R, where m is the mass of Tochiazuma, R is the length of his arm, and v is the speed at which he was spinning around Sakari and out of the ring. Y1e Asashoryu (9-0) yorikiri M4e Tokitsuumi (3-6) Shoryu is in the form of his life this basho. He probably remembers his occasional unexpected losses to low-ranked rikishi, so he started carefully against Tokitssumi, eventually got his grip and finished the job. He is very confident in his sumo, and rightfully so. He deserves this yusho more than anyone (so far, at least).
Naganoyama Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 M12e Asasekiryu (5-4) yorikiri M8w Jumonji (4-5) Another longish bout for Asasekiryu. (Not in the same league as his encounter with Hayateumi of course) Is he in training to take over the mantle of Mr One Minute from Kotonowaka? He doesn't have the weight to wear out his opponent by leaning on them like Koto does but he is doing a creditable job of it otherwise. (Applauding...)

And need I tell you you were right about this bout too!
